Can't sync numbers to icloud - os 10.7.5

I am pretty confused at the moment. There is no documentation that I can find about syning my Mac based Numbers documents to iCloud so I can access them on my iPhone. The manual doesn't make any reference to it and Apple's website shows a Macbook and iOS device running the same documents but I can't find instructions on how to make it work. The only thing that I have stumbled on is that you drag a file from your desktop onto a browser window with iCloud/iWork and it's supposed to upload the file. My uploads keep failing.... I'm using Chrome which just dawned on me as a potential problem??? Hmm. I'll give it a shot with Safari... BRB
OK. Still not working. I drag a file onto the iwork window and then see a message that says:
Uploading Spreadsheet
There was a problem up loading a spreadsheet.
Please try again.

Wow.. OK problem solved. I downloaded Numbers iOS but hadn't fired it up BEFORE trying to upload some documents!! When I started Numbers iOS the first time it asked if I wanted to use icloud and after choosing to enable iCloud I am now able to upload my files.
Apple should really put up a big link somewhere explaining this stuff.

Definetely not. It's as simple as maintaining a single database and use it for iCloud, Google, Yahoo or any other... like it was earlier. It's just Apple being barbaric in their strategy to restrict use of competing devices and services.

If you mean spreadsheets from within the Numbers app on your iPad to your computer's iTunes then there are instructions here. If you mean that you want to copy the Numbers app from the iPad to your computer then you can copy it to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases; but if you want to use Numbers on your Mac then you will need to buy the Mac OS X version.

Calendar and Notes sync easily with iCloud and my iPad and iMac. Just as advertised...make a change on the iPad and see it on the iMac and vica versa.
Not so with Numbers. Changes made on my iPad never make it to the iMac without manual intervention (very lame).
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Is this a known shortcomming? Where am I going wrong?

The process should be simple enough: sign in in System Preferences>iCloud with your Apple ID and enable Mail in the checklist. That should set it up.
Is this a new account or did you migrate from MobileMe? If the latter, you sign in with your @me.com email address.

iCloud does not provide a service like Dropbox where you can store any type of file. You can store certain word processing files (Work and Pages) along with spreadsheets (Excel and Numbers). Certain apps on a device also have the ability to store "their supported" files to iCloud, but again, iCloud is not like an external drive where you can store anything you like. What types of "documents" are you wanting to sync?

I have a bunch of old sermons that I bought (I can still locate them and play them on my Macbook) that are non-icloud. However, with the new ios7 for some reason I can't add those songs to an already existing folder and then sync that to my phone so I can listen to it while on the run. Really? For something as basic as Reminders (i.e. To-Do's) you are forced to use iCloud and can't sync through iTunes?

I have no intention of ever using iCloud for any kind of Sync, and it seems just odd to me that it Reminders can't be synced through iTunes where you an sync everything else (notes, etc)...
I assume I am not missing anything? Otherwise, I'm sticking with my 3rd party To-Do lists.

It is the case that you must sync your iPhone with iCloud in order to get Reminders to appear on iCal. IMHO a retrograde step.
I'll keep using Toodledo's OTA iCal subscription feature, whereby items entered on your iPhone, when synced OTA to your Toodledo account, will appear in the Reminders list in iCal (as a pulled subscribed calendar; you can't edit these items in iCal).

IPad can't sync contacts with iCloud

I need some help.... I have an iMac running Mtn Lion (10.8.2) and an iPad3 (6.0.1) and I'm trying to sync the two in iCloud. Contacts are giving me a headache. I've got the contacts into iCloud so I went to iTunes, clicked on the iPad and went to "info". Thought everything was OK but no contacts (actually there are a couple) on the IPad. Went back to iTunes and clicked on the iPad. went to "info" and now there is no box to check next to "Sync Contacts" and the message in the box says "Your contacts are being synced with you iPad over the air from iCloud" and "Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on your iPad." My contacts are syncing (iPad) with iCloud and I can't figure out to get the check box back so I can choose to sync my contacts. I know there are other threads out there with similar questions but I couldn't find anything that helped me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off I have to burnish my pride a bit by saying that I've been using Macs since 1988 and I'm a developer and UI designer and know all the geeky stuff and all the gadgets and blah blah.
Now that that's out of the way, I only got into using iTunes with another device when I got my iPad back in 2010. I never had an iPod before. I used to buy songs through iTunes, stored my ripped music from CDs (and even a few songs through P2P networks I admit) all in iTunes. I always treated the music like other data and just backed it up on drives and never really made a concerted effort to sync anything to anything. I occasionally used 3rd party s-ware like Xilisoft to manage copying files back to my hard drive. I'm also a big fan of TidyUp (www.hyperbolicsoftware.com) to remove duplicate files and all that. My backup procedure is, sorry to say, just buy another drive and keep swapping data. I'm sorry...I suck.
Then I got an iPhone early this year and started another combination of apps and media that never quite synced up with my hard drive. When iCloud came along, I updated my iPhone and learned that it took all my apps and media off b/c I never synced that up properly. I eventually got the media and apps back onto my iPhone through iCloud. I see how the syncing thing can be a really wonderful method...when done correctly, esp. w/iCloud.
But now the desktop has only the apps & music from my iPhone (i think). I'm about to update my iPad to iOS 5 and have a bunch of questions:
When it says "There are purchased items on the iPad “_____” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?" I cancel. But if I go to Purchased from the iPad and drag them to the Library, when I go back to update, it gives me the same message.
Is there a way, I guess 3rd party, to get apps from the iPad to the desktop?
I see books on my ipad, but not the same books that I purchases through Kindle or Google books, just some (not all) of the books in my iBooks.
Is there any way to designate through iTunes what songs were purchased and what were imported from previous CDs? Yeah, I can count on iCloud and my other drives to locate all the music, but it would be great to see this displayed in advance.

went to the apple store and got a little more detail. he said to first backup the iPad (right-click on it in iTunes). then 'restore' the iPad. THEN update. I downloaded the update software, so now my option is "restore & update" which i'm doing now.
I still don't get how you can look in iTunes at a device's apps in the Library view and see apps from my iPhone, but it doesn't show me the apps for the iPad. What I see there are the apps from my iPhone. I only see iPad's apps when I look at that device in iTunes>Summary. The rep had no idea why there was not the complete listing of books on iTunes as there was on the iPad.
