Can't type the apostrophe character

Here is an odd one. I cannot type an apostrophe (') in Mail! As you can see, I can type it here or anywhere else, but not in Mail! Since I can type it in other apps, it isn't my keyboard, so it must be Mail. I have tried trashing the Mail preferences file, reinstalling Mail and I have just upgraded to Leopard and the problem persists. It isn't a problem that seriously handicaps me, but it is very annoying.
Does anyone have any ideas?????????

What’s your Mail > Preferences > Composing > Check spelling setting? Set it to Never, restart Mail, and see whether that makes a difference. If it does, the problem is some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption that affects Mail’s ability to use the built-in spell checker.
The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer.

Ah, that explains why i see "European Set"....
One question, Doug: Obviously, you can select only the localization there. Is this PostScript Characters for all languages? Or is it possible to switch to something like true types, e.g. "Wingdings"? (I know, bad example, but i hope you get the point)

    Hello!
Did you boot to the Internet Recovery Partition?
    Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [alt] + [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you see a spinning globe with the text “starting Internet Recovery” You might have to connect to your Wi-Fi network before you can continue here.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Internet Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]

Did you try close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • Can't type the word "couldn't"

I recently started using pages 09 and turned on the autocorrect feature, which most of the time accurately changes mispelling to correct words. Unfortunately, as a type the word 'couldn't', when I get to "couldn" and then type the apostrophe ('), the program deletes the 'n', so what should be "couldn'" turns into "could'". If I leave a space, then go back and correct it (the way to prevent the autocorrect from working) the spell check doesn't have problem with couldn't, but the problem is that it won't let me type it. Is this a glitch in the autocorrect feature, or is there something I am missing? Thanks.

The Guide describes correctly the behavior of 10.4 (spell checker is not an application's tool but a system's one.
As far as I know, "Unlearn Spelling" which is available under 10.4.11 (in every applications), is unavailable under Leopard (in every applications).
Right-click or control-click on a bad word, and you will get the unlearn option. Example:
Type "helllo". Go to the spelling dialogue and add the word to the dictionary.
    Close the spelling dialogue.
Right-click or control click on the word "helllo" in a document, and you should see the unlearn option.

  • 2.1: Can't type the word "MacBU"

Since upgrading to 2.1, I can't type the word "MacBU" without deleting at least one letter. Every time I try, in any keyboard context, it ends up as "MacBI". No, I'm not just a poor touch-typist (pun not intended): even by sliding my finger from one of the surrounding letters, it skips over the U (and O for that matter, but I can still type "MacBO").
Other words I can't type: MazBU, MaxBU, MavBU, MamB, but MabBU, ManBU, and Ma?BU work fine where ? is any letter not mentioned above.
Anyone know what's up with this? Is it some sort of dig at Microsoft? Not funny if so.

The general issue has come up before. There are certain letter combinations which seem to be a problem. A bug, I guess.
With this one I found that I could type macBU fine in the To field of an email but I had precisely the issue reported by the OP when I tried to type it in the body of the email. The U comes out as an I and has to be corrected.

If you have a copy of it backed up, restore that. If not, back up your computer, upgrade it to Mavericks, and then get the current iPhoto version. If you don't have it backed up and don't want to upgrade, go to the Mac App Store main page, click on Support under Quick Links, contact Apple, and see what they say.

  • How can I stop the last character of my password from being displayed?

Sorry, I'm sure this would have been asked before, but I couldn't locate it..
When unlocking my iPad, how can I stop it from displaying the last character of my password to everyone in the vicinity? This has got to be the fastest way to find out someone's password (just look at the screen as they type their 'secure' password!?). Having the iPad display your password letter by letter is really not acceptable when working in a non-secure environment.
Is there a setting somewhere, or will this be addressed in a new iOS, or just ignored as a 'that's the way it is'?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

    Hi,
This may have been the way it has been on iOS since 2008 (not sure about that though), however I know (based on working in the IT industry for 20 years) that nobody on this planet can successfully argue that it would be 'acceptable security practice', for me to display 'every last letter' as I type of a secure 'root' password on my screen every day when you log in... Nobody would think it acceptable to display even their LAN/Domain password on the screen in this same manner. So why is iOS different?!
iOS on a phone (it used to be argued) doesn't need to be very secure as it is almost entirely phone numbers and email addresses that are being stored. However in recent years when the applications got better, and tablets came out, security became a much bigger issue as more and more people started using the functions of 'smart' phones to store more 'sensitive' data.
    Kind regards,
    Andy
Are you suggesting that someone looking over your shoulder can't see the keys that you're tapping with your fingers? In the interest of security, i would never, under any circumstances, enter a password when others are around.

  • How can I change the termination character (Hex 00) in LabVIEW?

I'm talking to a 3rd party device over USB where I make function calls to their DLL. I send and receive Hex commands as Strings data type. I can send without problem however when I read back a string that should be Hex "FF 00 FF", I get back "FF" because LabVIEW sees 00 as a termination character so I don't get any data past the 00.  Likewise if I'm supposed to read "00 FF", I get back nothing!   The following KB linked below explains that LabVIEW sees 00 as a termination character.  It shows where using Serial to change the termination character to something else.  I don't have this option using my 3rd party USB device.  Is there a way to change what LabVIEW sees as it's termination character?
     http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9A3589A05F21A1B186256CE9006448D4

That article is talking about two things. The first has to do with the fact that in C strings are terminated using 0x00. The second part has to do with a serial port read terminating once it sees 0x00. Based on what you described, I don't believe the second part does not apply to you since you are calling a third-party DLL, so it's doing the serial port read. Is this correct? Or, are you actually doing the serial port read yourself using VISA functions? If you are just calling their DLL, then the issue has to do with the string being passed back from the DLL to LabVIEW. You're probably passing in a string datatype. You should simply change this to a byte array so you get all the values.

  • Can I enter the 'wait' character in a phone number in Contacts?

I am accustomed to being able to enter a 'pause' character and a 'wait' character when entering phone numbers in my phone's address book.
'pause' causes the phone to pause a certain number of seconds (typically 2 or 4) before sending the characters which follow it. 'wait' causes the phone not to send the characters which follow it until you press the send button again.
On the iPhone, the 'pause' character is a comma (on my old Motorola RAZR it displayed as a 'p' in the phone number entry).
But I can't find a way to enter the 'wait' character (on my old Moto RAZR it displayed as a 'w'). Is there a way to do this?
    Bur Davis.

There is no "wait" character for the iPhone, and I miss it also.

  • Can Linux recognize the escape character?

    Hi,
It's possible that this problem doesn't belong here. But please give it a try.
I am developing an project using JSP. It includes image uploading. after image uploading, I use a javascript function popUp(url, ...) to open a new window and display this image. The very strange thing is that, sometimes the link can work, open a new window and display the image while sometimes the link can't work, or it only works for one time, then it fails. I couldn't find the reason yet. it works on IE, and not on Netscape and also not work on Linux OS while do work on Window2000. Can somebody take a look at the following link and tell me how to change it to make sure it is work on Linux OS and netscape. What's the difference between OS and windows to specify a String(that is, url of a link). The linux OS seems interperte \" to ", so it cannot recognize the full url.
    The link is :
    imageLink[i] = "<a href='showForm' onclick=\"popUp('" + request.getContextPath() + "/displayForm.jsp?filename=" + sdb.getImageFileName(i)+"&fileDesc=" +sdb.getImageDesc(i) + "', 'showForm', '600', '450', 'yes'); return false;\">"+sdb.getImageDesc(i)+"</a>";
    Thanks in advance!
    jmling

Linux will recognize the escape character. It looks like you might have other difficulties with your imageLink tag. For example, I think you need to use tags when you use Java inside your html or javascript..
    onclick=\"popUp(" + <%= request.getContextPath() %> + "/displayform.jsp?...

  • How do I do , if I can not type the word on my iPad ?

I can not type my iPad , when I type , it takes long by one word. So how do I do ?

On your iPad you have Inboxes above and Accounts below.  Open the mailbox from the Accounts section and you'll see the trash folder.  Touch Edit and then the message you want to move.  Once you've touched it you'll see the option to move it and touch Move and then you'll see the options of where you can place it, like in a folder, or Inbox, etc.
