Can't turn on ftp in pref's

I need some help. I want to use my imac 17" 1ghz Imac with 10.3.9 to run an ftp site. I have adsl service and a zoom x5v modem/router. The router is set for dmz and that works good. Useing safari i can access the internet. I downloaded and installed crushftp. Every post I read said to turn on "ftp access" in system prefs:sharing. My option is ghosted, and tells me to install the bsd packages. The only two I found were bsd.pkg and bsdsdk.pkg. I installed both but i still have no option. I could not find any downloads for bsd on this site.
I have updated and repaired permissions blah blah blah. I have also tried the optional install stuff on the 10.3.2 cd.
What gives and can I change it?

I'm not sure but it sounds like not all of your bsd system layer stuff got installed. Try using Pacifist to check and see that all your bsd system stuff got installed, and if it didn't, install it. HTH.

Sorry for not quite understanding. I guess you are referring to a notice in an alert. I do not have that alert active on my device, so I cannot say. I use the banner alert, so I just get a notice of a message and can swipe to open that particular message. If I ignore it, it will eventually go away.

Can't disable my FTP Access ports!

Hi. I'm running MacOS X 10.3.9 on a Mac Powerbook with all of Apple's latest Security Updates installed. I did a virgin installation and no other software programs has been installed yet, and I need to find out if my current indicated FTP settings in the built-in Firewall panel is normal or whether maybe my system has been somehow hacked or attacked by an unknown virus.
In my computer's System Preferences/Sharing/Services panel, all options are currently off, and none of the items are checked. In the System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall panel, all options are also unchecked. But even though I've unchecked all items and they're supposed to be off, my FTP Access port is still showing the description "FTP Access (20-21, 1024-65535 from 20-21). First question - this lengthy description about my ports seem strange. Does everyone else show this same description in Panther, or is it just me?
But even more strange and bizarre is when I hover my mouse over the same FTP Access description, a balloon notation will pop up with the following information . . .
. . . "Ports 20 and 21 on your computer are open for FTP. If others connect to your computer from ports 20 and 21, then ports 1024 through 65535 are open. When you turn on FTP Access in the Services pane, you also allow the service access through the firewall on the indicated ports. To stop access through the firewall you must turn off this service using the Services pane." . . .
Personally, I don't want any ports open on my computer. Therefore this notation seems strange to me, especially considering that all my ports are supposed to be "off", therefore why is this notation still indicating that ports 20 and 21 are open. Even more strange is no matter what I do and no matter what settings I change, I can't alter the configuration of ports 20 and 21 and make them show as closed. I've tried everything, but ports 20 and 21 still remain open no matter what I do, at least according to this message. Question - Is what I'm seeing normal for everyone or are other users showing something different?

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I can't turn off Apple's "News" Rule

Can anyone help me turn off Apple's Rule for setting the background color to blue for News from Apple. According to Help, deselecting the checkbox in Mail > Prefs > Rules should turn it off but it doesn't.
Unrelated but it would be helpful to me to know: in Entourage, I am used to having an option for deleting a message from the server, but keeping the message locally. Does Mail have this option anywhere?

I used the greyscal slider and changed the two Apple News messages to white. The question is, what happens when new Apple News messages come in since the Rule is still in effect. I'm not handy with Rules but couldn't I create a Rule to turn any Apple News message to this color white? Seems ridiculous but in lieu of the fact that I can't turn it off...
By now I've blown my cover as a grumpy curmudgeon so I won't hold back. Another reason I still use Entourage as my default email reader is I can't get Mail to not automatically retrieve my message as soon as I open it. I have it set Prefs>General>Check For New Mail: Manually. Yet every time I open Mail, it hurries up like an overanxious dog an gets all new mail. This screws me up because I already know I have junk mail and now have to delete it a second time. It's like Mail just does not respond to the commands I give it. (I know, I know, whining and grumbling) But seriously, how to turn off automatic News, and automatic checking for new mail?

DPX is one file per frame. While you may not be able to open it from Windows, it is only because Windwos has not been told to open them in Photoshop.
The whole point of the DPX file is to have a visually lossless storage of your frames that is designed to be used between applications (just what you want to do): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Picture_Exchange
However, if you prefer to use another option that you are more comfortable with, you can use PNG.

If you insist on a single video, use the Animation codec for Quicktime.
In any case, you need a picture format or video CODEC that can store an Alpha Channel.

Export the video with the black and use a Luma key in the next application.
Or ...
Export the video with the black, and then export a video of just the alpha channel as a blabk and white image where black is transparent when used as a track matte, and then in the next application use the video of the alpha channel as a track matte.
Since you haven't said what the other application is or why you want to use it, we are having a little trouble offering a specific solution.

Which problems did you have that you decided to reset Firefox?
Note that if you have visited pages before on a server via a secure connection then Firefox will prefer to using a secure connection (a reset imports the history).
You can set the Boolean browser.urlbar.autoFill pref to false to disable auto-fill on the location bar.

In Piano Roll, double click on note opens List editor. CAN I TURN THIS OFF?

While editing in the Piano Roll Editor, double clicking on a note opens up the List Editor.

I realize that it is my way of working that causes the editor to open up. When I work fast and with the zoom out a little to far, some times when trying to move a note it fails to move and when I try to move it again the List Editor opens up. I am very set in my ways after 20 years of non linear and 30 years of midi programming. I was just surprised that this is not a preference.
I really don't want to slow down my double click settings. I like them fast to avoid this very thing, false double clicking. Maybe I'll try making them faster.
Does anyone know where the support Feedback is located? I would love to request another pref be added.

In my new Macbook Pro, can I turn of delete warnings when I push delete. When I do, I mean it, and don't want to be asked if I really, really mean it? Any hep is appreciated.

In Finder Prefs > Advanced, uncheck "Show warning before emptying the Trash."
If it's some other warning you're talking about, please be specific.

Can not Turn On Receive Faxes

Hi There,
I have a strange faxing issue. I can not turn on receive faxes. I goto the Print and Fax center in System Prefs, click on the external Modem (Apple USB Modem) then "Receive Options". I check "Receive faxes on this computer" then the 1st and 3rd options and click "OK". If I press "Receive Options" again, the check box is uncheck. I've repaired permissions and rebooted and it still does not stay checked. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Archive and Install solved the problem. That's what Apple Care suggested.

Help turning on ftp

I've been trying to turn ftp access on for my old Titanium Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11. The PB is connected to the internet via an Apple Time Capsule connected to a cable modem.
So far, I have turned on ftp in the sharing preferences, opened port 21 on the time capsule, checked to make sure my ISP does not block port 21, opened a dyndns account, installed the dyndns update client, installed pure-ftpd, set up a user in pure-ftpd and I still can't connect to my mac using fetch. I get the following error message:
An FTP connection to "xxx.xxx.xxx" could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection.
So what am I missing?

I've had the firewall turned off the whole time, and the only port I've forwarded is port 21 on the Time Capsule.

Turn off FTP service via command line

We are running a Mt Lion server. The FTP Service quit working properly. Instead of directing users to the FTP folder specified, users are just sent to the root of the OS drive. We attemped to turn off FTP service in the Server.app, but FTP stays running even when Server.app lists it as off.
Is there a way to turn off FTP via the command line? We can't seem to find it. The instructions we found online for 10.7 don't work. We've tried rebooting the server and repairing permissions but the same problem exists.

Finally, tracked it down thanks to the good people at CrushFTP http://crushftp.com
Here is the command for anyone else that may be looking.
sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

Keychain error with .mac panel/can't turn on BTMM/etc.

I just installed 1password today and the 10.5.3 update all at once this afternoon on my desktop and laptop. Everything is cozy on my MP, but my MBP is going haywire.
When hitting .mac in the System Prefs pane, I get this error:

Runs about 8 times or so, then I can access the panel, but it has already logged me out of .mac (I can log back in, but it just logs me right back out) and I can't turn on Back to my mac.

A video has popped up on my start page and I can't turn it off or stop it from replaying.

And you need to set the "Print Products Store" in the iPhoto Preferences "Advanced" to the country you are in. The credit card you will be using with your AppleID needs to be valid in the country your AppleID is registered to. Will you be staying permanently in Australia? Maybe it wuld be simpler to create a second AppleID just for the time of your stay there.
