Can't Sync, iPhone Thinks it's new, wants to restore/set up.

Recently my iPhone would disconnect itself every time I tried to sync, the phone display itself would still say "in progress", however it would have disappeared from the iTunes source list, I hadn't time to rectify this problem before going out of the country.
Whilst away from home, I have installed many apps, added calendar appointments and even some new numbers, so there's plenty of stuff I don't want to lose (The photos were picked up by iPhoto no problem)... however I connect my phone to the Mac it seems to think it's new, presenting me with the "restore" or "set up" screen as seen here: http://img200.imageshack.us/i/picture2czs.png/
Obviously I don't want to restore from a previous back-up as it will contain old data, and setting the phone up as new will also attempt to resort to the old backup.
Is there any way around this? I've already tried rebooting the phone, rebooting the computer, and re-installing iTunes. Are there any other non-destructive steps I can attempt to either get things working again, or perform a back-up?

I just ran into this issue. At the restore screen, select most recent backup. Soon after you click continue a small box will appear to indicate its starting restore. This is where itunes is extracting backup. When you see this box, disconnect iphone from computer.
Itunes will finish up extraction of restore shortly, then screen will clear and iphone will be removed from devices list.
Re-connect iphone and itunes should sync normally (at least it did for me).

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

If the answer to the above question is "yes", FIRST, set up a backup of your new computer before you do anything else so the next time your computer breaks you will not be in the same situation. Backup solutions are numerous and inexpensive, and there is absolutely no excuse in the Third Millennium not to have one.

You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

If it is actually an exchange calendar, and it's not linked to a specific user, it should be possible to simply add the exchange account to each device in question and have that exchange account only sync the calendar. Then every user has access to the same calendar and can add/edit entries to the calendar as needed.
The same would apply if it were a Google calendar added via Exchange.
If the calendar is not actually on Exchange, but rather added from an outside source, it will depend on that outside source where the calendar originates.

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year. It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you. Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the Mac as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.

You have already seen that you cannot load the new iTunes into your 10.5.8, so as Neil says, you need Snow Leopard (current cost £14). And you'll probably need to update the disc you buy via the combo update, though that is free.
As far as the new iTunes is concerned, there's been a certain amount of grumbling so you may want to study the forums before you update. The main problem has been with album artwork which does not transfer easily.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such a reason. Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
