Can't uncheck 'mute' in sound preferences

Suddendly today there's no sound coming from my computer, not in different browsers, or different forums. Went to Sound Preferences and "mute" is checked. But it won't let me uncheck.

My MBP unexpectedly developed a similar problem.
I ran Tech Tool Pro and it fixed the problem.
Try running Apple's Disk Utility and repair permissions and see if that corrects the problem.

  • Greyed our mute button, can't uncheck so no sound?!

Audio output is disabled on my macbook pro andI cannot untick the mute button as it is greyed out.
Running Mountain Lion and wishing I hadn't bothered to upgrade!

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

  • Can't uncheck mute mac OS 10.8 book pro

this has happened on the first awaking from sleep after installing 10.8
the f 10 key that mutes and unmutes sound has become stuck in the muted condition hitting it just shows the large sound level icon with the diagonal line through it but greyed out hitting the f12 key removes the large diagonal slash and shows full volume but greyed out and the small circle with diagonal slash is seen at the bottom centre of these large soundlevel control icons
the control in the menu bar is also greyed out and can not be adjusted from its bottom position.
the sound system preference shows out put volume at full but the the mute box is checked and grey and can not be unchecked.
sound was working after the install as I was playing with the improved text to speach voices...
the problem cropped up after awaking from sleep
all other functions seem to be OK
anything else I should try? ( I did a search here and found reports going back to 2006 here but they seem to centre on faulty headphone jacks and I have never used anything but the builtin speakers on this MBP)

  • Can I save my iPhone sound preferences?

When I am away from home with only my iPhone as my connection to home, I need to keep my ringer on at night but don't want to be disturbed by other phone sounds while I am sleeping. So each night I individualy turn off the sounds for emails, texts & voicemail & turn them back on each morning when I wake up. With IOS 7 it's even more cumbersome because I first have to pick the "classic" group of sounds before I can access the tri-tone & ding sounds that I like. Is there any way to store these preferences so that it's easier than doing each sound individually twice a day?

    Use Do Not Disturb.
Create A contact group for family members and exclude that group in the Do Not Disturb settings.
You can then turn on DND from the Contol Center (swipe up from the bottom of the screen), from the Settings app or simply set it to a schedule.

  • Recording Voice overs we can still hear the original sound

hi now im trying to add sound to the video and it works but the original little sounds from the camera are in there to like the wind blowing and my mom speaking and etc. etc, the music is there too but how do you get rid of the actualy sounds and make it so the music is only played during it and nothing else??
    thanks

    Hi, lizzixxx3,
As Sue pointed out, there is a checkbox at the end of the timeline that when unchecked, mutes the sound for that track. The reason there are 3 is that the first one is for the video, and the second 2 are for the 2 audio tracks. You can uncheck the one corresponding to the video track and your entire movie will be silent. Then after you add audio (music) to your iMovie, you should see the audio clip(s) in the second or third track, one of the audio tracks. If you leave those tracks checked, all you will hear when the movie plays is what you have added.
When you use the microphone, you should end up with an audio file that goes onto one of the audio tracks.
Post back if this is still confusing.
    Regards,
    Bev

  • HT5858 In the control center I can change the mute or the rotation but not both.  How do I fix this.  In settings I can not uncheck both the mute and rotation lock.

In the control center I can change the mute or the rotation but not both.  In the settings area therefore I can't uncheck the mute and rotation settings at the same time.

Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can't un mute sound

I just went through re-sizing issues, with restarts and now it's ok but the volume is muted and in System Pref Sound the mute is checked and grayed out so I can't uncheck it. Why and How do I fix this?
    thanks

Check your System Profiler. What does it show under "Available Devices?" Also, what happens if you log into another User account?

I checked audio preferences and they are set as they should be. I tried it in all the other older projects and same issue anyone have any experience like this very frustrating.  Can one download old version still ? or can you run both versions on OS10.9.5 ?

Ok, either my question was too long or nobody seems to have an answer. Sad, either way
Here's something I found out in the meantime, maybe this is interesting for somebody or maybe - problem's not totally solved - enough info for any of you to give me further advice.
When I start Logic Core Audio driver de-activated, I can open old songs. Then I save them in a new folder with all audio files and a new name. And I remove all EXS24 instruments as well as the Space Designer. I quit Logic, re-open with Core Audio activated and I can open the song.
Problem no.1: EXS24 instruments don't find the appropriate samples, but EXSMananger Pro did help me with this. Same problem with Space Designer, which doesn't find the impulse responses, connected to a certain preset.
Two questions, every idea would be great!
    - Is there any way to teach Space Designer Presets where to look for impulse respones. I can load IR samples directly and create a new preset, but I can't use my old ones.
    - Is it possible to install Logic from scratch over an existing version? Or how should I de-install everything connected with Logic and then install a fresh version from CD?
    Thank you again,
    Joern

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
You could try resetting the PRAM and see if that helps.
