Can't sync my new ipad Air to my Leopard iMac

I just bought a new iPad Air and discovered that I can't sync to my iMac (Leopard).
I was going to upgrade to Snow Leopard but could not as I don't have enough space (2 GB).
Don't know what to do as I would like to transfer most info from my current iPad 2 to iPad Air.

I was told that if I sync my current iPad 2 to another computer,it will wipe out all my data. Is this true?
That is true. There are, however, ways to transfer sync to another computer without losing your data. Check out this user tip from TuringTest:

You cannot. Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.

About the only thing you can try is using the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion on your Mac over the top of the current install. that will reset all system files and should not touch your personal files or the apps you have installed.
Or iof you have a recent Time Machine backup use that to restore your Mac to that point in time.

Sync what sort of content ? You should be able to keep contacts and bookmarks between the two, but you can't directly copy music or films/tv shows between them - you will either need to sync those via your computer's iTunes, or if they are iTunes purchases and you are in a country where they can be redownloaded then they might show in the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your iPad

No. You can activate it directly. If you have music on the Pc you wish to transfer then you would want to sync. But you don't need to.

Your content should reside in iTunes, connect and sync. Otherwise you will need to make sure your 1st gen iPad is backed up to iCloud and then restore from this backup when setting up the new iPad.

You need mac OS 10.6.8 or greater whcih tyou can do wtih yoru MacBook Pro.

I cannot complete a sync with my ipad air to my laptop. I've tried updating itunes on both but same problem of 'waiting for changes to be applied' message coming up. My iPhone with the same software connects and syncs ok. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
