Can't Transfer Songs to iPod

Whenever I plug in my iPod, all my USB devices stop working. Anyone know a solution?

are the USB drivers on the PC up to date?
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date

  • Update 10-01-2006 not working?  Can't transfer songs to iPod.

From reading the forums, it looks as though I've made the mistake of downloading the update. When I connect my iPod nano, I just get the "Do not disconnect" message for ever, but iTunes never recognizes my iPod. The most it says is that I need to install the update, which I've already done. I'm using a PC, if that helps. I've tried the R's, that doesn't seem to work. The iPod itself still works, just can't transfer songs to it. Is this something with the iPod, or the software?
I saw that a similar question was asked a while ago, with many answers including a "suggestion" to start a new thread, so here I go. Any help is of course appreciated. Thanks.

    Further update.
When plugging in iPod into computer, iPod just continues to say "Do Not Disconnect". iTunes will not recognize it at all. Further, when trying to safely disconnect, keep getting message that the device is busy, so cannot safely disconnect other than shutting down computer.
iPod is still usable, but won't hold charge more than a couple of hours. What is going on?

  • How can I transfer songs from ipod to itunes

I just found my old ipod and I want to transfer those old songs into my itunes and put it into my other idevices?
    ,Thank You

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • Can't play songs and can't transfer songs to iPod - exclamation points

I used to have a home built pc with windows xp and I recently got an iMac. I have an iPod nano and a bigger library than it can hold. I also have 3GB worth of songs I put onto iTunes a long time ago from Windows Media Player, but now they're listed as iTunes files and thats the icon they have on my mac.
    Here's the problem.
Stupid me when setting up my Mac I put my other computer in the basement (its so slow, that was the problem, completely unfixable and just so annoying to use) and didn't transfer songs when setting the Mac up initially. So I read the help file and it says to import my library by burning songs to disk with my old computer--but it doesn't have a burner, so I couldn't do that. It doesn't have an internet connection either. I might be able to rig up some slow connection but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
So I read the file that says you can use your iPod nano as a hard disk to transport everything... I did and I transferred the folders and everything. I plugged it into my mac, transferred my iTunes folder and all the songs showed up...
but with a ! next to them. When I try to click play, iTunes says it cannot find the file, and when I try to locate it, I cannot find it anywhere. When I try to transfer a song to my iPod, the iPod's name does not light up, it doesn't give me the plus and when I let up the mouse button, nothing happens.
Please don't tell me I lost hundreds of dollars of songs!
Not all of my songs are purchased from the iTunes store, but MOST of them are, and they won't work. And they've been working with my PC up to this point. is this a problem with iTunes, my iPod, or my computer?
    And what can I do?

    Confused:
Are you talking about songs purchased from the iTMS or songs you've imported from CDs?
If you are having a problem with iTunes Music Store purchases, you may need to deauthorize your computer and then reauthorize it (when connected to the Internet).

  • Can't transfer songs to iPod mini

When I try to transfer songs to my iPod it freeze and nothing get transferred, I can't eject it with Itunes or the mac OS finder... I allready tried to reset or restore it a few times... please help!!!

My partner's 8 month old mini recently lost all songs in it after it was playing fine. This morning, I tried transferring from my playlist & from CDs. Initially, it transferred OK. I disconnected, restarted my computer and none of the work done showed up on the mini. For the second time (or should I say third time), I transferred songs from itunes playlist. Again, no songs registered. I have reset the mini but have not attempted to do any other thing (for fear of making things worse). Before I proceed with any other step, can anyone advise, help, etc.? Please???!!!!

  • Can I transfer songs from Ipod back to new hard drive?

My hard drive recently completely crashed, got it replaced but couldn't recover any data. When I re-installed Itunes the library was obviously empty but I'm wondering if there is anyway I can get the songs from the Ipod back into the library without starting completely over? I tried opening the device to possibly copy and paste files but can only access the photo files. When I connect Ipod to the computer I only get the option to Erase and Sync, and I really really don't want to have to do that if there is some other way

  • How can I transfer songs from Ipod to Itunes library?

I recently lost my entire Itunes library but still had songs on my Ipod. Now when I try to rebuild my library by transferring songs FROM my Ipod TO the Itunes library, I am unable to. There are a million help subjects of how to transfer your songs from the library to the ipod but none about how to transfer them back and I can't figure it out. Please help!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Computer ruined...can I transfer songs from IPOD to new computer...

So my computer was struck by lightning...and now I have a new one but cant seem to transfer the songs on my ipod to the new computer with new Itunes...is there anyway to do this? I didn't have my songs backed up (bad me)...do I want to transfer my purchased songs? can I get my IPod songs back on my computer?
    Please help!!

Yes you can stop iTunes from auto opening. With your iPod connected go to the "Main" menu of the iPod on iTunes.
Remove the check mark in the first box shown.

  • My hard drive crashed - can I transfer songs from iPod back into iTunes?

My computer's hardrive crashed and I had to replace the entire hardrive. (Grrrrrr!) I lost the folder that contained all of my music. I re-downloaded iTunes onto my computer with the new hard drive but now my library is empty. All my songs are still in my iPod...
Is it possible to do a "reverse" transfer. In other words, put the songs from my iPod back into my iTunes. If so - HOW?
I'm afraid to hook up my iPod to my computer because I don't want the automatic upgrade to start and then my iPod will be empty too.
    Please send help!

As iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you connect you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are quite cheap these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • How can I transfer songs from iPod on to new iTunes account?

My old laptop shut down, forcing me to buy a new macbook. I do not want to have to copy all my CDs and whatnot to my new laptop again. Without having to transfer the mp3 files on my hard drive to my new mac, is there any way I can sign into my old account (even if the iTunes library is empty) and transfer my IPod library to the new iTunes?
