Can't Stay Logged In After Shutting Down My Computer

I don't know if I have Mountain Lion but this is the only place I can find to post a question. I have 10.6.8 on my MacBook. I got a new hard drive and now every time I shut down the computer it makes me log in again when I turn the computer back on. The only option to stay logged in is in Accounts in System Preferences. I have "Automatic" checked and my name in the box. Still, it asks for a password every time. I went to the Apple store and the guy I talked to tried it and it didn't work. He looked online and couldn't find it. How do I stay logged in. I've looked at everything on the login page and I can't find anything checked or unchecked that needs to be changed. I went to "Security" in System Preferences and the disable automatic login box is unchecked. I'm so frustrated. Do you know what I am doing wrong or why it won't keep me logged in?

If you are using 10.6.8, you have Snow Leopard.
Shut down the computer or put it to sleep?
I am currently in the Mountain Lion partition on my hard drive, but I boot into my Snow Leopard partition every night, so I can look tonight.
You have checked the two obvious places to check.
Without being able to see Snow Leopard now, I suggest you try some basic maintenance to see if it helps. At least that square will be filled.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Repeat until it shows no repairs were made. Clearing the log in between runs can make the process less confusing.

  • Is it possible to continue downloading OS X Lion after shutting down the computer?

I am downloading the OS X Lion app on my MacBook Pro and is only at 180mb after an hour. I am downloading this app for free because I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. Is there a way I can continue the download even after shutting down the computer? Will I be charged the next time I try to re-download the app--as in, will the code for downloading the app for free expire?
    Thank you SO much!

I downloaded OS X Lion over the period of a day or so and what you have to do is pause the download (for a snow leopard user that should be in your dock) and then shut down your machine. When you boot it back up, you should be able to resume the download by clicking the OS X Lion logo and typing in your Apple ID info and the download should resume at the same spot where it was when you left it.

  • Yesterday my track pad went haywire. My pointer was all over the place and my screen would not stay still. After shutting down and trying time capsule I still had the problem. Today it's as if nothing ever happened

What causes the trackpad and screen become jittery and hard to control. There were no sticky buttons and no visible reason for the malfunction. I tried resetting with time capsule and shutting down with no progress. Later I booted to Windows to see if it could be hardware but my pad worked okay there. WOW. Today I open Mavericks and everything is fine. Anyone might know of a cause?

    Hi Raphix43,
I am glad to hear that your issue with the MacBook Pro’s trackpad has gone away. Should it return for any reason you may want to use the steps in the following article to troubleshoot -

  • Can't find Torrents downloader after shutting down my macro

Please help me if im just missing something but this already happened twice. I installed torrent downloader, downloaded a movie then turned off my macpro so I can continue the download the next day. However, everytime I start my macpro, I can't find the torrent downloader anymore. Is is being deleted automatically my OS? I tried to search everywhere - apps, docs, downloads etc. Please help.

This is legal, it is just the torrent downloader (app) that im downloading. Actually, I just figured it out that after clicking the x.dmg (could be the exe file), I have to drag the app to the app folder. Previously I just opened it. Im learning a lot of new things in the mac environment that are totally different from the previous microsoft laptops i had

  • Firefox has taken over my computer to the extent that I can't get out of firefox back to my regular homepage and moreover I can't even log out or shut down.

When I try to log on as I have usually done I get a small window
stating that an error has occurred and when I click on what should solve the problem a larger white window appears stating
I should not close the window...although several times I have
not close the window all I get is 2 blue spinning circles.
I feel like Firefox has taken over my heretofore routine
usage of my computer and I have lost control. HELP!!!!!

That file could be set as a Launch Agent or Daemon in your ~/Library or /Library, You could try to look for it or Safeboot your computer and then empty the trash. Safebooting disables Launch Agents/Daemon and Third Party Kernal extensions. Here's the article to Safeboot OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

  • Firefox forgets usernames and passwords after shutting down the computer.

I've reset all settings, cleared cache, cookies, etc. I also removed and reinstalled Firefox but it still forgets.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
If the latter happens then you have a problem with cookies that are not kept or the file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

  • After shutting down my computer or when we have a power outage and I re-boot, the print is very faint and sketchy and highlights become a very light blue. How do I prevent this?

I may be in the wrong category. Any time I have to re-boot my computer and then bring up Firefox I find the text difficult to read. It is faint and the print is sketchy. There are no lined spaces for gmail messages, i.e., no tables - just one open page with a list of messages. All boxes, etc., are pale blue instead of black on white. I don't know how to fix this. Eventually, it fixes itself but in the meantime is very irritating.

Solved it.  Thank you very much for that!

  • Cannot restart - log out or shut down...VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
I can't restart, log out or shut down my power book g4. I have always done it through the apple display cinema to which is connected but when I hit the side button on the apple display, nothing happens the light on the bottom-right corner dims but no window pops up with the usual shut down/sleep/log out options.
Even if I try directly from the menu...nothing works except the sleep option.
I tried as well directly from the power book after having it disconnected from the display, does not work.
Disk permissions are repaired, but it did not help.
    PLEASE HELP HELP!
    Many thanks in advance.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hmm, sounds to me like a software issue. Maybe something is installed which prevents the shutdown. It could be harware (peripherals) too. Try without any connected peripheral (display, usb/firewire-devices, etc.). If that does not work try adding a new user account (you can call it "test") via System Preferences and see if the problem is the same with this user.
    Good luck!

  • Fan doesn't turn off after shut down on 15" MBP C2D

The fan on my 2-day old MBP C2D stays on even after shut down. The speed of the fan even changes. 3 hours after I shut down the fan was still spinning. I pulled the battery and pressed the power button to reset the SMC. As soon as I put the battery back in the fan immediately started spinning again. I didn't even power it on. When I do power it on the fan stops.
My Macbook Pro is actually noisier when it's off than when it's powered on. Has anyone else encountered this. Hopefully there's an easy fix, I don't want to have to leave it with the Apple Store.

  • Preferences erased after shut down

Since a couple of months, my preferences get erased after shutting down the computer. Not always, but frequently.
The Dock, the Mouse and Wallpaper are back to old preferences. Mail has to be reconnected, ITunes library and the Iphoto library have to be imported again.
All this happens without my permission for any updates.
I didnt change the name of the Home file.
Any suggestions what I should do ?
    Thanks in advance

And another thing: I cant play my MOD and VOB files. It used to work like a charm with Mpeg streamclip, the QT mpeg2 playback and QTpro. I updated QT to 7.4.1
Streamclip has no problems with older MOD files.
Now when I want to open a file, Mpegstreamclip says: _unknown filetype, cant find audio or videofiles. Open anyway ?_ So when I open it, it shows the movie, but it gets stuck after a couple of seconds.
Im not sure if this problem is related to the one I mentioned above. But now im beginning to think they are related. I talked to someone from the Apple helpdesk and he said I should be worried...

  • When I turned my Macbook on and signed in, it has been shutting down automatically and restarting itself immediately after opening the desktop. The error message said, I'd shut down my computer unexpectedly. How can I get it to stop shutting down on me?

Since downloading OS X Mavericks, my computer has been shutting down midway of starting up. Please help! The problem began after downloading the software free update. Now when I start my computer, it will starts up normal but when the desktop appears, there will be an error message that I shut down my computer because of an error and if I would like to open the applications that were open before the sudden shut down I should press continue. Then when I select continue, it will open up another communication window that my computer is restarting because of an error. Then the screen will revert to shutting down and restarting again. This has been going on now all morning. Can someone hlep me on how to resolve this issue?

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode?

What does BIOS update with EC mean? I know what a BIOS update is but what does EC mean?
They probably mean to update BIOS with proper parameters to include addiction ROM holes.
You can ask them for clarify about this, which BIOS you should update and what exact flash command line options to use.

    What should I try first?
    Try Clear Cmos 1st,
then try to Enable EUP [but it should be already enabled after clear cmos]
