Can't update BIOS?

Am I to understand that I simply cannot update my BIOS, on account of that I'm using WinXP with NTFS and don't know anyone with 98/ME? I really hope I'm missing something here, because that sucks. I shouldn't have to rely on "friends" with outdated operating systems in order to keep my BIOS up to date.
I also don't usually keep a floppy drive in my computer. I had to install one specifically to flash my BIOS. Can't this be automated by Windows yet? Sheesh. A little help here?

Do not flash your bios from a floppy diskette. it will fail.  If you will
do a search of people who have done this they all have problems flashing from
a 3 1/2 disk.  Flash from hard drive or cd rom as stated in flash procedures for
you mobo.  Finally if there really is not a problem with your bios and hardware their is not good reason to update bios.  If its not broke don't fix it!!!!!!!!

The ME Interface provides thermal management for Intel Mainboards. • Tecra S11 - After HDD replacement I can't update BIOS

My Hard Disk in Tecra S11 died, and I have purchased a new SSD.
Everything work OK, but I can not update BIOS any more. Update utility show an error:
Error: Preparing to update was failed.
You have not given permission to execute the update.
    What to do? Please help.

    > Error: Preparing to update was failed.
    > You have not given permission to execute the update.
    Do you have Admin rights?
Sounds like the issue could be related to missing privileges which are needed to run a update.
You could enable the admin account following these steps:
Choose command prompt (the black box cmd)
In the box type net user administrator /active:yes
Then log out. Usually an additional user account should be visible Administrator.
Now log in using this account and try to execute the BIOS update.
Note: in many cases the VAP (value added package) is needed to run the update BIOS.
Be sure also, that package has been unzipped correctly before running the exe file.

  • Can't update BIOS boot logo

    Hi,
I've tried changing the BIOS boot logo of my Thinkpad E420, but a specific image isn't working, for some reason.  I use the last "BIOS update utility", being 1.26, from here.  No error shows up during the upgrade.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT037710
This is what I should do to change the BIOS Logo:
     *  NOTES ON CUSTOM START UP IMAGE                                    *
     *  THIS VERSION OF THE FLASH UPDATE PROGRAM GIVES THE OPTION OF      *
     *  REPLACING (OR ELIMINATING) THE DEFAULT "LENOVO" IMAGE THAT IS     *
     *  DISPLAYED DURING SYSTEM START UP.                                 *
     *  GUIDELINES FOR CUSTOM START UP IMAGE:                             *
     *  1. THE IMAGE FILE SIZE IS LIMITED TO 30KB.                        *
     *  2. RESOLUTION OF THE IMAGE SHOULD BE LESS THAN 640X480.           *
     *  3. VALID FORMATS FOR THE IMAGE ARE AS FOLLOWS:                    *
     *        BITMAP (.BMP) FILE FORMAT                                   *
     *        JPEG (.JPG) FILE FORMAT                                     *
     *        GIF (.GIF) FILE FORMAT                                      *
     *  STEPS TO ENABLE CUSTOM START UP IMAGE:                            *
     *  1. PREPARE YOUR IMAGE AND COPY IT TO THE SAME PLACE WHERE         *
     *     WINUPTP.EXE EXISTS.                                            *
     *  2. RENAME THE IMAGE AS FOLLOWS.                                   *
     *         BITMAP FILE --> LOGO.BMP                                   *
     *         JPEG FILE --> LOGO.JPG                                     *
     *         GIF FILE --> LOGO.GIF                                      *
     *  3. RUN WINUPTP.EXE AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.                       *
     *  AFTER YOU UPDATE THE BIOS ON YOUR SYSTEM, YOUR LOGO WILL          *
     *  APPEAR ON THE STARTUP SCREEN.                                     *
Interestingly, this image work as it should:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/600u9o08a1ax1wp/LOGO_OLD.jpg
    But this one don't:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/hrayfjslyv57o53/LOGO.JPG
I never get any error during the update, I click "YES" on the popup "Custom image was found, do you want to use it", but if I chose the second image, I get a black screen at the BIOS logo (Computer continue booting normally, and I can access the BIOS - but I have a black screen).
What's wrong with the second image?  How is the second image different from the first one, that does work?  I don't get it. :/
I can also succesfully restore the BIOS logo to the Default, if I delete LOGO.JPG from the update folder.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi GameX,
the only difference that I can see immediately is something which caused me problems with a particular web publishing software once, took me ages to find the bug.  Your second picture has JPG as the ending, the first jpg - maybe the utility is case sensitive on file endings??

  • Qosmio G30 PQG31E - No XP 32 drivers? Can't update BIOS?

As usual, got a laptop but no recovery CD's :(
Got XP 32 installed (my Microsoft contract doesn't provide MCE) but lots of drivers missing. Toshiba driver page only has all drivers for XP MCE, XP 32 only has BIOS update, Bluetooth, HD-DVD firmwares, virtual sound and WI-FI drivers!
So I tought "Vista on it", but as I checked compatibility within XP with Vista DVD I got a "need to update BIOS" (still has 1.40 - 2006/03/10)!
My problem is that BIOS update always returns "This computer is not supported"! Laptop only has one account, so it's not permissions issue, maybe because lots of drivers are missing? Should I update BIOS in safe mode?
What now? Am I stuck with a Qosmio brick? Without LAN controllers to say the least I can't get nothing done! Will XP MCE drivers work on XP 32?
    Any thoughts?

Friend of mine has Qosmio g30-189 (PQG31E) and WLAn card is Intel.
THIS must be the right driver.
Have you tried to install it in the past?

  • Satellite Pro L10: Can't update BIOS

Hello, I've tried (three times) to update my BIOS using the Windows version, however each time I try, it fails and sends a report to Microsoft - does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Hi
Firstly you have to know that if you use wrong BIOS or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the notebook (motherboard)
I have checked the Toshiba page and it seems that at this time the news BIOS release is from 25/04/06 - version 2.6
Please check this BIOS FAQ document:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07
There you will find how to update the BIOS.
According to this document you have to use the traditional BIOS update (BIOS Upgrade Procedure 2).

  • MS-6561 (745 ultra) - can't update BIOS

Hope someone can shed some light on this problem for me.
    Am trying to resurrect a PC with a 745 ultra mainboard (Athlon XP 1800+ Tbred A) and 640MB PC2100 RAM (2 x 512 + 128)
Have stripped the system down to the bare bones....only DVD-RW, graphics card and PCI USB cards attached
Clean installed XP Pro with no issues and updated to SP3 and all other essential updates
Increased FSB from 100 to 133MHz in BIOS, as others have reported on here
Had a number of BSOD crashes with "Page Fault in Non-paged Area" as the stated error, so i tested the RAM using Memtest.  Each individual stick passed at least 7 passes.
Decided that i should check the BIOS as i've had problems in the past that ultimately were solved by simply updating the BIOS
Try as i might, i cannot get a BIOS update to run using the USB key flashing tool kindly provided on this forum.  The BIOS update file from the MSI site is an EXE file, rather than RAR or ZIP, so I extracted the new BIOS file (A6561SMS.170) and pointed the flashing tool at that.  Each time i try i get the error message that the file is "Everythink But" a BIOS file
Interestingly, the forum flashing tool and PC Wizard both list the current BIOS as "AMI  v 07.00T  04/02/01", whereas the POST screen has it as "A6561SMS  V1.4  070502"
    Any ideas?
Oh, the other thing i'm concerned about is the quality of the PSU.  It looks like a pretty cheap one:
    J-L-T  350W  CB (PFC)
    3.3V/20A  5V/30A (185Wmax) 12V/15A  -5V/0.5A  -12V/0.8A (9.6Wmax) +5VSB/2A
Comments on that would be appreciated too
    Thanks in advance
    MarkW.

That's correct mode 1 can works with .rar or .zip only.

I was hoping that someone might be able to comment on the fact that the currently installed BIOS appears to be different depending on where you look at it - either AMI 07.00T or A6561SMS v1.4.  Is this not unusual?

That's suppose to be, ignore it. CPU-Z will tell you the same.
SMBIOS info is different than post screen information typical for ancient mainboards.

I was actually selecting Option 2 with the flashing tool, Stu.  The problem is that the tool tells me that the file that i extracted (A6561SMS.170) from the BIOS archive (EXE) file on the MSI Support site

is not a valid BIOS file.  The same happens if I try other older BIOS updates.  Is there a known issue using the tool for older boards & BIOS?

That's correct Mode 1 expect BIOS archive file[.zip or .rar] and not BIOS file itself, Tool's verification failed and Tool advice to use Mode 2 instead.

Mode 2 Tools verification failed because the BIOS file doesn't match with co-respond flasher and Tool rejected it.
Your ancient board is not supported by Mode 2, because else it will apply the wrong flasher,
to prevent that Tool make verification checking to make sure pointed BIOS file will meet the necessary criteria
I've attached the latest BIOS for your board to meet the Tool's criteria, use Mode 1.
Note: DO NOT FLASH your BIOS if BIOS update is not really need.
DO NOT FLASH if you have stability problems!! That will end with dead board, if something your PC hang/lockup/reboot during BIOS flashing process and you will end with dead mainboard.

  • X-58 pro - Can't update bios

    Hi,
Currently i'm running bios version 7.1 and i want to upgrade to bios version 8.8. This because there were a lot of updates on the CPU micro code.
With MSI live updates it shows me that the latest bios version is 7.3. Why is that when 8.8 is the latest version?
When i try to update my bios through MFlash it doesn't recognize version 8.8
Are the X-58 pro mainboards configured with 2 different types of AMI bios or something?

Are the X-58 pro mainboards configured with 2 different types of AMI bios or something?
Yes.  One has SLI Support and the other one doesn't.  M-Flash and MSI Live Update have a seach filter that will prevent them from flashing BIOS Releases that belong to a different BIOS Series to make cross-flashing impossible (which is a wise thing, as in most other cases, a BIOS from a different series will render a mainboard that expects releases from another series useless.
If you really need to update to an 8.x version, please >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<.

  • Can't update bios Toshiba L750-1N3

I've downloaded bios version 3.40 and I checked if I downloaded right file. I closed all running programs, antivirus isn't even installed. After I ran that bios file (.exe) it required reboot so I clicked "yes". So laptop restarted but after "Windows logo" screen remained black with movable cursor. I waited 15 minutes and nothing changed so I restarted computer. After that Windows booted normally but when I checked bios version it said it's 2.40. So I'm wondering why this update failed and if anything is screwed now with my laptop? I've tried updating it 3 times so far. Thank you, I'll be patient.

Does anyone know a good solution?

I downloaded the 2 latest Bios updates for this model

    and
    1.20 http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/scf6v120.exe
I tried updating both via Windows and I get a Error that the Bios isn't for my Notebook PC.
    Anyone else having this issues?

    Satellite C55-A5105
    Downloads here.
    1. The latest BIOS contains all previous updates.
    2. Is this the one you used?
ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.30 for Satellite C50/C55/C55t (PSCF6x/PSCFEx)
    3. Did you follow the precise instructions?
•For CD-ROM BIOS updates in Windows 8 models: (1) Shut down the system while pressing the SHIFT key to completely power off. (2) Power on while pressing F2 to enter the BIOS Setup menu. (3) Go to the Security tab and set the "Secure Boot" setting to "Disabled". (4) Go to the Advanced tab, enter "System Configuration" and set the Boot Mode to "CSM Boot." (5) Press F10 to save and exit. (6) Boot from the BIOS CD-ROM. (7) Type FLASH at the C:\ prompt then press Enter. (7) After the BIOS update has completed, restore the Boot Mode setting to "UEFI Boot" and the Secure Boot setting to Enabled.
•Note: The BIOS Launcher "CD_ROM Installation" option may not automatically proceed to burn the CD-ROM in Windows 8. If this occurs navigate to the directory named after the BIOS filename in the root directory of the C-Drive (ex. C:\skgjv130), and manually burn the CD-ROM from the disc image (ISO) file.
    4. We need an exact quote of any error message. A snapshot from a digital camera is best.
