Can't uninstall firefox beta release on Windows XP as you discribe

I can't uninstall Firefox 8 beta on my Windows XP as you describe. It appears "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?" Rebooting does not solve the problem. When installing a new version the same message appears. When checking for updates appears "Firefox is up to date".
Please advice. Many thanks in advance.

I found the following on that error message here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up#Computer_must_be_restarted_message_after_Firefox_upgrade
Computer must be restarted message after Firefox upgrade
If you see a message similar to Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox after a major update (e.g., from Firefox 3.6 to 8.0) and restarting the computer doesn't help: On Windows, open the Mozilla Firefox installation directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox or, on 64-bit Windows, C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox) and delete the file "firefox.exe.moz-upgrade". If you still can't start Firefox, do a clean reinstall (use another browser to download the Firefox installer from www.mozilla.org/firefox and, after first removing the Mozilla Firefox installation directory, reinstall Firefox).
The above refers to an error attempting to start Firefox but the same solution might work for errors when attempting to uninstall Firefox (delete the file firefox.exe.moz-upgrade from the folder where Firefox is installed, then run the uninstaller.) See also Uninstalling Firefox.

I have tried to uninstall it using the option from the program and features area in control panel as well as from the uninstall folder in the programs file folder. When I do the reboot the program is still their and will not remove.
I am trying to uninstall and re-install Firefox to solve another issue. I keep getting an adobe flash plug in needed when ever accessing a site using flash. I have already installed the latest version of Abode Flash and I have even re-installed it. I kept getting the same error. I do not get this error when I use Chrome or Internet Explorer.
I have also downloaded the latest copy of Firefox and installed it to see if that would correct any corruption and that didn't work either.

Thank you for the tip but we just discovered the problem. Our work installed a McAfee suited that prevented us from uninstall and installing programs even though we had admin rights. We had to stop the McAfee services to get everything to work properly.

• How do I uninstall Firefox Beta and re-install Firefox NOT-Beta, and save all of my bookmarks?

The constant updates associated with being a beta user are getting really annoying, and I want to opt out. Is it as easy as uninstalling, downloading the latest update of regular Firefox? Will all of my bookmarks and settings be saved?

Yes, you can uninstall the Firefox beta release and install the full version of the current Firefox 9.0.1 to change the update channel from beta to release.
Firefox 10 will be released at the end of this month.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a (re)install, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

The normal firefox browsers are all 32 bit. They will however run on 64 bit systems. I have not been following the 64 but scene, but I think there may be 64 bit builds for Linux distros, but I am not sure there is anything official for Windows yet.

I tried both recommendations of using the control panel to add/remove program and running the helper.exe in Program Files/Mozilla FireFox/uninstall. Hi Guys,
I had this same problem too, and i want to share to all of you my own fix for this kind of problem;
(READ FIRST: This step will wipeout everything that mozilla saved on your computer including : password, history and bookmarks.)
1. download the Revo Uninstaller'
- quick step guide for this:
select mozilla firefox, don't forget to uninstall everything that relates to mozilla including registry to clean them all up.
2. download mozilla firefox again
- AND REINSTALL. however on this stage, in some cases mozilla will not open at this stage.
3. Uninstall Mozilla firefox again NOW using control panel.
4. Restart the computer to refresh everything.
5. Reinstall mozilla firefox again, once you have received the prompt for "exporting or importing etc.. etc.. from Microsoft" that means its already working.. it will take around 5-10 sec to load up (in my case) .

• How can I uninstall Firefox 4 and reinstall the previous edition?

Yesterday I upgraded to Firefox 4. Sorry, but I do not like it at all, the rearrangement of "bars" at the top of the screen, removing the down arrow that was next to the "back arrow/forward arrow, to allow you to see a small current "history list.' But mostly, the fact that I can not use my Norton Internet Security, which has all my 'user names' and 'pass words'; which cost over a hundred dollars.
I want to change back to the previous edition of Firefox; which I purchased several years ago, and have been upgrading since then.
Thank you.

Maybe wait another day because Firefox 5.0 will be released on June 21 and maybe that version works better.

• Firefox Beta release notes redirect to 404 page

Firefox beta installer offers a link to "Details" when a new version is available.
However this link has been broken in the last releases. Version 28 sends me to the following invalid page:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/28.0/releasenotes/
The correct page is:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/28.0beta/releasenotes/

Yes, I see the same thing when I go to the Options window - Advanced panel in Firefox 28 Beta, select the Update tab, then click on the Show Update History button and finally click on Details (See my screenshot).
The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers. I'll escalate this to see if a Mozilla employee can look into the matter and possibly file a bug report.

• A Firefox search bar virus has taken hold of my system and wont let go! Is there any way I can avoid uninstalling Firefox every day to get rid of this?

The situation: Whenever I go to use the address bar or the small search toolbar (which is set to google) in my window, the search engine used instead is "search.searchcompletion.com", which returns very shitty search results and is annoying.
The things I have tried to fix this:
First, I disabled and deleted all my add-ons, changed my homepage back to google and updated my search engine to google. Tested search bar, *still infected* RESULT: NEGATIVE
Second, I downloaded a anti-virus/anti-malware program called Malwarebytes. It did good, catching 28 virus's in various files, quarantining them, and deleting them. I tested the search bar, *still infected* RESULT: NEGATIVE
Third, I read about typing in "about:config" into the Firefox address bar and changing a few things, as explained here. I tested the search bar, *still broken*. RESULT: NEGATIVE
Fourth, I read you can "manually delete the virus from your registery". I followed the instuctions carefully, deleting these strings: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main “Start Page”
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\Control Panel “HomePage”. Tested the search bar, *still infected* RESULT: NEGATIVE
Fifth, someone somewhere installed a special add on that blocked certain sites. Whatever I did it did not work, the site (search.searchcompletion.com) just lost it's formatting, but still did not let me search using google. RESULT: NEGATIVE
Fifth, I just uninstalled everything having to do with Firefox from my computer. I reinstalled it and tested the search bar and it worked!....
For 24 hours. When I turned on my computer today, the search.searchcompletion virus is back, and short of uninstalling Firefox, I do not know what to do.
I have no add-ons.
I have deleted temp internet files
I have virus protection
I have tried everything.
Help me.

Plugins usually are installed externally to Firefox. However, you can disable them in Firefox so that Firefox does not use them.
SearchReset is supposed to automate the task of resetting certain preferences, but you still can edit them manually if necessary.
Address Bar Search
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste keyword and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Right-click keyword.URL and choose Reset. This should restore Google as the default for address bar search.
Does that work?
Search Box
Usually it works to choose your preferred search engine from the drop-down. To remove an unwanted search engine plugin, usually the Manage Search Engines... choice at the bottom of the drop-down takes care of it.
Do either of those work?
There might be another way to hijack that search box; I think some of the other frequent responders probably are more familiar with it than I am.

• Why do I get an error 21 notice when I try to uninstall Firefox betta?

I was having problems with Firefox repeatedly crashing and decided to uninstall and reinstall. I'm a bit new to IT and installed MF 4.0 beta 11. I was told by my son that this is a trial version which I shouldn't really use until my knowledge is better. I tried to uninstall MF beta 11 but keep getting an error 21 notice. I installed MF 4.0 in the hope that it would uninstall the beta version but that hasn't happened.
How do I get rid of the beta version?

Please do the following.
Go to Download Firefox 4.0.1 and download a fresh installation file to the desktop.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.
After you complete the installation, go to the Plugins Check page and update those if necessary.

• How can I uninstall Firefox when it does not appear in control panel

Need to uninstall Firefox as it full of unwanted ads and crashes when using mail, online banking. Scanne d with Malaware and cleaned. Wish ten to reinstall Firefox

Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

• How can I uninstall Firefox 8 if Remove Programs and the uninstall helper.exe don't work?

I need to uninstall Firefox, but when I click "Remove" in Add/Remove Programs, nothing happens. I tried it several times. Add/Remove Programs shows Mozilla Firefox 3.0.6, which is strange since I have 8. I also tried running the helper.exe file in the uninstall folder, and nothing happened. I tried doing all of this after a few reboots as well as in Safe Mode, and had the same result. I searched the online forums, but I did not find anyone with exactly this same problem. I made sure Firefox was not running when I tried to uninstall it (double-checking the processes in Task Manager). I just ran Windows Update and everything else is working fine. I have no Antivirus software running. I closed all programs (down to essential Windows processes) before attempting the steps above. This is the first time I have ever attempted to uninstall Firefox.
Thanks!

You may only see leftover entries in Add and Remove programs, but the listed programs may have been replaced by the updated version. This can happen if the updater didn't remove those old entries.
