Can't update 3gS to ios5

Can't get any help from apple because I'm out of warranty.
I highly doubt there is a resolution that doesn't involve reformatting my hard drive or something drastic like that!
All I wanted to do was updatemy 3GS to ios5 and this is the debacle I encountered:
1. A new iphone software version 5.0 is available, but requires itunes 10.5. Would you like to download iTunes 10.5 now.

2. Apple Software Update:
Errors occurred while installig the updates. If the problem persists, choose Tools > Download Only and try installing manually.

3. Run installer

Based on previous problems with Apple amy iphones I've made the assumption it aint gonna work with wasting a day of my life restoring PC and iTunes etc....
Anyone think differently???

Failure to backup while updating 3GS to iOS5 - now iTunes doesn't recognize iPhone!

Hi, I'm trying to update my 3GS to iOS5. Working on a brand-new Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2. Made sure I had the newest iTunes (10.5), synced my phone, transferre purchases to the computer, backed up manually for good measure. Downloaded the iOS5 update with no problem, and started the update process. Seemed to be going slowly but surely through the "backup" step of the update process. I left for five or ten minutes, and came back to a possible disaster:
- computer had gone to sleep (guess I could have changed preferences, but I assumed that the update-in-progress would keep the computer awake)
- iPhone screen shows the "plug USB into iTunes" graphic
- when I woke up the computer, it showed an error message - upgrade failed. I'm pasting the text from the iPhone Updater Log below... it ends with "Restore Error 2009."
- iPhone no longer shows up as a device in iTunes (or iPhoto). Tried closing and opening iTunes, disconnecting and reconnecting iPhone from USB port, and moving to second USB port. None of these worked. iPhone screen continues to display the "connect USB to iTunes" graphic. I found some relevant lines in the "all messages" log - pasting those below too.)
Anything I can do, short of bring both computer and phone to the Apple Store? (The phone is past warranty but I have AppleCare for the new computer)
Does the failure to back up mean that there is no previous backup I can get to? Any way to check if there's a working backup on the computer without it recognizing the iPhone?
All my apps, contacts, calendar items, music and photos are on my computer, so at least it seems that my data is not all lost. But the phone-to-computer connection doesn't seem to be coming back. Wonder if restarting computer could get it to recognize iPhone, but afraid of doing any more damage.

Can't recover 3GS after IOS5 upgrade attempt - phone no longer seen in iTunes

Tried upgrade on 3GS to IOS5, got msg that iTunes detected phone in recovery mode and I must restore. iTunes no longer sees the phone so restore doesn't work. Win XP sees the phone driver when I connect the phone, and driver says it is working properly. Have went through the entire support topic "iPhone not appearing in iTunes" and found no problem. Rebooted computer 3 times and tried all USB ports - iTunes still doesn't see the phone. Any ideas on how to recover this phone?

my problem occurred when I upgraded to IOS5 on my iPhone 4. I received an unable to sync message that indicated that there was no space left on my iPhone; and a "Other" Capacity indicator appeared on the bottom of the iPhone device sync screen (in yellow color) and noted an overage of 12GB! Ofcourse, prior to the upgrade I actually had 6GB free on my 32GB iPhone. So, there is a bug. The following link indicates a few solutions and hopefully it will answer your concern. However, I had to restore as the first two solutions didn't work. Furthermore, about 3.3GB of "Other" remains while I synced up. Clearly, the problem has not been resolved. No SMS send or receive ability after updating 3GS to ios5

Synced up my husband's iPhone 3Gs this past Sunday night for the first time ever to update it from ios 4.1 to ios 5. Since then, he has been unable to send or receive ANY text messages. I tried a backup and restore last night and was able to get ONE imessage to go through to my own phone, but that's it. During the process Sunday night, he also signed up for a new iTunes account (we usually use the same one). Would this have anything to do with it? I've tried restoring Network Settings. Any help would be much appreciated.

So he can't send regular Pay-Text or iMessage ? Or is it only iMessage that wont do ?
With his new Apple ID, make sure to activate it under the iMessage settings and to enter his phone number.
Remember that only other iPhones with iMessage acvitated will receive texts as iMessage.
If there's still a problem, try to turn off the iPhone and back on.

Error (-43). when updating 3GS to iOS5 - any tips?

I am trying to add iOS5 to my 3GS, but have gotten error 43 three times now which says:
"An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (-43). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPhone.

I have the iPhone 4 and I'm having the same message. My Husband's (also iPhone 4) updated with no problems, my Mother in Law's is getting the same message with error code (-50) instead of (-43) we all have the same phone, same iTunes account, and the same computer. I've tried deleting things off of my phone so I've got well over half my capacity empty and its still not working. Ive tried at least 10 times... I'm stumped.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

I've got a dead Mac that held my iTunes account. All content is safe in external drives. I am overseas and not getting a new Mac for a couple of months, but would like to upgrade my iPhone and iPad to IOS5. I've got another computer (Win7) that I could use to accomplish this, but do not want to wipe these phones in the process. What are my options at this point?

Actually, you can burn a DVD or USB (8GB) thumb drive and let him boot and install from it. Or, you can actually run the InstallESD.dmg file from his machine. I've done both and Lion installs.
Personally, I would burn a DVD or thumb drive so you always have it.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable DVD.
Launch Disk Utility and click the Burn button
Select the InstallESD.dmg file from your desktop as the image to burn. Insert a blank DVD and wait for the the image to be burned.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable USB thumb drive.
Open Disk Utility and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the left side pane. Go to the Partition tab ad select 1 Partition from the drop down menu. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on the left. Click the Options button under the partition table and choose GUID Partition Table. You will need this to make the drive bootable on a Mac. Hit the Apply button when ready to format the drive (it will erase everything on the drive).
Click on the Restore tab and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the Source. Drag the USB partition to the Destination. Hit the Restore button and it will create the bootable USB drive with the OS X Lion installer

Windows 7 (64 bit) - can't update itunes.

i get a message "thre is a problem with this windows installer package. a program required for this install to complete could not be run". no hints as to what the problem program might be, thank you. I can't update ipad to ios5 without updating the pc (grrr!). any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Repair your Apple software Update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU in All programs, go to control panel/Programs n features/highlight ASU and click REPAIR

No. You can only update to iOS 6.1.3 now which is the most up to date software for your iPad. You cannot just update to iOS 5. You will need to update via iTunes on your computer - if you do want to update the software.

Error 23, 28, 29: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Also attempt to restore while connected with the white USB Dock Connector cable that shipped with your device, on a known good computer and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value, (00 499901 064000 0), can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software can also cause these errors.

I am still running iOS 3 (1.3) on my iPhone 3GS and I'm happy with it - but all the new apps requires iOS4 and now I'm sick of this. I want iOS4 (and not iOS5, cause it will drain my battery as far as I've understood).
How can I update my iPhone 3GS in a normal way to iOS4, through iTunes or another easy way? I have never jailbreaked an iPhone so I don't know too much about "backdoors" into my iPhone.

The only Firmware in the iOS 4 series that Apple is still signing for the iPhone 3GS is 4.1. So you could restore to 4.1. You will have to download the 4.1 IPSW from Apple, and then install it with iTunes, Option Click Mac or Shift Click Windoz, on the Restore Button and then select the 4.1 IPSW on your computer. The current iTunes may give meaningless Errors, I doubt because you are Upgrading. But if Error Message is given you will have to search the Web for ways to Exit Recovery.
