Can't unmount usb pendrive automatically

Hi everybody..
I had some problems with filenames on usb pendrives or cds, I mean if the filename included non-latin characters (á é í ó ú ñ etc), the character is not recognized and a "?" symbol appears instead. I have used some hal policies but it didn't work, btw I use hal/udev for mounting removable media (not fstab).
Then, I found a solution in the wiki, I should use an udev rule, and I'm using this one http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … _it_exists: Mounting to /media using the partition label if it exists (I tried the following rule too). It solved the non-latin characters problem (it is an utf8 and iso problem for ntfs/vfat media).
The problem now is when I try to unmount the pendrive by right-clicking on it and selecting "unmount volume" an error message appears and it says that the volume has been mounted manually and can't be unmounted. If I unmount the pendrive manually (with the console), it works, but I want hal/udev to do it automatically (with right-click/unmount volume)..
What should I do, do I have to include something else in the udev rule?
Thanx in advance..

that's so strange, that rules are for mount and umount...
if u can mount automatically, u can umount at the same way...
check it out!

  • RESOLVED:Trouble unmounting USB pendrive from KDE desktop

I've been using Arch for about 6 months, and I never used a pendrive until now. Plugging it in gives a "new media detected what do you want to do?" prompt, which is nice. Then I get a nice icon on the desktop, which is great.
When I right click on the pendrive icon and go to "safely remove" I get a KDE glass-breaking crash which states "the device was successfully unmounted but could not be ejected."
I am using udev, hal, and fam. My fstab is very very simple, no entries for cdrom or floppy, only / and swap.

tcmdvm wrote:I just tried your fix and it didn't improve any. I am using kdemod. Sometimes it unmounts with no errors and then again it errors. Even with the error, it seems to be reading and writing OK. It just annoying to hear the breaking glass.
Hmmm. Did you check out the file /etc/group to be sure that your user name had been added to the "disk" group? Did you log out and then log back in to make your user's membership in the group active?
You are right, reading and writing are fine, but that shattering glass sound and the extra dialog you have to click away are really annoying. It's odd that you same it works some times. When you do get an error, what exactly does it say?
To get more information you might try doing
    eject <device>
from a console prompt instead of using "Safely Remove". This is basically what the kdeeject script does. For <device> use the real device node, i.e. if you have a symlink to a real /dev device, use the target, not the symlink. If it fails it will usually dump a little more diagnostic info to the console. For <device> you may also use the dynamic mount-points that are created in the /media directory when the drive is mounted automatically. You may even be able to run kdeeject directly from the console to get the same information, but I'm not sure.

  • What file format can be used to play 3D videos on Panasonic TVPlasma3D with USB PenDrive?

What file format can be used to play 3D videos on Panasonic TVPlasma3D with USB PenDrive?
I writed to Panasonic Italy support about this question:
"What file format can be used to play 3D videos on Panasonic TVPlasma3D with USB PenDrive?"
Panasonic writed me in a very poor manner and said me:
"...riproduce formati: AVCHD (anche 3D), SD-Video, DivXHD, JPEG, MP3, AAC tramite USB e Slot SD/SDHC/SDXC card..."
"...formato : AVCHD estensione file nella SD: .MTS..."
I made a few videos edited with PremiereProCS5 and exported as H.264 Coding and .mp4 file extension, all side by side, with layout 1920x1080pixels that includes two stretched frames at 960x1080 pixels.
This is the same image layout that uses the Panasonic 3D consumer camcorder "HDC-SDT750", that record AVCHD videos with file extension .MTS.
I also tried to export another video as MPEG2 with .mpg file extension.
But at the store the tests failed, and I cannot see anything!
    My questions are:
    1) What format can be used by PremiereProCS5 for exporting the Stereoscopic 3D videoclip and play them via USB port on Panasonic TVPlasma3D such "TX-P46VT20"?
    2) What codec should be used? H.264? H.264-bluray?
    3) What file extension should have the movie file? .mp4?
    Many Thanks!
    Horsepower0171.

-I already read entirely those threads, but nothing about stereoscopic 3D AVCHD movies through USB port, on Panasonic TVPlasma3D.
(Also, Sony said me that is not possible to play 3D videos on your 3DTV through USB port).
I tried to made a H.264 videoclip, with .MP4 extension, at 960x1080p side-by-side layout, but nothing was displayed, and black screen.
I think that just the AVCHD movies, with .MTS extension, that comes from Panasonic consumer camcorder "HDC-SDT750", can play the 3D videos via HDMI cable, not USB port.
But not the exported videos from PremierePro via USB port.
I seen this tutorial from David K Helmly:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/dhelmly#p/a/u/1/_YtF0c2bmkw
Dave export the video from PremiereProCS5 as "MPEG2-bluray" format with "Match Source Attributes (HighQuality)" Preset, and build the Bluray Disc in EncoreCS5, with the footage as MPEG2 with .m2v file extension:
    1) Anyone tried to play correctly in 3D, those MPEG2-.m2v side-by-side files, in Panasonic3DTV, with BlurayDiscReader?
    2) Why MPEG2.m2v side-by-side?
    3) The official standard stereoscopic 3D format, is not the .MVC (MultiViewCoding) for Bluray3D Disc?
    I am confused!
    Help!

  • USB Hard Drive that Disk Utility says it can't unmount

I have a 93.2 Gb Hard Drive (from an old G4 PowerBook) inside an enclosure with USB connection. While trying to recover data from it using Data Rescue (on a G4 PowerBook), Data Rescue II hung. After restart, the USB Hard Drive can not be read at all. Disk Utility says it can't repair it or erase it because it can't "Unmount" the disk. What can I do with the USB Hard Drive?

try this: open system preferences/spotlight/privacy and drag that external into spotlight privacy then try Disk Utility.

  • Copy to USB to Fast / Can't Unmount

So, the title pretty much says it all.  I copy a file to the USB drive (~700mb) which goes super fast, then I can't unmount the drive for a long time after that (~3-4min).  There's no copy dialogue open, same issue with all file managers/basic cli cp, mv, etc.  Really, really, annoying.  I've tried multiple formats and filesystem types.
    Any insight would be appreciated!
EDIT:  I almost forgot to mention that the drive is mounting to /run/media/DEVICE_NAME.  In my experience I always thought they were supposed to mount to /media/DEVICE_NAME?
Last edited by clappboard (2012-05-27 21:23:56)

Udisks2 now mounts in /run/media/$HOME/$LABEL. This is the default behavior. I read /media be deprecated soon.
I have been reading about disk umounting for a while but I am unable to get a decisive answer about how to safely remove drives in Linux.
Here is what I have been doing.
    sdparm --command=sync $Drive
    sleep 5
    sdparm --command=stop $Drive
    umount $Drive
But then again spinning down is not recommended because most drives will only spin down 50,000 times. What works is a little sketchy.

  • Can't attach USB devices in Windows XP Mode

I am still trying to set up my new Probook G1 450.  It is presently in the original Win 7 Pro 64-bit OS.
I am trying to use Windows XP Mode.  I can set up XP Mode, but I can't get USB access under it. But for me, the whole point of getting XP Mode is to be able to run two key programs which require USB access. The USB devices have been successfully installed in Win 7 (it's the programs that require XP Mode).
I have tried with VMLiteXPMode, Virtual Box, and finally with Windows Virtual PC. The results are about the same. I am presently trying Windox Virtual PC. When I access the USB button on the top of the XP Mode box, there is a list of all the USB devices. This looks like things are fine. All the devices are there. Hooray. Oops, too soon! It still doesn't work. One still has to "attach" the USB device, by clicking its listing under USB devices. When I do this, I get the following error message:
"Could not attach the USB device. You can attach the USB to a different USB port or restart the virtual machine and try again."
Yes, I can and have done all those things, and  I get the same error message again and again and again. This is true for all USB devices (except the USB mouse, which works perfectly and automatically in XP mode and is *not* listed under USB):
    * Epson Perfection scanner
    * HP Laserject printer
    * the computer's own HP HD Webcam,
    and
    * the computer's own Wireless/Bluetooth Device
For example, the scanner and printer will work well in the host machine, where I have installed them, but they can't be "attached" in XP Mode.
    Notes:
    * I have enabled "integration features"
    * I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the devices.
    * If I try to install the printer in XP Mode, I can't do that, because this requires, at some point, the printer being plugged in to the USB. And I get the above error message when I try to attach it.
Also I have already had to deal with one driver issue (it came with the wrong driver for wireless; the right driver wasn't on the HP support page and couldn't be obtained by the computer's own "update' function),  but when I finally discovered the right driver, wireless worked flawlessly
There is yet another possible driver issue, but I'll leave that for another topic later. One thing at a time.

  • Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard using USB PENDRIVE Help..!

    Dear All;
    I have an Intel macbook which had TIGER10.4.11 earlier. As i realised that snow Leopard can be Installed Bypassing "Leopard 10.5" i tried it out but in Vain. please see below;
My Macbooks Internal Optical Drive has Fried as usual & the Install DVD of OS 10.6 is a 10A432 build (which i assume is enough for a SL clean install). connecting a USB External DVD drive i double clicked MAC OS X DVD on Tiger platform and followed the instructions which said to restart,on restart if i remember correctly (no customize options were present)and using Disk utility i erased the Whole internal drive thereby removing Tiger completely.
Restored the "MAC OS X INSTALL DVD" to a new 8 gb hp Pendrive (after formatting in mac os- journaled).
On startup clicked Option > chose USB install > clicked language Tab (Please Note no customize Tab or anything else was present which i assume is the case with all) . It showed "installing mac os x " and then a dialogue appeared saying +"Installation requires that Mac os x 10.5 be already insatlled on computer"+ alongwith two tabs RESTORE FROM BACKUP + Restart. Meanwhile the top menu Bar is inactive and greyed. so i chose "Restore from backup" at which point the top Menu bar becomes active. Using Disk Utility i made sure to frmat teh whole drive again but after quitting it there was no change and installation didnt move further.
Please Tell me is it absolutely necessary to install 10.5 or is it some problem with USB or where else i maybe going wrong.
I would be glad if any of you experts can clearly state the steps to Install Mac OS 10.6 on this macbook (with no OS whatsoever on a clean internal Disk) using only a USB Pendrive.
    Thanks much in Advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Regardless of what you do, you must backup your data at least twice before installing anything*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Furthermore, make sure all your software is Snow Leopard compatible in these links:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
    Now as for your installation:
Restored the "MAC OS X INSTALL DVD" to a new 8 gb hp Pendrive (after formatting in mac os- journaled).
You are approaching it the wrong way. Either:
    1. Verify the PRAM battery of the Mac in question isn't dead. Sometimes internal "dead" optical drives get revived when the PRAM battery is replaced. Anytime a Mac is over 4 years, the battery might need replacing, and that might fix the optical drive.
    2. Connect a bootable optical drive to the Mac and run the installer from it to the hard drive of the Mac. http://www.macsales.com/ has both internal and external optical drives.
    3. Have a technician clean the drive and make sure your disc is usable on their computer to verify your problem isn't with your installer disc.
Your pen drive is too small to install the operating system. You'd need a minimum of a 16GB pen drive to install. Furthermore, double check your machine has at least 1 GB of RAM in Apple menu -> About This Mac. 512MB of RAM, or 768MB of RAM won't cut it. If you choose a pen drive method, here's what you must do:
    4. Find another Mac of the same vintage and model with a working optical drive. Format a 16 GB pen drive GUID partitioning with Disk Utility. Install the operating system on the pen drive. Boot from the pen drive off the Mac with the bad optical drive, and use a cloning software such as Superduper, to clone Snow Leopard. Mind you this method would require you to erase the hard drive on the Mac. It is best if you just fix the optical drive on the other Mac if you wish to have a chance of preserving your data.
Another thing I realized reading your post:
dialogue appeared saying "Installation requires that Mac os x 10.5 be already insatlled on computer"
If you got that dialog you are using the wrong disc. That disc is only to be used with Macs which shipped 3 weeks prior to Snow Leopard's release to the date of Snow Leopard's release. The $29.95 installer available from the Apple Store has no such limit. Your procedure of restoring I doubt will work with a flash drive. My method might work if you have the correct disc*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html

  • Can't unmount raid set

After a RAID 1 setup on mac mini Lion Server, I decided I need to change partition table.
Trying to delete the RAID set in recovery mode (booted from USB boot disk) the delete failed, the disks are listed as being "online".
Booted into disk target mode and accessing the mini disks via thunderbolt from MBP, I tried running diskutility - again without success.
using comand line diskutil gives me the following error:

    Hi BDAqua,
after I posted I did some more research and figured that i had to remove the drives with the "diskutil appleRAID remove" command.
after that everything worked as expected.

Then I did a complete reset. this did not help either. Device still seen as ipad with only the option to remove the ipad.
    All the tabs are gone.
I have tried so many things. ( uninstall itunes,...)
Can someboy help me out to make my Ipad visible again in my itunes.

  • Macbook 2012 Mid: Can't mount USB mass storage after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I'm having big problems with USB mass storages. After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac doesn't see some USB storage devices (mostly USB sticks and Android phone's memory cards via USB. My external USB 3.0 hard disks work fine) at all even though the devices themselves (for example my Android phone) are clearly recognized according to the System Report. When I plug them in, they don't show up on my Finder or on Disk Utility.
I've searched everywhere and it seems like some other people are having the same problem, none seems to offer a definite solution. I've even formatted my HD and reinstalled Mavericks from the recovery partition. Now it mounts a USB stick that was in one of the USB ports at the time of installation but still doesn't read anything else! The funny thing is when I boot into Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition, I can mount any USB devices including the USB stick and the Android phone I'm having problems on Mavericks without any problems. I can even see then when I boot into the recovery so there's clearly something wrong with Mavericks.
Any chance someone has figured out a solution for this? Apple should've address this long time ago.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? Note: If the devices are not in Mac OS X format, they normally won't mount in safe mode, but they should appear in Disk Utility.
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't capture usb cam

It seems that JMStudio can't capture usb cam. It just give me a pink screen.
    Platform : Win98 SE
    camera : logitech usb cam
    JDK version : 1.3.1
    JMF version : 2.1.1
JMStudio works well when I use a BT848 capture card. I don't know what's the problem. Please advise.
    Anson

    Hi !
    Follow the procedure :
    1) Install JDK successfully.
    2) Install JMF successfully.( This will set the class
    path etc. for you automatically)
    3) Connect the WebCam.
    4) Install the Driver Software which comes along with
    the WebCam.
    5) Run the JMFRegistry.exe (Which you can find @
    JMF2.1.1/bin folder )
In that click the Capture Devices option. The program
will capture the attached/available media devices.
    6) Run jmfinit.exe, ( in the above mentioned folder)
    7)Try capturing the Audio/Video from your mic/WebCam
If you are able to do this, your implementation is
    successful.
    Hope this helps !
    Max !Hi Max,
    Thanks for your reply first.
Actually I have captured video successfully by using a pci capture card. But when I use a usb camera, JMStudio just show a pink screen or just halt my pc (btw, JMFRegistry can successfully detected my usb camera).

  • Can't mount usb devices as a normal user

    Hi.
I woud like to ask for help. I've been struggling with some "bug" that i came with Arch and usb devices (disks, pendrives). I can't mount it as a normal user using KDE default mounting software (Dolphin, for an exmample). I can mount it only in therminal by using sudo privileages. Is there a way to fix it? I read it, the same problem:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=180025
I tried to check everything according this topic, also with udisk2 archwiki thread but on my desktop machine i just can't mount usb devices without root password. This is how the error looks like for a Dolphin:
<Over sized Image removed. URL link preserved>
This is the error, from picture
Error when trying to use acces to "removable device 7,5GB". System showed: The requested operation has failed. Error checking authorization:

Could somebody help me? I even installed udisk mounting tool to mont without root password, added 50-udisks.policy and it just does not work.
    Help.
I can mount it wit terminal by typing
    sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/usb
than i'm asked for password and it is mounted. Don't know why i can't mount it without password when connecting usb devices to usb port.

  • Want to communicate with a Transcend Jetflash usb pendrive

I want to communicate with a Transcend Jetflash usb pendrive through VISA USB raw can any one suggest me anything about this

    Hi tanu,
It is possible to use the VISA Driver Development Wizard to create a driver for your USB device, provided you have all the necessary information about the device such as vendor ID, product ID, and communication protocol.  Here are a KnowledgeBase entry and a Tutorial that should help you get started:

If all you are wanting to do is write data to the USB drive, then it might be easier to let the OS use it's own driver and just accesses the mounted drive with LabVIEW.

  • Can i use a pendrive with the ipad mini 2 and access the files in the pendrive

can i use a pendrive with the ipad mini 2 and access the files in the pendrive

I've literally had a 50/50 success rate with drives. But even if you get it to work, all you'll be able to access are photos or videos that follow a very strict naming convention. You cannot access documents or music, and you cannot write anything off the iPad onto a flash drive.
If you want to access photos or videos, you'll get more reliable results with an SD card than fighting with a USB drive.

  • [SOLVED] Problem compiling kernel for an Arch install on USB pendrive

I've installed Arch linux to a USB pendrive and I'm building a kernel for my specific hardware (Acer Aspire One) so as there is no kernel26.img file needed.
I've used gothicknight's custom kernel but it doesn't work for me as it doesn't recognise my USB stick (/dev/sdb).  Instead, it just recognises the SSD (/dev/sda).  I believe the standard Arch kernel uses a "hook" called "usb" in order to work from a USB stick - at least that's how I've got the current (default) Archlinux kernel working.
I'm not that skilled at linux and am still quite new to kernel compilation (I've done it once or twice before and, yes, I've read the ArchWiki articles - both of them).  Can anyone tell me what I should do to get things working on a USB stick install?
    Kind regards

Solved it.  I didn't need to recompile.  I just needed to add 'rootdelay=5' as a kernel boot parameter.
