Can't transfer music to iPod nano

How do I download music from portable hard drive to iPod nano. I tried to retrieve my music from iTunes, but its in the portable hard drive and it only shows up thru the cloud. I want to have access all my iTunes while keeping it on portable drive.

Hey Jdog469,
It sounds like the music on your external drive is not yet imported to iTunes:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Import music and video already on your computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12493
Once your music is in iTunes, you can then sync the content to your iPod:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad

Thanks,
Matt M.

Can you transfer music from the nano to the ipod touch? how?

After connecting your Ipod Touch to the computer and its icon appears in iTunes, you can choose Transfer Purchases from iPod (Ipod Nano) from the File menu.
Or you can right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac only) your Ipod Touch in the iTunes Source list, then choose Transfer Purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
Please note that this feature only works for items that were purchased on the iTunes Store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your iPod or iPhone to the iTunes library.
    Hope that helps you out.

Can i transfer music from ipod to a new computer i do not have my old computer files as it crashed.

For purchased songs you can plug the iPod into you new computer and use the "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" feature in iTunes. For music not purchased from the iTunes store you will need a third party program to help. There are a few of them out there, and they are easy to find on Google.

  • How can I transfer music from iPod to iTunes?

All of the music on my iPod nano is in my ex-husband's iTunes on a Mac. Now have a Windows PC and want to transfer music from iPod to iTunes. Computer says 'Need to Format disk in Drive E'. Will this lose everything? Not sure what the best way is to do everything but haven't got any way of backing up my iPod at present. Thank you!

any itunes purchased music can be transferred from phone to pc via hitting the "transfer purchases" option when u right click on the phone under devices in itunes on the computer when it is plugged in. any non-itunes purchased music is stuck on the phone and cannot be transferred to the computer. u will have to load it onto the computer from the original source or from the old computer.

  • How can you transfer photos from iPod Nano to new iMac?

My friend has an ipod nano. Here's a photo, not sure what gen. it is.
He had a PC that no longer works and has no data left on it. His original iPod Photos were stored on that PC that no longer works.
He has since purchased an iMac and is running Lion OS X, all up to date.
The problem: He NO LONGER has the ORIGINAL PHOTOS, only the ones on his iPod Nano, that used to work with his PC, which no longer functions.
He would like to copy the photos stored on his iPod Nano, to his new iMac.
Using finder, he went to Device, then clicked PHOTOS and dragged the folder to his desktop. It said there was 1.43 GB of content.
However, all that was saved to the desktop was (see other photo) Photo Cache, Photo Database and Thumbs. There are no photos at all. What is he doing wrong? Thanks.

There are a number programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
TouchCopy Mac and Windows Versions (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod

  • Can't transfer podcasts to iPod nano

I've read several similar problems of being unable to transfer podcasts from iTunes to an iPod nano, but none of them seems to help. I've tried the 5 R's (reset, retry, restart, reinstall and restore) with no success. The latest versions of the iTunes and iPod software have been installed. I've tried all 3 options for transferring podcasts to the iPod (update all automatically, update selected automatically and update manually), and none of them work. The only problem I've noticed is that when I try to set it to manual update and press OK, I get an error message saying (I can't remember the exact words) that it can't be done because I don't have sufficient privileges, but I'm using the Administrator account and besides, the next time I look at Options the correct selection has been made - but the drag and drop method doesn't work in this mode. Is there anything I haven't tried? Is there something wrong with the iPod?
    Dell 4600 Windows XP

It appears as if I've solved the problem, thanks to a reply to another post (sorry I haven't got time to try and find it). It involved going to the iTunes store and downloading the free download (song) of the week. Unfortunately, it also involved giving my credit card number, which I don't like to do. Anyway, after downloading this song my iPod appeared to have all of the podcasts which were previously only in iTunes. I have no idea why this worked, because it didn't in the post I mentioned.

  • Help! Can't transfer music to iPod Mini!

    Hi there!
I had some CDs that went with my iPod mini that I do not have with me right now for installation when I wanted to set my iPod up with my computer.
So instead of using the CDs, I downloaded iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ... and I installed it on my computer. I have a Windows XP so I downloaded the one for Windows and so I installed iTunes.
I've got iTunes set up and added music to my library but now I want to transfer it to my iPod mini. I connected the iPod to the computer's USB port and something popped up saying I needed to update my version or something for my iPod...
So I did. I downloaded something called IPodSetup ... something similar to downloading the update for my iPod http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/iPodUpdaterXP/ ... this isn't the website I downloaded it from but I downloaded the update from Apple's site I think.
Upon installing that, it said that it was complete in updating... and so I reconnected my iPod and I get the "Please do not disconnect" ... and it pulls up a folder of some folders inside that for my iPod, and it doesn't stop saying "Please do not disconnect" ... I've looked in the mini-help adobe file but nothing there helped me either.
Please someone help! I'd love to transfer music again to my iPod. I've reset my iPod so far... thought that might help.

Yes. I have done that. I installed the update and then I connect the iPod to the USB port to the computer.
When I do that, at the top left of my mini, a circle rotates clockwise I think with two arrows, and it loads my iPod as a driver I think... atleast that is what I think happens. It opens a window as "my name IPO (F:)" and inside that window is three folders
    Calendar
    Notes
    Contacts

  • Can't transfer music to ipod on new computer

I just bought a new powerbook G4 and I downloaded some music from itunes. After plugging in my ipod (which shows up fine in itunes) it wont' let me transfer music to my ipod. Is there a way to transfer the music without doing the "automatic update" because it sounds like that will wipe out all the music I currently have on the ipod?

    Caitlin,
Welcome to the discussions. Have you played the purchased music in iTunes yet?

  • Can I transfer music from ipod into itunes?

I know I'm probably clutching at straws here but thought I'd give it a try and throw the question out there! Stupidly I let my system be rebooted with the original operating system discs without backing up my itunes!! Is there any chance of transferring my music back using my ipod?? Thanks in advance

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to iTunes/preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'Command + Option' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
    Try iPodDisk.
Similar programs are Expod, Yamipod, Senuti and Music Rescue.
If you want to retrieve playlists, iPodRip has the feature enabling you to reconstruct them.

  • Can't get music onto ipod nano.

Not very good with computers so any help is appreciated. Have one ipod nano connected without any problems. Have just purchased a new one for my other daughter and all the green ticks show when the cd is imported but unable to get it onto the ipod. Any ideas?

do you get any kind of message? Did you burn or buy the CD?

  • Can i transfer music from ipod back to pc after hard drive scrubbed?

i have a lot of music loaded. but our hard drive was scrubbed and the library from which this music came was erased.
i re-installed itunes, and at first looked for a way to transfer the music from the ipod back onto the computer.
couldn't figure that out. then tried loading a new cd into itunes so that it could be added to ipod. the software displayed this message:
The ipod "Kim Smith's (my wife)ipod" is linked to another itunes music library. do you want to change the link to this itunes music library & REPLACE ALL EXISTING SONGS & PLAYLISTS ON THIS IPOD WITH THOSE FROM THIS LIBRARY? (my caps.)
I assume that yes means that the 200 or so albums currently on the ipod would be erased and replaced by the one album i tried to upload.
i need a way to add new music to that which is already on the ipod, and to transfer those 200 albums on to the computer so that i can delete the christina aguilera album that my wife snuck on to the ipod.
has anyone had a similar experience?
    thx for any help here.

Do not click "yes". (Assuming Windows) Connect your iPod to your computer, and go into My Computer where it should appear as a disk. Enable hidden files if not already enabled. Open the grayed-out folder "iPod_Control" and then its subdirectory "Music". Your songs shouuld be in the "F##" folders. Just copy them to your computer. Alternatively, use a third party application like Yamipod. Once the files are on your computer, add them to your iPod library, and then you can click "yes" on that message. It should transfer all your songs to the iPod.
