Can't update any software

I havn't updated my software for a while, and when I try to use the software update feature now it tells me that the computer cannot search for updates as it does not have a network connection, but the internet is working fine. I really need to update as my email account no longer works without an updated version of Safari. I am not sure what model my computer is, but I got it in 2008. Can anyone help?

As an addition to the original reply...
I also had the software update network error. Deleting the user/library/Preference file didn't work for me. There are three preference files. The other two are user/library/Preferences/by host and one on the hard drive in Library/preferences
Deleting all three software update plist files did correct the error for me.

I suppose all you can do is be content with the limitations of your old iBook G4 running Tiger. It would be possible to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard, but I would not recommend doing that because that secondhand software is quite expensive, so giving little improvement over what you have.
If you desire a more modern operating system, you will need a more modern 'Intel' computer. I expect you realise that and are simply seeking confirmation of that.

  • Can't update ANY software always get this: "An unexpected error occurred"

    Hi,
Can someone tell me why it is that whenever i try to upgrade any software on my MacBook pro I get the message: An unexpected error occurred (error code -10822). It just started happening yesterday, and it happens with everything i try to upgrade. Can someone help me solve this problem?
    Thanks!!

If disk permissions repair is failing, then boot with your install disc, launch Disk Utility, and repair the disk, not permissions. Also, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 for more. Report back.

I'm trying to updating my macbook pro 17 inch but always is saying contact itunes support

What exactly is it that you're trying to update? Do you mean you're trying to update apps purchased from the Mac App Store? If so, go here -  Mac App Store Customer Service - to contact them.
If that's not what you mean, please post back with details as to what you're trying to accomplish and when and how this message appears.
    Regards.

  • I downloaded the new version of iTunes 11.0.3 and now I get this error when I go to update Apps...any solutions????  You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software.

You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software.
    any soultions???

Same here. Just becoming a nightmare. Updated iTunes and now can't update apps it itself is showing as available updates. Count me in on the latest "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." bug.
Next I have to post about a new problem in iPhoto on a new thread.... it lost the "link" between some but not all photos I have in the library and what it itself posted to FaceBook a few hours ago...
    Incredibly frustrating.

  • You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software.??

I have recently been having issues signing into my Apple ID and decided to go in and update my email and change my password.
Since changing my email and password I have been unable to update any of my apps. I receive this error message when trying to update, "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."
I have looked into other forums and communities for a solution to this issue but from what I have read iTunes/Apple has yet to figure out a solution.
I have also read that the cause of this issue can be linked to two things.
One, is if you have multiple accounts on one computer. I only have one iTunes account/ Apple ID on this computer. This is my personal laptop and no one else has ever loaded on another account.
The second cause is linked to the country to which the apps were downloaded in. My computer and Apple ID were both created in the US, however 9 months ago I moved to New Zealand on a one year work holiday visa. Since living in New Zealand for the past 9 months I have been buying and updating apps, it wasn't until today when I received this error message.
I would really like to find a solution to this problem, but at the very least I would like to know what exactly caused this issue so that others may hopefully steer clear.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Cheers.

I think the issue is that iTunes (for whatever reason) thinks I have two Apple ID's.
also, to further complicate the issue, when i try updating the apps from my iPod the iTunes store is still recognizing my old hotmail Apple ID. So when I go to enter my password it won't accept because it doesn't match with the old Apple ID, even though it is the same account (just new Apple ID name).
I have tried signing out within the App Store and re-signing in with my Apple ID but it still brings up my old Apple ID name when I try to update.

  • I guess the problem come from me or I really need those contacts before he calls me for it. I'll try some method that I got from some responders on your support website. Do you have or can you recommand any software that can solve this problem?

One more thing. I just update my iphone that my boss gave to me but it seems to be like it giving me some trouble. My iphone was updated not too long and was successful. I try to lock into it and it telling me emergency call. I plug it to my itune and it telling me that the sim card is not valid or supported. So I inserted my sim card that I usually use to call and it still saying the same. Please help me get into it.

And as far as paying for phone support, here are a few tips:
If you call your carrier first and then they route you to Apple, you usually don't have to pay for phone support.
If you are talking to Apple and they ask you to pay a support fee, ask if you can get an exception this time.  That usually works once, but they keep track of the times you've been granted such an exception.
If you still end up paying the support fee, that fee only applies if it's not a hardware related issue.  In other words, if it can be fixed by just talking over the phone and following Apple's instructions, then the fee applies.  But if your device is deemed to have a hardware failure that caused the issue, then the fee should not apply, and you can ask for it to be waived after the fact.
This forum is free, and almost all of the technical support articles the Apple tech advisors use are available on this website.  Literally 99% of what they can do over the phone is just walking you through the publicly available support articles.  In other words, you're paying the fee to have them do your research for you.  It's like hiring a research consultant to go look stuff up in the public library so you don't have to.  You're capable of doing it; you'd just rather pay someone to do it for you.
It's like Starbucks.  You know how to make coffee.  Everyone knows how to make coffee.  And Starbucks coffee isn't any better than what you could make at home for far less.  But you want the convenience.  So you're really paying a convenience fee.  Milk is more expensive at 7-Eleven than it is at the grocery store... because it's a convenience store.

  • HT1338 I'm unable to update any software on my macbook air and iMac

I'm unable to update any software on my macbook air and iMac getting the following error "to update your software you need to sign in with the account you used to purchase it" any help is appreciated

Please try each of the following steps you haven't already taken, until the issue is resolved. After each step, relaunch the App Store and try again.
    1. Follow the instructions in the Apple Support article linked below:
Mac App Store: Cannot update App Store purchases or updates do not seem available
    2. If any App Store purchases were made under a different Apple ID, or if the bundled iLife applications were accepted under a different ID, sign in to the App Store with that ID to update.
    3. Alternatively, delete the probem applications and re-download them with the ID you're using now. If you haven't already purchased them with that ID, you'll have to do that first, because purchases can't be transferred from one account to another.
    4. Select the Purchased tab in the App Store window. If you see an item in the list marked "You have 3 apps to accept," click Accept.
    5. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window may open with a file selected. If it does, delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your login password.
    Then repeat step 4.
    6. Select
    Store ▹ View My Account
from the App Store menu bar, then select View hidden purchases. If you're trying to update any hidden purchases, unhide them.
    7. Launch iTunes and select
    Store ▹ Authorize This Computer
    from the menu bar.
    8. If you've moved any App Store apps out of the applications folder, or into a subfolder, put them back. Never move or copy those applications.
    9. Contact Account and Billing Support on this page:
Apple - Mac App Store - Contact Support
