Can't Stroke Object after Clipping Mask? CS6

Hello:                                                                                    Level: Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64 bit  Ps: CS6
I am having trouble with a tutorial.
It says to ... Create a New Layer and place it above the "main object" layer (which has a Clipping Mask) and also apply the Clipping Mask
Then I am to Ctrl + Click the main object to Select it and then Right Click to choose Stroke from the menu.
However, when I right click the New Layer with the Clipping Mask the Stroke option is not available ~ nor is it when I click on the object itself on the
canvas.
So, I went to Edit > Stroke and tried to apply the Stroke that way but the Stroke is not visible.
I also tried going to Blending Options to apply the Stroke but it's not visible this way either.
I've tried to search the manual for an answer and the FAQ's but I cannot seem to narrow things down.
Thank you so much for your time and assitance
Here's the tutorial I am trying to follow:  http://designinstruct.com/drawing-illustration/how-to-create-an-ipad-2-from-scratch-using- photoshop/
I'm stuck down under step #1 ~ it's down a bit after where I apply the Noise

Hey Conroy,
Thank You so much ... I can't believe I forgot that "little" detail
Also, huge Thanx to R_Kelly!! You helped me out a lot as well
Conroys solution is correct ~ under the circumstances I mentioned the Stroke Must be set to INSIDE.
However, the reason I could not get the Stroke to be visible was because I had not set the FILL to a color for the shape. When you create a Shape (and are following the steps I described) the Color Must be Set to FILL.
Also, In order to get the Stroke to show up on the menu when you Right + Click - the Marquee Selection Tool Must be selected on the Tools Panel to the Left.
Hope this helps someone else.

  • Is it possible to add an inside/outside stroke to a clipping mask?

I'm pretty new to Illustrator so there's a chance this is a stupid question, but I'm pretty stumped on this. If I have a path with a stroke that is set to either inside or outside, it disappears if I draw something inside of it to convert it into a clipping mask. The stroke shows up again if I align it to center, but even this seems to have some quirks as it won't display multiple strokes.  After searching the web for a bit this is the best description/example I've been able to find for this problem: http://blog.rockymountaintraining.com/?p=2186.
Does anyone know if there's a work around to get inside/outside strokes or multiple strokes to work correctly in this scenario? If not, is there a logical reason for this or is there a bug?
    Thanks for your help!

Seems to be a long-term bug that I hadn’t noticed before.
You can of course rectify it by copying the masking path, deselecting and pasting to front.
Then you can give the path any stroke you like.

  • Can't move objects after Pasting inside?

    Using CS5.5,
I made a series of shapes like the attached one, and then I select the outer square shape and I choose to edit>paste inside the shape. I then group all of the pieces making up the shapes and I want to move it to a lower portion of my document, though when I do this the image does not come along with the shape and text.
What am I doing wrong? How should I be doing this?
    Thanks.

Remember: The Layers panel is your friend! The Paste Inside command creates a mask, which is a special type of group. To move your image independently from its mask—in other words, to reposition it within the square—go to the Layers panel and click on the Link symbol between the thumbnails to unlink the two components. Then click on the image thumbnail to select the image, go to the canvas and start moving the image around (using the Pointer tool). After that, you'll probably want to relink the image and the mask—again, using the Layers panel—so they can be moved around the canvas as a unit.
As I said, masks are just a special type of group. You can unmask an object at any time using the Modify > Ungroup command, which will restore the original components as separate, independent objects. You can then regroup those objects into a mask by selecting them and choosing Modify > Mask > Group as Mask. This is my preferred way to create a mask. It produces the same results as Paste Inside but doesn't require cutting an object beforehand; instead, you simply stack the objects, select them, and run the command, with the top object—e.g., the square—becoming the mask to the bottom object(s)—e.g., the image.
If you have other, non-masked elements involved—like your gradient block with text—and you want to move them all as a unit, you have several options. One option is include all the elements in a single layer and use the Layers panel to select all the elements in that layer—by clicking on the layer folder/name. Another option would be to simply drag-select all the elements on the canvas before moving them. And a third option would be to group all the elements by selecting them and choosing Modify > Group. This last option makes it easy to move all the elements together on the canvas but makes it more awkward to edit the elements individually (which might require ungrouping using Modify > Ungroup), so it's probably not the best for you.
Finally, since your gradient block with text appears to be contained within the square that you're using to mask the image, you could opt to include that gradient block as part of your mask group as well. To do this, you'd simply stack the image, the gradient block, the text, and then the square on top. Then select them all, and choose Modify > Mask > Group as Mask. The square would become the mask for all three of the selected objects beneath it.

  • Copy object with clipping mask from illustrator to photoshop

I want to copy objects from illustrator to use in photoshop, but the eps file that i am working in has a clipping mask and when i attempt to copy objects in that file from illustrator 6 to photoshop 6, portions (in some cases) all of the object turns black or gray.  I'm sure this is a simple noob error (hope my question is clear enough), and it's driving me nuts.  I have searched for solutions using terms "clipping mask, black, copy, move, illustrator, photoshop, etc." and can't find any discussions on this topic.  Can you please help?
Here are the print screens to show you what i get in ai and ps -
(see blue outlined oval object selected - opaque white gradient)
(when moved to ps, opaque whitish oval turns black)
I'm such a noob!  Thanks in advance for your help!

You simply lose the blending modes and transparency settings because this stuff works differently in both programs. You will have to reinstate it manually e.g. if the white highlight is created usuing Add blending mode, you will ghave to use the same in PS...

    5. Measure with the eyedropper. Result: c20 m40 y60
Additionally, if you output the file to PDF or through the RIP the results are c20 m40 y60, which indicates this is an eyedropper bug.
Is there any legit reason why this might happen (I can't think of any) before I submit a bug report?

    >Perhaps it happens because the document color space is RGB.
    Exactly right, Gernot.
I was able to replicate the 'problem' by using RGB mode. Eyedropper readings within the masked object are 19.61 / 39.61 / 59.61 / 0.39.
Differences between my readings and the OP's might be caused by different color space settings.
Or, it might be a version-dependent thing.

  • Ive been trying for hours now but illustrator wont allow me to create clipping mask

I have created the attached logo wit the pen tool. I then cut the middle bit out using the shape builder tool.
I imported this onto a new document containing an image/object i want to clip it to . I select both go to object> make clipping mask.
Both objects suddenly go blank and i can see the no fill/ no stroke icons. If this doesnt happen then ai will plain and simply say "cannot make clipping mask".
This has been bothering me for a couple days now.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You can do it in a quite different/similar way with Cliping masks, without or with the purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background.
Note: There was an error in the first suggestion in post #18: In Step 5) you should select C) (the purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background to cut from) instead of D) (the underlying texture of the dripping black parts), sorry, I just spotted it.
You may (reusing part of the first suggestion):
    1) Go back to, or start anew with, the following basic parts (starting with this stacking order):
    A) The Compound Path forming the inner dripping black part (in the A),
    B) The Compound Path forming the outer dripping black parts,
    C) The purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background to cut from,
    D) The underlying texture of the dripping black parts,
    E) The underlying texture of the inner letter parts;
    2) Select A) and B) and copy them both at the very top of the stacking order, then release both Compound Paths and delete the inner path from A) and the outer path from B), then make them into a new Compound Path consisting of the inner letter shapes (you may use Pathfinder>Minus Front or Object>Compound Path>Make);
    3) Move E) (the underlying texture of the inner letter parts) up just below the new Compound Path from 2), select both, and Object>Clipping Mask>Make, then hide;
    4) Select A) (the Compound Path forming the inner dripping black part (in the A)) and B) (the Compound Path forming the outer dripping black parts) and Object>Compound Path>Make;
    5) Select the combination from 4) and D) (the underlying texture of the dripping black parts) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make;
    6) Show 3).
    C) The purple/flamelike/smoky coloured backgroun, if you keep it, or any other background will will be visible wherever it is not covered.

  • How do I use clipping mask to cover unwanted background?

I'm practicing illustrator myself. I have a book for illustrator hoping it would show me step by step on how to use the masks to take away any unwanted background in a photo but it didn't do that. Can anyone teach me how or show me where to look for the information on how to use the clipping masks or other type of masks? I went to the adobe workshop video to look for the answer but it didn't show exactly as what i want to know. The image i'm practicing on is a family photo and i want to isolate everything to just one person in the photo so how can I do that using clipping mask? Thanks!!

oh~~~ so i still need to use pen tool to draw the shape out. I thought there's something i could use to make the shape easily. Stupid me XD
I was wondering if you could help me more...can you give me a rule of thumb like when is best to use illustrator to edit image or photoshop?
Thanks for your tip! I really appreciate it!!

  • How do I make a clipping mask in InDesign?

I know Photoshop can make use of a clipping mask to allow text or other shapes to be filled with images/pictures. How does Indesign do this?
Is there a way to add inner and outer borders to text in InDesign? Any info would help.

Have a look in the ID help text:

You can use Stroke instead of Fill or additionally.

  • PSE 5--what is a clipping mask and how does it work?

Can anyone explain what a clipping mask is, how it works, and most importantly if Photoshop Elements 5.0 has this capability?
Also, are there any tutorials out there that I can teach myself on this topic? I am trying to mimic a layout explained in digital scrapbooking magazine and this technique is used.
    Thank you!
    Heather

    Heather,
You can find one explanation at Janee's tutorials: http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/elements/elemask.htm
Since PSE does not support layer masks per se, the clipping group simulates a layer mask and hence Janee's name for it, "elemask" (cute, huh?)
    Here are 2 examples:
In this example I wanted to blur the background leaving the flower in focus:
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1euavV1sDqzrEqqqierfc5dSEH9yI01
    1. Duplicate the Background layer and apply a Gaussian blur to the new layer.
    2. Add an adjustment layer below the blur layer (any kind of adjustment layer will do), but do not make any adjustment - just click OK.\
    3. Group the blur layer with the adjustment layer. On the adjustment layer paint the subject with black
to mask out the blur, paint with white to restore the blur.
Of course you can use other tools on the adjustment layer besides the paint brush, e.g., make a selection and fill with the black or white. In some cases it might be easier to first fill the adjustment layer with black and then paint with white.
In this example (not actually a mask but still demonstrates a clipping group) I wanted to crop the picture into a leaf shape.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1ys9Z7FspSwF8HHKGLrxjGVhbTodmF0
    1. Use the leaf from the Custom Shape tool to draw out the leaf, creating a new layer.
    2. Move the leaf layer below the picture layer.
    3. Group the two layers.
Note that in order to move a layer below the Background layer you have to rename the Background layer to anything else (layer 0 in my example).

  • How to create a clip mask for a group?

I have created a hue/saturation adjust that I want to use as clip mask for a group of layers. How do I do that? I can create a single layer clip mask of hue/saturation but not a whole group of layers.

You can nest it with its adjustment layer in another group and set that group to normal (instead of pass through). But setting the second group to normal may affect any blending you have going on in the first group.

Because it was not possible to apply a gradient to a stroke in CS5. When you open the file in CS5, it is reduced to something that can be rendered in CS5.

  • Selecting objects AFTER they have a clipping mask applied.

    Hi There,
What really disturbs me about Illustrator is that after I apply a clipping mask to a set of objects, the program assumes that I would want to actually select that object if the cursor hovers above that masked object if it is outside the boundary of the clipping mask. It's like selecting the "invisible". Is there an option that will allow me to turn that function off?
The logic should be something like:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object OUTSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
do not highlight or allow user to select the clipped object
Likewise, this logic should be implemented in the interface:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object INSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
highlight the clipped object and allow them to select it.
Anybody know any work arounds? Did they address this in CS4? It's really annoying to have to lock and unlock objects all the time.
    Thanks,
    Laz

It's not a problem. In PostScript thinking it's
quite normal that a couple of graphic objects
defines one or more paths, and that a clipping path
is applied to the whole underlying path system.
If those paths or path fragments which are outside
the clipping path could not be selected, then it
would be rather difficult to handle paths which are
simultaneously inside and outside the clipping area.
Therefore it's necessary to have access to the whole
underlying graphic - not only to the path fragments
which are entirely inside the clipping area.

  • Clipping mask, object too complex, can't use bitmap either

    Hi all,
I'm in Illustrator CS4 trying to make a page that has content that I want to embed within a rounded rectangle.  Sounds easy enough.
I've been successful sticking some content into a rounded rectangle, until now.  Now I have a page that apparently is "too complex".  It has lots of transparencies and gradients and such.  Once I try to do the clipping mask thing I am told it's very complex and may not print or work right.  I go ahead anyway and it just looks blank/invisible.
Then I thought artboards might be a way to do this, but I couldn't see how you could make an artboard that is a shape other than a rectangle (I'd like a rounded rectangle).
So then I thought if export the image to a bitmap and then repaste it in, maybe I could embed the bitmap into the rounded rectangle.  Pain in the butt, but I'm looking for any solution.  But that doesn't even work because it says the top selected object must be "a path, a compound shape, a text object, or a group of those".  So a bitmap can't be used
Has anyone had more luck with this?  In CorelDraw I've always just placed objects, no matter how complex, into a "container" without any issues.  Certainly there's a way to do the same here.  This drawing isn't *that* complex.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Check your flattener settings in the prefs, specific flattening options of your object groups and also the raster effects resolution for your document. Reduccing their dpi should make working possible.
