Can't Stop Disk Utility on ReStart - Want my Desktop!

First, I know I have nearly filled my harddrive.  Before I could start deleting things, the computer crashed. So, that's the original problem.
I did all kinds of recovery:
SHIFT at start
Command - R at start
Command-Option R at start.
I was able to verify every single disk I could see -- and repair.  (For awhile there was something that said it could not be repaired - but now it seems to be ok.)
But now, I can't get around the Disk Utility.  Every time I shut down or restart - it goes straight to the disk utility with no option of logging in to my desktop.
Was really hoping not to have to use Time Machine - I had a Word Doc up when I crashed (that had just been saved) and the Time Machine goes back to before when that doc was created.  Also, when I checked it out - it said it would take 5 hours.  That didn't seem right.
Thoughts?

Look in System Preferences - Users & Groups - Highlight your user Account - Login Items - and then if you see Excel in the list then select it and click the - symbol in the box to remove it. Log out of your account and login to test.

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

I installed ServerAdministrationSoftware for 10.6.8 on my mac- NOW I can't use Disk Utility - get Dyld Error Message:   Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PlatformHardwareManagement.framework/Versions /A/PlatformHardwareManagement? Also, the only reason I installed this was for the Workgroup Monitor which kicks out the same error.
    Any help would be appreciated!

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

  • Network Installer: Can't run Disk Utility

    Hi, all.
Just created a net install image. SIU's log did not report anything out of the ordinary, however for some reason I can't run Disk Utility, and I need to as the automated installation options frequently don't work.
I select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and nothing happens.
I run the Terminal and try hdiutil and get
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/A/DiskImages
    Reason: image not found
    Trace/BPT Trap
Now, if we mount that image on a running Mac we can see the following
    bash$ ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138444 Mar 4 10:19 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
If we run the same command on the netbooted machine
    bash# ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
So it looks like libbz2.1.0.dylib is symlink'd to libbz2.1.0.3.dylib, except libbz2.1.0.3.dylib doesn't exist in the netbooted image. But it does exist in the image when it isn't netbooted! Yes, they are the same image!
I also have two "Help" menus, just for kicks.
Does anybody know what's going on? I guess I'll re-create the image, but it'd be nice to understand what's going on and know if it's something I can somehow avoid in the future.
On the lighter side, this is the first time in nearly a year I haven't had to manually insert the CoreVideo.framework to get the image to boot!

Ah, forget what I said about it being the same image. I didn't notice that my chroot hadn't worked when I was checking... I was checking the live system instead. Good thing, too, 'cause that was just TOO weird.
Still doesn't explain why there's a link to a non-existent file. To test I created a symlink for libbz2.1.0.3.dylib which just points at the previous version. Guess what: Disk Utility works now.
I'm re-creating the image anyway and we'll see if the problem exists on that one as well. If it does, I won't be pleased. That'll be two repeatable bugs that break the NetInstall function for me in a year. Not cool.
Anybody else getting weird output if they type hdiutil in to Terminal at the Network Installer? Or do you have a non-working Disk Utility?

Can I use Disk Utility to erase Apple TV hard drive?

I don't know, but I doubt it can be done using Disk Utility. I suggest you consult the user manual for it or see if there is a Reset option in the onscreen menues. If you don't have a manual, then you will find one at http://support.apple.com/manuals.

  • Can you use disk utility to make a backup of Time Capsule?

I have a client who would like to keep a lot of important files on his time capsule for network usage, however I would like him to back up the time capsule. Can you use disk utility to make a copy of the data on the Time Capsule?
Lastly is there a way you can remotely access the files on the time capsule? (he would like to remotely access files on the time capsule).
    thank you.
you should be able to use Back to my Mac to access the time capsule correct?

  • Computer died, Disk Utility causes restart prompt, Error 2NVD/1/4:2086

So, I think my poor PB is on it's last legs. I was using my computer in bed, when all of a sudden it shut down. I waited a minute, restarted, and after the gray loading screen with the Apple logo, a blue, mottled screen came up. Nothing happened past that. I shut the PB down, tried again, same result. I shut down, waited a couple minutes, restart, and I can get to the login screen this time, but the screen has a mottled look to it; basically faint, verticle columns of 1 millimeter wide pink bars. Very faint. Then I tried to go to Disk Utility, but when I tried to launch the app, the restart screen appeared, and I had to restart the computer. I'm running a Apple Hardware Test right now...
And it says "Video RAM error detected", error code is:
    2NVD/1/4:2086
So... does this mean the video card is pooched? And why am I getting the restart prompt when I try to launch disk utility?
    Thanks in advance.

Anyone know if Photoshop 7 will run on an Intel Mac?
If it runs under OS X, it will run under emulation mode on the Intel mac (which runs slower, due to running under emulation, than a native, universal application). If it runs under OS 9 or under the classic environment under OS X, it will not run on an Intel mac. Photoshop is coming out with a universal version, which means it will run natively on the Intel mac, I believe this Spring.

  • Getting out of disk utility when you want to restore your Mac???

I wanted to restore my Macbook Pro early 2011, so I shut down my computer then turned it on and held down option. I got to the disk utility app but now I'm having second thoughts about restoring it. I can't get out of disk utility and get back to my homescreen... Any help? It's been irritating me a lot.

If you've erased everything, then you need to reinstall OS X:
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • PG G4 struggling, can't get disk utility to start....

Any time i start itunes, or system preferences my computer just gives me the spinning beach ball for quite a time. Sometimes the app will launch, other times it won't. When i try to force quite applications, half the time it won't shut the app down..
with that said, i'm trying to get disk utility to go and see if there are any issues there, but it won't launch.
Would starting in 'safe mode' work in this task? How would a start my computer in 'safe mode'...
    anyother suggestions are appreciated

You can start in safe mode by rebooting and holding the shift key down.
There are several possibilities. As already mentioned, your hard drive could be dying. However, first I would want to know how much free disk space you have. You want 10%-15% free space available for the operating system.
Running the Apple hardware test would be a good diagnostic. Insert the original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?
To boot from the first OS X disk, hold the C key while rebooting. Then you can run Disk Utility and repair the disk and repair permissions, while you're at it.
The beach ball can occur for a number of reasons. If your hard drive checks out OK during the Apple hardware test, and you have enough free space, you might want to run OnyX, which is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html. Run the cleaning and maintenance tasks, and see if you still have issues.

  • Can't run disk utility on Time Capsule

I hope someone can help. First, my time machine stoppped backing up to my time capsule about a month ago. After some research it appeared that the thing to do was use disk utility to repair it. I got a message "Disk Utility stopped repairing "Time Machine Backups" can't unmount disk. I tried to run Verify permissions and got this message "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.apps/Contents/MacOS/ARDA gent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Huh? Can anyone help me get back on track? Sally

  • How Can I Reinstall Disk Utility?

    Hi,
I been having problems opening Disk Utility to format an USB drive since december 2009, every time I tried it freezes like 1 minute an never opened. Then I supposed it was a problem with my hard disk maybe corrupted data.
Today I tried to use the Disk Utility using Mac OS Install DVD, holding C key. After that, I put to verify my MacBook hard disk, and after that told me that I need to repair. So I've tried to repair, but Disk Utility could not do it, and it stops booting my hard drive.
I needed to use a full restore of a Time Machine backup, but now I can't open the disk utility and give me the following message:
    - You can't open the application "Disk Utility.app"; because it is not supported on this architecture.
*So how can I reinstall the Disk Utility from my Mac OS Install DVD?*
    Thanks,

Use Pacifist to extract it from your Leopard DVD.
