Can't uninstall, reinstall, or upgrade itunes

My itunes quit functioning not sure of what version. I think I got everything unistalled off my computer, but every time I try to install the latest version of itunes I get the following message "older version of apple software update can not be removed" I have searched everywhere, even unistalled and reinstalled quicktime - no help.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance - Jim

I uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime, then ran the Windows Installer Cleanup, and did not see anything for iTunes or Quicktime. When I tried to install iTunes again, I had the same problem.
=== Here is the problem ===
I am running Windows XP with all updates installed. I have (3) users sharing a single pc.
I was prompted to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes (7.6.1.9), and now iTunes will only run from (1) user. If you attempt to run iTunes from either of the other two users, the Windows installer starts and attempts to install iTunes. The installer is not able to install iTunes on either of the other two users.
I have attempted to uninstall iTunes and Quicktime (Which appears to be successful). But after re-installing the latest iTunes release, it only works on the original user of the PC.
I have installed the windows install clean-up program to try to clean-up any remaining files from iTunes/Quicktime, and it does not find anything.
When logging on to one of the other (2) users it attempts to install iTunes, but gets a Fatal Error, and does not complete sucessfully. I have even tried adding a new user account, but it does the same thing!
Has anyone experienced this problem, and have any suggestions on what can be done to correct the issue?

My appologies.  It's been a while since ive used a support forum.  Im using Windows XP Pro SP 3. 3GHz P4, 512 RAM
No, I can not see anything on the disc.  I cant even see the discs for that matter.  I have tried all three discs in both drives of my computer and it just shows the drive label.  When I double click, it says "please insert a disc in to drive."  But again, the discs work on othere computers, and other discs work in these drives.
I guess I should also say that I have tried the Add/Remove programs.  On the CS2 Tryout I get the error stated in the original message.  When I try to uninstall CS3 I get a brief popup flash on my screen and then it disappears.  Nothing more happens.
    Thanks

  • Firefox will not open, and I can't uninstall/reinstall because it says "close Firefox first"

After running Ccleaner today (and it asked me to "close Firefox or the internet cache will not be cleared", but Firefox was closed or so I think), I can't open Firefox at all; double-clicking the Firefox icon on the desktop does nothing, and no other way works. I thought of doing an uninstall/reinstall but it says "close Firefox first" - but for me it is truly closed.

See if you can Force Quit things holding CMD+Option+esc keys.

  • Can't uninstall/reinstall Photoshop - startup.exe shuts down

I've tried every proposed solution I could find, including the regsvr32 jscript.dll thing, running in XP SP2 mode (I'm in Vista), running in admin mode, running at the C:\ root, and putting the install files in an .iso, mounting it in a disk emulator, but I just can't uninstall or reinstall the Photoshop CS3 demo I installed a few days ago (which won't work at all - something about a "catastrophic installation failure" or somesuch). In all my experience with hundreds of different pieces of software, I've never encountered such a complete and total failure to work - and this from Adobe no less... What's going on?

i am sorry i can not answer your question. but i posted a topic on a similar problem. i can not uninstal or reinstall the trial either, after something went wrong after a day...can anyone help us?

  • Cannot uninstall, reinstall or use itunes!!

I have a pc using windows 8 (I believe).  Have used and downloaded music to an IPOD in the past.  But lately I cannot get itunes to open up.  I just hooked up an apple tv box and trying to connect to itunes, but everytime I try to open, uninstall (to reinstall, which it was suggested I do) it gives a message that it cannot locate 'itunes.msi'.  I have searched in program files, etc... and cannot locate it, and therefore cannot try to uninstall/reinstall.  What do I do?  I am not very savy on the computer.  Thanks a million!!

    Hi youngbloodmary,
Have you been using the steps in the following article to help you uninstall iTunes?
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
Especially take note that these items need to be uninstalled in a specific order:
    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • I can't uninstall, repair or install itunes?????

    I get an error:
Error with install file at C:\Windows\Installer\itunes.msi.
The file is none existent. I can't get past this when I try installing, uninstalling or repairing.
    What do I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Do the following, go here and install the MS cleanup utility.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
Then run it and select itunes.
Then delete the itunes folder in c:\program files\
    Then reinstall itunes.
Of course the question might be how did that file disappear. I hope you didn't delete it. As you found it its needed to do uninstalls and repairs.

  • Can't uninstall Aperture to upgrade - please help

Been trying to figure out how to upgrade to Aperture full licence for a week.
On load of trial it asks you to selct the 'mode' - i.e.: Continue Trial, Enter licence Key or 'Buy' a licence.
When you click on the "buy" you go to AppStore - but then you cannot buy a licence as you need to install the software and the application reports an error that the 'software is already installed'
Trying to uninstall the software I discover that in Lion you must use the LaunchPad to do this: instructions below from "help"
    Uninstall apps
To uninstall apps you purchased from the Mac App Store, hold down an app’s icon in Launchpad until all the icons begin to wiggle. Click an app’s delete button (x) to uninstall the app.If an icon doesn’t have a delete button, that app can’t be uninstalled.
To uninstall other apps, drag the app to the Trash (the Trash is located at the end of the Dock), and then choose Finder > Empty Trash. If you change your mind, before emptying the Trash, select the app in the Trash, and then choose File > Put Back.WARNING: When you empty the Trash, the app is permanently removed from your computer. If you have any files that you created with the app, you may not be able to open them."
However Aperture fits into the type "Cannot be uninstalled" highlighted in red above.
I am concerned that if I use a third party uninstaller I may lose application data.......  Please help!!
P.S.  Can you 'back up/save/ output etc the system settings for an application so as to not lose them on a reinstall??

I see from your signature you are using Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion.
Under Lion the Applications Folder is protected, and dragging from this folder simply creates Aliases on the Desktop. To delete an Application I found it easier to select the application and to use Command-delete. Then you will be prompted for your administrator password an can remove the application.
    Regards
    Léonie
    PS:
Can you 'back up/save/ output etc the system settings for an application so as to not lose them on a reinstall??
The setting, and all your Aperture presets, are stored in your user library, in the preferences folder and the Application Support folder. These will not be affected by moving the Aperture Application to the trash. Aperture will use the same settings when you relaunch it after the upgrade to the full version.
    Enjoy Aperture!

I'm trying to upgrade to the newest version of Itunes so I can actually use the itunes store and i'm getting an error saying that it can't remove the old version of Quicktime and the errors out of the install. Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry I cant help. I am having the same issue. I cannot install itunes or quicktime separately because the old version of quicktime could not be removed.

  • Can't uninstall old version of iTunes on Windows Vista

I have been trying to install updates for iTunes for a long time now (pretty much since update 7) and have not been able to do so because once the install occurs I'm that there is a resource network unavailable.  I'm them prompted to change the file path to something that contains "iTunes.msi".  I do that and it doesn't work.  When I search my computer for the "iTunes.msi" file it can't find it but during the download process the option is given to me when I browse, but it still doesn't work.
I have tried a manual download of iTunes.  I have tried to uninstall iTunes from my Control Panel and get the same response as above.
This issue is only affecting iTunes.  Other Apple programs have been able to update.
    Help.
    Thanks.

Try using Microsoft's Fix it solution at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall. Use it to uninstall iTunes. It bypasses this not uncommon problem. When the solution finishes, the selected program will be uninstalled. It can take several minutes and I have seen as much as half an hour.
After it uninstalls iTunes you should be able to install the new version.

  • Can't uninstall QuickTime or open iTunes, thanks 2 Ace Mega Codec Pack???

Everything was fine, updated my 60gb iPod everyday and played iTunes daily. (Happy Days) Until one fine day, i decided to download Ace Mega Codec Pack.(Sad Days) It all starts here... Ever since then I have not been able to open my precious iTunes, Getting this message: *ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.*
So here's what I’ve tried, Possibly making matters worse, I uninstalled Ace Mega Codec pack immediately and when prompted that some files I was removing was shared I said, Whatever and deleted them anyways in hope iTunes would just work after uninstalling! What a mess.
I then tried iTunes again with no joy, So I uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled and still the same message: *ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.*
I then read on a thread somewhere that, if I reinstall QuickTime, it should work.
And when trying to uninstall QuickTime I get this (+Add or remove programs+) message: *Fatal error during installation*. with no error code.
I just don’t know what to do, I’m on the verge of reinstalling Windows! (I bet things like this don’t happen on a Mac.)!!
Well I would really appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me,
    Thanks a million,
    Phill, (Stressed in Dublin, Ire.)

Ok, I actually fixed this cannot delete old Quicktime files based on Apple's guidance on support. I had done this step yesterday, and must have missed a few files. This is going into the System32 folder through my computer. I deleted the Itunes, Ipod and Quicktime folders, but did not realize that I had to continue scrolling because there were these two file name were at the end, and not in a folder, so they weren't deleted the first go around. So I deleted, then reinstalled on my C drive (not the default Program Files) as someone else here had instructed, and Quicktime is now working! Now, I will attempt ITunes....wish me luck!
Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder.
