Can't switch to line-in - Mac insists on feeding microphone input to GB3

I'm running on a Mac Book Pro and I'm trying to use something other than the built-in mic for audio input.
First I tried the line in - I know that a mic won't work (levels are different), so I got a Griffin guitar cable that is made to go into the line-in jack and plug directly into my electric guitar. I picked line-in as the input device in System Preferences -> Sound, checked that the input was coming into the computer, and went over to Garage Band to record. The problem was that Garage Band was still listening to (and recording) the built-in mic.
It gets worse. I figured I'd have other problems so I went out to get a USB input device (M-Audio Fast Track Pro - it converts audio into digital and then feeds it to the Mac on a USB cable). And I still have the same problem: the built-in mic is still active and Garage Band is not getting the signal from the Fast Track Pro.
I've checked that everything is working properly - in the Sound panel of System Preferences I can see that a signal is being received by the operating system (the "input level" lights flash in the Sound panen when I strum on the guitar).
I've got to be missing something - what is it? How do I get the input switched over from the mic to something else?

I got a Griffin guitar cable
that will not help with the levels

  • Can I switch from Win to Mac and back to Win

I just bought 2 new Shuffle for my 2 children. I hooked it up to our Dell Windows PC. I have downloaded a few songs from a CD that are also on my Mac's at work. When we go on vacation, I will be taking my Mac Book Pro. Can I get the Shuffles to work with my MBP while on vacation and then restore to windows when we get back? If you can help, I'll buy you a car. Mark

Yes, the ipods will work with either a windows based or mac based computer.
However, and ipod shuffle will loose the music if linked to another library.
One way around this is to uncheck open itunes when this ipod is connected as posted by 0Ari0. But, this only works if you just want to charge the ipod.
If you are wanting to load more music as you are on vacation, you can always transfer your library to your MacBook.
This article will help if you wish to transfer the library from the Dell to the MacBook:

This works with an ipod or any external drive.

    Hi
You appear to have a firmware password set and you seem to have forgotten it? Any one of these links might help you understand what's going on?

  • Can I switch back & forth from Mac to Windows PC on my iPhone?

Am wondering if its possible to use my iPhone with both my at home iBook and my Windows PC at work?

    masonsbeau,
As long as they both meet the system requirements the general answer is yes.
However, you will only be able to sync music and videos from one of them. However, contacts and calendars can be synced with both, or only one your choice.
Purchased music can be transfered to the other computer using the iPhone even if you don't sync music with that computer. As long as both computers are authorized on your iTunes Store account, go to File -> Transfer purchases to copy purchased songs to the computer you aren't syncing with. The same steps can be used to sync songs purchased on your iPhone to the computer as well.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • How can I switch a data plan from one line to another?

I have 5 lines on my account in a Nationwide Family Plan. I have a question about these two lines:
    A: Smartphone, 2GB Data
    B: Smartphone, 4GB Data Promo
Line A has been using about 3GB every month due to no wifi access, while Line B uses less than 1.5 GB a month as they work from home.
I can't see upping Line A's data as the next available tier is the 5GB for $50/month, and there is literally no way I would ever consider a Share Everything plan, they are just too expensive for my needs (i have unlimited on my line and use 5-9GB a month)
Is there any way I can swap the data between the two phone numbers? Or just switch the phone numbers between the two phones? I can always swap the SIM's myself (they are 4G devices).
Thank you for any input you may have!

Your suggestion is to trade phone numbers. For example your example is Mom has XXX-555-1111 and Dad has XXX-555-2222. They would have change to Mom with the 2222 number and Dad with the 1111 number. All their contacts would have to call a new number to get that person.
For the OP to keep the numbers associated with the original person (Mom-1111 & Dad-2222) it isn't possible to switch phone numbers associated with a specific line's contract and features.

If you use the organizer, you need to buy the boxed version of PSE 12. You can usually find it at big box stores and online retailers for less than adobe's upgrade price, if you shop around. You need the boxed version because you get a serial  number that works on both platforms, and you will need to install PSE 12 in windows first, upgrade your catalog, then make a full backup to a removable drive and restore from that to the mac, after installing PSE 12 there.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't matter.

  • HT202879 I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents. If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.

Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?
Any computer is compatible as long as it can read and write Office files. But for perfect (or at least near perfect) compatibility, you would want to purchase Office 2011 for Mac.
How can I transport from Windows to Mac?
You can't directly transport any installation of Windows. All PC's come with a machine specific version of Windows intended for that PC. They don't have all of the hardware drivers the retail disks cover.
If you want Windows on your Mac, you would first purchase a full version copy (NOT an upgrade disk) of Windows 7 or 8. Those are the only supported versions on newer Macs. You install it through the supplied Boot Camp utility that comes with the Mac to create a new partition for Windows, and then install the retail copy of Windows you purchased.
The reason only these versions of Windows are supported is the same basic reason as a machine specific version of Windows for a PC. Apple only includes the necessary Mac hardware drivers for Win 7 or 8 on new Macs.
Once Windows is installed, you could then install the version of Office for Windows you already own. The nuisance of a Boot Camp partition is that you have to physically boot to either Windows or OS X, so you can only use the apps of the OS you're in at the time. To use both at once, you'd have to use virtual machine software (Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox) and then install Windows within that. Then you'd be able to run Windows inside of OS X and have access to both at the same time.
