Can't update iphone 4s to ios 5.1

trying to update iPhone 4S (currently on 5.0.1) to 5.1.
Keep getting 3194 error right after download is complete and iTunes connects to iTunes store.

3194 is mostly an error that is shown in systems that have ran a jailbreaking tool, and have modified the hosts file.
If you have previously used a jailbreaking tools in your PC such as absinthe and/or tiny umbrella, first you have to get rid of those programs, uninstall itunes, go to \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and delete the hosts umbrella file, and delete from the original host file any address pointing to apple servers (which are fake because tiny umbrella rewrites the file poiting to cydia servers). Install iTunes and this will give you a clean host file that when restoring, the verification process with apple will be pointing you to the right servers allowing you to successfully restore/update your iPhone.
And, if its your case, DON'T jailbreak again! if it isn't, you can anyway give it a try!
Hope it works.

Can't update 4s to iOS 8.0.2, using itunes. iPhone rendered unusable in process, forced to restore to factory settings. Mac is running Yosemite. iTunes says "can't update", at end of process. itunes prompts unknown error (6), with an info button leading to a 404 page. What's going on?

  • Can't update iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 through iTunes or phone itself

I've tried updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 through iTunes(latest update) and all i get is the 'Contacting iPhone software update server' box and then nothing. It just stays on this box with nothing happening for as long you allow it.  I've also tried through other Wi-fi networks with no success either.  I don't have wi-fi at home and can't really go wandering all over the country side looking for free wi-fi to use...
    Any help would be great...

This has happened to me as well. Trying to update either an iPhone 4S or an iPad2, I'm getting the dreaded "waiting for update server" message. 80billion in cash and you can't build data centers to match what Amazon and Facebook seem to have no problem doing?
Here's a new problem. The update to iTunes 10.6 downloaded no problem. But guess what? The latest versions of Pages and iMovie will only run on iOS 5.1 sooo they won't update on your devices. And don't get me started on how Siri was ruined from its original implementation as an independent app into the slow piece of non-understanding junk it has become today.
The update to iOS 5 was a nightmare that failed over and over until I finally had to search through online geek forums - something that I am not supposed to have to resort to with Apple products - in order to find out how to trick my devices into overcoming what essentially amounted to poor quality control before release on that install.
Now I'm going through the same experience. Again. I am reminded of the 90s before Jobs returned. It's clear now that his presence was needed as the final quality controller, and no one exists who can fill that role as of yet. Big doors of opportunity are opening up to people who can get the customer component right, again.

  • Can´t update iphone 3g  from ios 4.2.1. to ios 6

Before I start, yes, I do have the latest version of itunes installed to my pc. I plug  in my iphone, select it and click check for an update and a small window comes by and says: This version of iphone software (4.2.1.) is the current version.  My friends have iphone 3g and they updated to ios 6 with no problem... I´m really desperate because I´ve been trying to solve this problem for months, please help

It's already running the newest iOS version it can; while an iPhone 3G can't be updated to iOS 6, the iPhone 3GS can.

  • Can't update iPhone 4 to ios 5.1

I can't update my iPhone 4 to IOS 5.1.  The message said that "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone 'iPhone".  The network connection could not be established.  I experienced this since 2 days ago until today.
I update the itunes, safari, imac OS X 10.6.8.
The firewall is not blocking any updates.
    Anybody has the same problem?

    Servers are still pretty busy.
I recommend searching google for an iOS 5.1 ipsw for your phone model, then restoring your device by holding down Option when clicking Restore, to select the 5.1 ipsw.

  • "Error -50". Can't update iphone 4 to iOS 5.

I'm trying to update to iOS 5 on my Mac (10.6.8). My iTunes is the most recent version. After iOS 5 dowloaded,  I got a message saying:
"An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (-50). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone?
Continuing will result in loss of all contents on this iPhone"
Heck no I don't want to lose all contents on the iPhone.
If anyone else is experiencing this and has a solution, I'd much appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Travis

I may have figured it out. The problem seemed to be connected to a lack of backup ability on the device (maybe a bad preference file?). I found this line that re-enables the functionality (first close itunes!):
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false
Then re-open itunes and try the update. It hopefully then allows the backup, update, and restore. It was scary as heck during the delete, update, and restore. Everything seems to be here, though.
Good luck. Hope this helps some folks.

And you are - extremely rude, sir or ma'm. I've read other threads you've responded to.
I will move on when I have a fix to this, yet again, messed up update from Apple, 7.0.6
And... for the record - you're not the community God so do us all a favor, step down from your thrown!
Please do not bother replying unless you're one of those that need to have the last word (which is seems to be that way) But if you must have the last word, go ahead & have a nice day!
I think it is rude to jump into a discussion, go off on a tangent, and not add anything of value to the topic of the thread.  That's exactly what you did.
You were already involved in two other threads prior to this.  This thread had nothing to do with your problems with iOS 7.0.6.  The OP dislikes the DESIGN of iOS 7.  He doesn't like the way it LOOKS.
Your comment was completely and totally irrelevant to the topic at hand.  And ckuan's first comment to you was simply that he was happy for you if you prefered Samsung, and that he preferred Apple.
But you didn't leave it at that.  Did you?  Nah. You had to keep going.  You jumped to a conclusion without any supporting evidence.  You base an opinion on these forums?  Fewer than 0.01% of all Apple Users ever visit this forum.  So, to base any opinion about the general user community or their satisfaction with Apple products on this forum, is ridiculous.
Ckuan had a great example, about comparing this forum to a hospital.  Only sick people, or those related to or trying to help sick people, go to a hospital.
Only iPhone users that are having a problem, or those trying to help them, come to this forum.
You don't base your opinion about the health of the entire city by looking at a single hospital.  Not without data to compare.  If 1000 people are sick at the city's hospitals, you'd have to know if the city population was 10,000 or 100,000 or 1,000,000 to make any kind of real judgement.
There are perhaps 10,000 users that have come to these forums.  There are hundreds of millions of iPhone users.  (Generalized guesses, to be sure, but feel free to research opposing data).
10,000 out of 100,000,000 is one out of every TEN THOUSAND USERS.  And just because someone visits this forum doesn't mean they are unhappy.  It just means they are seeking technical advice.
So, since you've added nothing of value to this discussion in this thread, I'm pleased to see that you have chosen not to return.  I think we'll all be happier that way.

  • I updated iphone 5 to ios 8.1 but now there is many problems and i want to turn back to ios 7 . How can i do it?

HI I updated iphone 5 to ios 8.1 but now there is many problems and i want to turn back to ios 7 . How can i do it?

Just restore the iPhone as new
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • Already asked AT&T and Apple Support. Updated iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3, some older Visual Voicemails disappeared. Just noticed today. Not backed up in iTunes. Can I get them back?

New to this site, sorry if I didn't enter my question correctly ... Updated iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3, some older Visual Voicemails disappeared. Just noticed today. Not backed up in iTunes. Can I get them back?

    HALF-SOLUTION!!!! (Restoring only, basically.)
    Restore the phone via iCloud.com
    1. Go to iCloud.com , and log in.
    2. If you want a back up, make sure you back it up to itunes now!
    3. Now back to iCloud.com - select the device you want. Press "Erase iPhone" (or iPad, iPod whatever).
You will go through a few steps. Skip the phone number and leave a message, as it isn't lost. Your phone will be restored. No need for plugging in!
    4. IMPORTANT: Just set it up as usual. Language, country blah. But then you'll get to a step where it says something like "This iPhone was erased with iCloud. Log in with the Apple ID you used to erase it". In this case, my Dad's. So please do that. Later on, the phone will ask for an Apple ID to be used for the phone. I put my own one as I didn't want my dads!!!! Lol....
    5. Plug into iTunes and back-up.
As for updating, I'm still on 7.0.2,,, it ain't working on my phone or itunes!! :(

I am working on a Win 7 Machine and I have disabled all Firewall and Antivirus Tasks as this caused problems on an other update.

Well - I synced before - that was successful - but I am a bit scared to ignore this error and just to continue? You think I should ignore that?

  • I updated iphone 4 to ios 7.1 and the camera doesn't work. what can I do?

i updated iphone 4 to ios 7.1 and the camera doesn't work. what can I do?

First, try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.
If this does not help, and to rule out a software issue, set it up as new device without using the latest backup, in case that backup contains corrupt data.
Is the camera working after that, restore from the backup. Is the camera still not working, this might be a hardware failure and you'll have to get the phone serviced by Apple:

  • I have updated iphone 4 to iOS 6 now itunes 10.7 on windows 7 does not recognize it

Hi I have updated iphone 4 to iOS 6 and also updated itunes to 10.7, now when I connect my device via usb it does not appear in itunes. I have followed all the advice in troubleshooter including uninstalling and reinstalling itunes but it still doesn't appear. Please can anyone help with this? I am not really very tech minded so a simple solution would help!! thankyou

Thank you. I ended up performing the Restore after I did an Update, and performing the restore solved the problem----I now have a functioning iPhone with all of my data, pics, and apps on it. Fortunately I made sure that I backed up my iPhone before I tried to update to iOS6. Man, what a headache though, and it sounds like I had it easy compared to some other horror stories I've read. I won't update my iOS on my iPhone again; i've learned my lesson. It remains to be seen whether iOS6 will be worth it :-)
