Can't turn file vault off

file vault won't turn off
says it doesn't have enough memory
anyone know how i can turn it off
w/o deleting files?
i have 80 GB HD w/ 20 GB available
and 100 GB backup external HD which I backup my HD with using SuperDuper.

The message is as follows...
There isn't enough space on your hard drive to turn off File Vault
Turning off FileVault requires an additional 4073.8 GB of free disk space to create an unencrypted copy of the home folder. Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
(I assume it doesn't really mean 4073.8G - from reading another post this seems to be the number it chooses when it can't figure out how much space it needs)

  • I forgot to turn file vault off,  Recovery HD is locked

I recently erased Macintosh HD to reinstall ML, however, when I tried to install ML, it says the recovery HD is locked. I member encrypting the HD using Filevault. I still have the recovery keys but I erased the macintosh HD without turning file vault off
can I unlock the recovery HD using file vault recovery keys or should I kiss the macintosh HD goodbye??

    Try this
So while in Recovery Mode, open Terminal , locate the logical UUID (example: 111111-2222-3333-444444444444 ) of the disk to unlock.
"diskutil coreStorage list" will give you the UUID. After that you can unlock the drive with:
    "diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <YOUR_UUID>"
You will be asked for the Filevault password and yes, this prompt will accept your passwd if you type it right, at least you can test and see what you type in terminal while not in the password prompt.

  • Can't enable File Vault

Decided to try out Leopard on an external USB drive before overwriting Tiger.
Clean installation on an external USB drive(Intel Macbook) boots fine.
File Vault tells me I cannot enable as the Home Folder is not Mac OS Extended Journalled when it is - it's actually Journalled case-sensitive - should that matter?
Also tried installing a demo of Adobe Dreamweaver and that gives me an error of incompatible volume format.
Is this a known bug with external USB boots?
Another thing I can;t do is partition it to try out BootCamp.
    Any ideas?

I think the problem with a case-sensitive file system is that not all software vendors make Unix compatible products. If you have two files with the same name save the case, abc.txt and Abc.txt, some programs may crash because they "see" two "identical" files.
Until all the world agrees on case-sensitive names, then I would not recommend using such a file system. And as long as we have Winders, that won't happen.
In fact, I suspect some of the problems may well be from MS Office products running on BSD, but that's only a surmise. Then there is the networking problem when "talking" to a file system that is not case-sensitive.
I have read enough pro and con to consider that the world is not yet ready for case-sensitive file systems, especially on computers with dual-boot capability and that can run BSD and GUI apps at the same time.
Yes, FV and TM do not really conflict. It's the way FV encrypts your folders. It makes each folder look like a single large file, so TM cannot do anything with it but save it as a unit. If TM could look into the folder that would mean the encryption is useless, right?
Of course, you can exclude that folder from TM and back it up separately on your own.
The alternative would be for FV to encrypt each and every file separately, but that would probably slow down the processing more than doing in in one big chunk.
Also when using FV, TM only backs up after you log out, for obvious reasons (in retrospect), so nothing happens until you do log out, and then you can't turn the box off until TM does its thing.

  • Unix command for turning file sharing off

Is there a Unix command I can use to turn off file sharing on Leopard ( as well as Tiger ) laptops? I don't mean a command to kill it for the session, I need it off even if the system is restarted. Yes, I can do it though the Preferences, but I need to do it to over 200 some laptops. We have ARD and if we had a Unix command to send to turn file sharing off that would be helpful. Thank you.

There is a CLI for just about everything. From the [OS X Leopard Security Configuration Guide|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/LeopardSecurity_Config20080530.pdf]:
    To disable FTP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
    To disable SMB.
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server EnabledServices
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    To disable AFP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist

  • Can't disable File Vault

I wanted to disable the File Vault for my account. The password is correct. But after a while there is an error message that it can't be disabled and it stays enabled. This is after I had installed Leopard.

    That's your only choice.
Copy enough stuff to an external HD so there will be room.  After deleting the copied from your home folder, you may need to log on and off more than once to reclaim all the space.
After you migrate, copy back from the external HD.
(If you don't have an external HD, get one -- you should have one anyway so you can make regular backups.)

my ipad won"t turn off. there is a small window with an email text in it and it appears frozen on the screen. How can i turn the ipad off?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

I am creating a map in Indesign CS4 and I want to have different layers that can be turned on and off.  Layers like different places and names that can be controled in Acrobat (and Reader).  Im not sure how to go about this and if this is something created through Acrobat or through InDesign.  I didnt see anything in ID when converting to a PDF that would save layers in that way so I assume its done in Acrobat Pro?  Just need and idea of where to start

  • Can't turn my iPod OFF!

For the last week or so my iPod won't turn off, which is a bit of a twist on the regular "I can't turn my iPod on" posts.
Until now it would turn itself off after about five minutes unused, or I could turn it off by holding down play/pause, but now it just stays on 24/7 whether it's playing or not.
This is a bit of a pain as I need to make sure it's plugged in overnight or the battery gets run down.
    Any ideas?
Oh, and yes I have checked the "hold" switch isn't on.

I just tried the enter button and play button together - that turned it off, but as soon as I let go of the buttons it comes back on again!!
On the third or fourth attempt it turned off and stayed off so maybe I'll just have to think of it as an extra game - test your skill, can you turn the iPod off in less than three goes!

  • Can not turn the passcode off on my iPhone4

Can not turn the passcode off? Please help to solve this problem, thanks!

If it's a personal iPhone rather than a corporate one. Go to settings, then general, then passcode. You will need to know your passcode and enter it, you will then be presented with the option to turn it off.

Do you have a case on the iPhone? It could be interfering with the button operation.
If that isn't it, you'll have to setup service.

Try resetting it by holding the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then releasing.  You won't lose any data by doing this.

While downloading the latest IOS update to my iPhone 4S, my phone went into a frozen state with the update 2/3's complete. It's remained like this for the past 12 hours. I can't turn the phone off, and I can't connect it to iTunes. Anyone know what to do?

If the place of purchase does not have a 'Lemon' policy (three replacements = refund or complete exchange), sadly you are out of luck.
And Apple themselves do not have any power over what policy a reseller uses. You can call Apple Care and have them replace it, but the odds are you would probably get a standard replacement again like has previously happened. I'm pretty sure Apple holds their own sort of 'Lemon' polocy where if it's been replaced three times through them they'll swap it out for a brand new phone. Not 100% sure though, best bet is too call them again.
And it ***** getting a response like that from their support personel, but hey, they can't all be that bad can they? I'm sure if you plead your case they'll try and help out. I've dealt with them in the past and had one or two people that rubbed me the wrong way, but most of them have been a great help and kept me a happy customer, haha.

  • Can you turn your broadband off ?

Can you turn your broadband off at night or say when you going out, when you turn it back do you receive the same speed,I'm sure I've had this conversation before and I think you can turn it off .Do any of you turn yours off and does it affect your speed I'm pretty sure it's fine to do just want to be sure.

turning the hub of once a day should cause no problem but multiple restarts in day will cause you connection and speed problems i would not recommend turning it on and off they are designed to run 24/7
