Can't Switch Applications - Force Quit Window Empty

I'm having a strange problem that has now occurred twice. I'll be running X-Chat-Aqua chatting on IRC and go hit CMD-Tab to change applications, but instead of switching all I get is a alert sound.
I can bring the windows of other applications forward using expose, but I can't interact with them. X-Chat's menus remain on the menu bar and any typing still goes into X-Chat's input text box.
Typing cmd-option-escape brought up the Force Quit window, but there was nothing in it. The power button does not bring up the Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shut Down dialog box. Selecting Restart or Shutdown from the Apple menu doesn't do anything. I finally end up holding down the power button and force the Macbook Pro to shut down. After a reboot it seems normal again.
I have seen some other strange behavior of X-Chat since going to Snow Leopard, but could it actually cause this much trouble?
Thanks in advance,
Joe.

No, I'm not sure that X-Chat-Aqua is fully compatible. I've been trying Colloquy, but just don't like the interface. There's been no work done on X-Chat-Aqua in quite awhile. It is a universal binary, but I think the last release was done during Tiger, possibly Leopard.

  • Force Quit Window is Empty!

The other day I noticed that my iBook G4 seemed to be running rather ragged so I ran Disk Utilities from my Leopard disc which seemed to help.
But the sluggishness is back and on several occasions, I've been running a program (Safari, Finale 2005, Pages) that starts acting funny and I can't quit from within the program or using Ctrl + Click on the Dock Icon. Then I try Force Quit and then two things (may) happen:
    1. When the Force Quit window appears it's totally empty -- not even the Finder appears and/or
    2. the entire Menu Bar disappears from the desktop (I can still scroll across the Dock and Magnification works).
Is it time to run DiskWarrior or do I have a more serious problem on my hands?

You can try Disk Utility, but a Archive and Install may be the best option.

My force quit window fills the entire screen. How can I resize it? I have iOS 10.7.5.

    Click the "Green" button?
Or, Click and Drag the Lower-Right-Corner.
I've tried both on a Mac OS X 10.7.5 Lion system, and they both affected the Force Quit dialog box.

  • How to change the size of the force quit window?

When I open the force quit window, it fills my entire screen, and it is larger than the screen of the TFT monitor that I am using from time to time. How can I change its size back to original? The window is not resizable by dragging its border or clicking the green plus button in the title bar.
I don't know how the window got this size in the first place. All I know is that it happened during a crash where I closed a lot of other windows and where I accidentially clicked the green plus button of the force quit window instead of the red x.

    Try rebuilding your Finder prefs...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

    Tamara,
Did you reinstall using the full three step way (otherwise strange things may linger)?
Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Can't switch applications out of Safari

I'm having problems switching applications out of Safari 4. I often cannot use ⌘-TAB to switch out of the application. Meaning that I either have to click the icon down in the dock or hide Safari and physically click on the application window. I'm just wondering if any other users are experiencing the same problem and if anyone has found a solution. Thanks.

    HI,
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
Preference files can occasionally get corrupted and replacing. Your Mac will create a new file for you.

  • How can I avoid frequent force quits?

I frrequently have to force quit my IMac using Mountain Lion, but I had much the same problem w/ Snow Leopard and Lion. The problem occurs most often when I switch from incoming comcast mail to incoming mac. or gmail, all of which have folders in my Mail folder, but it fairly often occurs with Safari and sometimes w/ other applications. I regularly repair disk permissions and rebuild the mailboxes and have run Disk Warrior 4.4, all to no avail, and I have discused tthe problem at length several times with seemingly competent technical representative at AppleCare, but the problem always returns.  I shall be most grateful for any help U can provide.

Many thanx, markwmsn, for your fine addn'l help. I added a new user as U suggested and switched back and forth between the new user's A/C and my three e-mail accounts and also between my own accounts w/o needing a "force quite" all morning, so everything is working well now. Have not yet needed a "force quite" on Safari or Address Book either. U may well have fixed everthing, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed because of my bad past experience. Thank U, thank U. thank U!!!!!!

  • Can shut down, cant force quit

I opened an application (limewire) and later tried to shut it down. It wont. I tried to force quit, but it wont. Now, I cant shut my computer down because it says the application is preventing it.
At this point i have about 8 windows all saying "please wait while limewire shuts down"!!!
    Argghh.
Shall i just pull the plug?

I've seen numerous posts of Limewire (or is it Limeware?) causing all different kinds of trouble so I stay away from it.
I would try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Do everything in his link once a month and you'll keep your Mac running smooth.
    If that does'nt do it read the following;
This is for a Mac that won't shut down. Launch Activity Monitor (or Process Viewer if you're running a pre-Panther OSX) and see if there are any active applications besides Activity Monitor ( items with icons next to the name), select them, and click Quit Process.
If an app won't quit by clicking Quit, click Force Quit. Then try shutting down again.
If that does'nt work start killing off system-managed programs ( items without icons ) . Be sure to quit only the programs your user account is running; don't quit anything identified as "root" or "nobody" in the User column- and whatever you do, don't quit any of the following : loginwindow, Window Server, ATSServer, or SystemUIServer, which make up the foundation of Mac OS.
Quit one process at a time, and then shut down after each kill until you find success!
    I wish you luck!
    Cheers!

  • My 'Force Quit' window is blank

Since 2 days my computer hangs frequently. Everythings halts, keyboard input is impossible (you here a beep) and I can't shut it down.
When I try Force Quit the window is blank, so I don't see which app isn't responding.
Only way to shut it down is to use the Power button on the back.
I've run Disk Utilities, Disk Warrior and the Apple Hardware test and everything comes back ok now.
I've picked out a faulty DIMM and the HD I use as a TimeMachine was not ok, bot the DIMM was removed (I now have 12GB installed) and I repaired the HD and it came back ok.
Any one has any ideas as to what this might be?
Or should I install every thing all over again aka a clean install?

Start with reinstalling Snow Leopard and see if that fixes things. If so, run Software Update, install everything listed, repeat until there aren't any more, repair permissions, and restart.

  • Rogue message:  can't open, must force quit

I have one message in my in-box which will not open. Highlighting it (even by deleting mail above or below it) prompts the rainbow swirl to appear forever and I must force quit. Any ideas?

If your mail client has a "preview pane" feature like Outlook, Outlook Express, or Entourage try turning this feature off.
You should then have just a list of mail and subjects.
Select the offending item and delete.
I would immediately empty the Deleted Items and then quit and restart the mail client after that.

  • Force Quit window 'blank' and cannot use shutdown/restart in menu

    I have a Dual G5 running 10.5.8.
Over the past 2 months I will have a situation where my computer will still work in individual applications, but
    1. I cannot use apple-tab to change applications
    2. I cannot select the restart/shutdown menu
    3. option-apple-esc brings up the Force Quit menu, but its blank
I end up having to hard-restart the machine using the button on the front.
Anyone have ideas on what may be at the root of this?
I have created another user account but still get the error.
I have a new hard drive installed.
I have run /sbin/fsck/ -fy all is clean
    I have run repair permissions
    What next?

    Hi
I have seen damaged/corrupted fonts cause similar issues. If you've introduced/downloaded new fonts in the last two months perhaps it's these that's causing the problems?
Have you tried booting from the installer disk and trying for an Archive & Install and selecting the Preserve Network users and Settings option? You could try using something more industrial like DiskWarrior first?
Whilst you have the chance make sure you have any relevant backups made and handy. Yes I know it's a brand new drive etc but you never know?

  • How can I switch off the automatic window size and set the size of the window manually

I need to open the web-page in a window of a certain size. The javascript function window.resizeTo (w, h) does not work. If I open the window using the window.open ("", "", "width: w, height: h, ..."), there is another problem.
The hyperlinks that have to be opened in a new tab in the same window or at least in the window of the same size, will open in another tab of the first window from which I called window.open().
I do not know what it is, bug or as intended, but the normal full-featured window with the right size I cannot get.

You need an extension if you want to set the window dimensions to a specific value or you need to open a pop-up window with window.open and specify the width and height.<br />
Otherwise a new window opens with some default dimensions as saved in localstore.rdf and you can't easily adjust the dimensions via JavaScript in that case.
