Can't turn off phone to reseat battery

I noticed this morning that my Pre although plugged in was not charging: although the charging icon was on, battery strength was dropping and dropping. I assumed I needed a new battery (present one is a year old), but I thought that I'd try taking out the battery and replacing it. I followed the instructions to do this, but the phone just stuck at "Turning on airplane mode" even though the battery had a 40% change. This followed an inability to send text messages and other signs that the charge was too low to power functions. So I took the battery out anyway, replaced it, reset the phone, and the battery is now charging.
Questions: 1) Should I, ideally, just have waited a day or more until the battery had drained flat? Is there another way to switch everything off? 2) What is the average life of a battery? Does this experience suggest that my battery is on the way out, or was it just a faulty connection that caused the problem?
Post relates to: Pre p100ueu (O2)

P.S. When I tried to turn on airplane mode the Pre was plugged into power, but of course had to be disconnected when I removed battery.

  • Can I turn off phone and sms function?

Sometimes I want to watch movies without interruption. Can I turn off all the phone, sms, e-mail function and turn on only video? Just like iPod touch? If yes, how to?

You can go in and activate Airplane Mode which essentially turns off the radios (3G, Edge, Wifi, etc.). No phone calls will come through obviously.
This should allow you to watch movies without any interruptions. Obviously things like alarms will still function though.

  • My screen is locked on my 4S and I can not turn off phone

My screen is locked on my 4S I PHone. I can not turn off the phone and everytime I touch the screen Siri reports the action.

Have you tried resetting your iPhone?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • Can you turn off phone calls and texts??

I am traveling to Buenos Aires from the United States for a minimester.. I called my cellular carrier and they do not have a plan to save me money in regards to phone calls and texts. I have the app What'sApp so I can use a data plan they offered me to keep in contact while I am way, however I am still afraid of racking up charges in texts and phone calls. Is there any possible way to turn off phone calls and text and strictly use the data plan they have given me?
I have the iPhone 5. Thank you.

FYI, that won't work. AirPlane disables all radio communications.
The best way to do this is to divert all calls.
    Go to Settings
    Phone
call forwarding and switch to O
Type in your carriers default voicemail number. Because it is the default number for voicemail is an exception in their list you won't be charged for the diversion.
remember to switch this off when you get back.
Then go to messages turn off send as SMS and MMS.
That should avoid most of the charges. Its inevitable that you'll get some but hopefully if you're careful it will be minimal.
Have you thought of using a local sim while you're there, you're iMessage will still work and your home SIM and account will be inactive so you won't get any unforseen chardges?
    Good luck

Either your battery is failing or your battery gauge needs to be recalibrated. Start by recalibrating:
When it shuts off charge for just a minute or two, then restart (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). Deliberately run the battery down until the phone shuts off at 1%. If it shuts off above 1% repeat the above until you get to 1%. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger without using the phone. This process will recalibrate the battery gauge.
To prevent this from happening again about once a month run the battery all the way down to 1%, then continue until the phone shuts off. Apple recommends this in their battery help article, but they don't say why you should do it. The have some hokum about "keeping the electrons moving." Honestly! The iPad battery tip gives the correct reason.
If this does not resolve the problem you most likely need a new battery. If you are near an Apple store take the phone in and they can test the battery for you.

An alternate method is Accessibility Settings when connected to iTunes. You should be able to turn it off there. I would also check out some of the answers listed to the right of this post and see if they can help.

  • My elderly mother hss EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing and not accidentally open any other app and screw something

My elderly mother has EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing or Siri and not accidentally open any other app and screw something up.

I'm asking, in all seriousness, why do you think your mother needs an iPhone? Honestly, if your mother is, as you described her, a technophobe, I would recommend against getting an iPhone or any other smartphone. I've spent a fair bit of time teaching older folks to use smartphones. If they are interested in learning, it's fine. If they have the phone because their kids or grandkids thought it was a good idea but they are afraid of the phone or not interested in its features, it doesn't go well at all.
Many basic phones have voice dialing. Obviously, it doesn't do all the things Siri does but it may be much less intimidating for your mom. Also, basic phones have hardware keys. Even someone with limited vision can learn the keyboard on such a phone. From the sound of your first post, all she will be doing is making phone calls.
    Best of luck.

How can I turn off the beep my incoming callers hear when my phone is busy?

I appreciate your concern! This feature is unable to be removed. The only way an incoming caller would not hear this particular beep is if a ringback tone is active on the line.
