Can't Update Genius, No Genius Mixes

Since installing iTunes 9 on Snow Leopard, I can't Update Genius. When I try to, I get the following message:
"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection was lost.
There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."
Anyone know how to fix this?

Ok, I found a solution. You have to delete your Cookies folder from the Finder. Bit annoying though, since once you've done that you have to re-login to all of your favourite websites.

    Hmmm, I bought a 60-GB Ipod Classic at first then it was stolen. The thing is my 2 year warranty didn't kick-in, nether did my car insurance which doesn't cover theft.
    So I had to take the loss and come up with cash for another Ipod but this time it was the 80-GB Classic. Now this one has crashed. So I may try ZUNE this time, are you listening @ APPLE ? I've only had this new one since July 7th- 07.
    So far I've shelled out roughly $930.00 for two APPLE Ipods with the 2 year warranty in approve. 18 months.
    Another thing is that I didn't transfer the warranty to the new Ipod. They don't tell you themselves about the transfer but you have to take the initiative yourself. They never offered to give me the paperwork. There you have it the pitfall of not transferring your warranty. Without that warranty you are left holding the bag. So get that warranty puuuleeeezze.

    You can't say "play similar songs" it will say genius is not available.

    Well, perhaps I misunderstood what you meant about Win 7 compatibility. It works on at least some Win 7 machines. So the question is why isn't it working on yours?
    I wasn't being nosy for no good reason! Since I'm not sitting there, your reply tells me genius is at least turned on since a genius itdb exists. If the file was there but months old, then some other problem might be happening with genius & its mixes. But it seems up-to-date, and you have a good number of tracks.
    My library with 32000 tracks has a genius ITDB file that's 39080KB. It's not quite a 1:1 ratio - but is your genius ITDB a little larger than 1600KB since you have 1600 tracks?
    My extras ITDB is 2808KB. I don't know exactly what that files does. I opened it in WordPad and it seems to be some sort of SQLite database.
    You might look at your library on the XP machine and see if they match as far as size goes.

    Other computers in the same network updated successfully.

  • Match error 50 can't update genius

    I've paid for the Match service, but I'm stuck on the first step.  I get almost all the way through and then get an error message that says:  "Genius results can't be updated right now.  An unknown error occurred (-50)."
    I have searched but can not find a fix for this.  If someone knows the cure for this, I'd be a very grateful fella! 

    I may have figured it out. The problem seemed to be connected to a lack of backup ability on the device (maybe a bad preference file?). I found this line that re-enables the functionality (first close itunes!):
    defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false
    Then re-open itunes and try the update. It hopefully then allows the backup, update, and restore. It was scary as heck during the delete, update, and restore. Everything seems to be here, though.

    On my HP Laptop ( Vista) I can see my Genius mixes but they will not play. Genius is enabled and I have updated it. I can sync my Iphone and they will play fine on that. Any play list I have created works just fine also on both my laptop and Iphone

    I have an 8GB iPhone, and considerably more music in iTunes. For this reason, I have manual management of songs and videos enabled, but it appears that, under iTunes 9, I can't have Genius Mixes (mixes, mind you, not playlists, playlists are fine) on my iPhone. Is there something I'm missing?

    there is a work around. You will have to sync your playlists rather than manage your music manually and at the same time control what tracks go on to your iphone.
    I usually create a playlist in itunes called "iphone" which I use to keep track of music I want to put on my iphone. You can then select all the music in your itunes library and Control-click to bring up the contextual menu then select untick selection. Then go into the "iphone" playlist in itunes (which will have the music you want to put on your iphone, and select all the tracks there then go tick selection. So your iphone music will be ticked and all other music will be unticked. You then select "sync only ticked songs and videos" from the info page in your iphone set-up section, its right above "manually manage music". You then sync the playlists you want: the "iphone" playlist you created and whatever Genius mixes you would like. when you sync, you will have created Genius Mixes on your iphone that are limited to the songs/albums you want to have on your iphone (the ones that are ticked in your itunes library) without the fear of copying the songs that you don't want on there
    Ofcourse, if you then "manage music manually" and apply, you will not erase the music from your iphone but you will lose your genius mixes for some reason. if you want to go back to syncing using playlists, then you sync to that iphone playlist again and your music will not be erased and reloaded again.
    I manage music manually myself and would like to be able to do that and still retain the genius mixes. apple should sort this out! In the past, I have found it to be a good idea to occasionally sync my music using the "iphone" playlist I created and then change to manually manage music and delete the playlist from the iphone in the devices section, which deletes the playlist but keeps the music on your phone. I did this believing that the genius database information would sync properly this way, because genius database info is not linked to tracks you would manage manually and therefore would not update everytime I synced my phone. I also came across some issues with losing album artwork and ratings not updating when I only managed things manually.
    I hope that hasn't been too confusing for you. If you play around with it, you should get the hang of it

  • Keep getting error 4002 when trying to update Genius

    I haven't seen anyone write about getting error 4002 when trying to update genius in itunes. I select update genius and it gathers information and sends it to the itunes store I assume. And then waits a few seconds and then I get the following message "Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error occurred (4002) Please try again later." I've been getting this message for well over a month and I keep hoping they'll be an update or somehow it will magically be fixed, but nothing has changed. Anyone have any insight on this one?
    The current ituned library it 123GB and is stored on external drives. It should also be noted that when I first turned on genius when it was released it went through this whole problem without a hitch. I just can't update Genius with any of the music I've added since then. I can't even get genius to recognize music that I got from the itunes store since I've had the problem.

    Be careful - this was a disaster for me. Once I did this, I got a different error - an error 4010 and in trying to recover, caused a lot of library issues that forced me to go to a backup to fix. You'll find a lot of people having the 4010 problem. Basically iTunes Genius is a disaster and Apple isn't fixing it.

    I don't think you can. I was going to suggest that since you can sync a Genius Mix to a device you might read off the tracks from that, but it turns out the details are hidden there too.
    As I understand it once a Genius Mix has been created it won't be altered, unless you delete a "mix" you don't care for in which case a replacement will be generated.
    To capture the list in iTunes I guess you would have to leave the mix to play all the way through until it loops back on itself, then sort your Music in Last Played order and capture the results to a regular playlist.

    It's pretty simple, meanwhile in iTunes of my Macbook Air (with iTunes Match activated) I can have the genius mixes that I wish, but in the music of my iPad and iPhone (with iTunes Match activated too), only I've got 4 mixes; I do not why and I've really tried everything, I mean, activate, deactivate, synchronize manually, etc. In spite of all I didn't get the genius mixes in my devices. ¿What is it the weirder? It's in the beginning all worked wonderful, I mean, when I activated for first time iTunes Match everything was OK, there wasn't any problem if I sincronized, but suddenly, one day stoped to make its work, ¿Can anybody help me?     Ok, I see. Keep in mind that the Genius mixes in iTunes will not be exactly the same as the Genius mixes on your iOS devices. I don't know why this is, but I suspect it is because they are locally generated. So you simply may not get more than 4 mixes on your devices.
    I think, though, the best trouble shooting step is to disable iTM on the devices, launch the Music app and let the content clear out, then re-enable the service on the devices. See if that gives you any better results.
