Can't update iTunes on iBook G4 (OS10.4.11)

Hallo.  My Mum just gave me her old iPhone 4s.  It doesn't have a 'software update' section under settings/general. I wanted to try to update it somehow using iTunes, but I need to update my IBook G4's iTunes first.  But when I try my laptop just says it can't connect with the server.  However, there's no problem with my internet connection.  What is going on and what should I do?

Without quoting you exact version numbers of everything I can tell you right now it won't be possible.  In order to update the iPhone you will have to be running a version of iTunes that is at least as young as the iPhone and by the time the 4S was out they were well into a version that could not be run under Tiger OS 10.4, even the latest that you will get with Software Update.
I am not sure which versions match up but it may be possible if your iPhone is sufficiently old, and you wanted to go to the expense and trouble of updating your computer to run Leopard OS that you may be able to bridge the gap.  Finding Leopard OS won't be easy but at least the prices have dropped now that it is so old nobody wants it anymore.  It used to run $200 but I think I have seen copies for $50.  Whether or not you can even run it will depend upon the exact specifications of your G4.
All the above said, you might see if you have a friend with a newer computer who could help you upgrade.

  • Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

It's always a good idea to check the requirements before purchasing.
The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

    what should i do?

I was prompted to the newest version 10.6.1, downloaded it and then my computer crashed.  Now I have a corrupted version of 10.6.1 and the website only lists the 10.6.dmg to be downloaded.

  • I can't update iTunes to 12.0.1

    Hello,
I can't update itunes to 12.0.1. When I click "update", it gets loaded from the app store, but doesn't do the update. I tried several times, also after rebooting. The (not working) update is in the list of past updates though: http://cl.ly/image/2x1K2u2A1B2o

  • I can't update itunes to 11.0.4 on windows 7

    I can't update itunes to 11.0.4.
When I try to update a message pops up saying "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". The same thing happened with the last update. I had to uninstall and download the new version.
Every other update has worked on this laptop until then. I've just updated itunes on the other two laptops without any problems.
    Any ideas?

I've tried again but it's still not working. This time a message appears saying iTunes64.msi file not found. Check the file name and try again.

  • Can't update iTunes

Every time I try to install iTunes 10.5 on my macbook pro, it gets almost to the end (blue progress bar moving along then stays at about 90% for a couple of minutes), then my entire computer crashes/shuts down. This has happened three times in a row. What can I do to successfully update iTunes so I can update my iPhone? Thanks!

    1) Nope. I rarely even use QuickTime, unless it's to view a video I took with my digital. So I never really even updated unless the little notice opened up prompting me to do so.
    2) Actually, when I try to uninstall, it's not in the add/remove window, but the uninstall link is in the programs menu. But when I do that, the InstallShield comes up, loads for a few seconds, and then nothing.
Also, when I try to open QuickTime by itself, I get this message:
"Your copy of QuickTime 7.0.2a63, QuickTime Player 7.0.2a63 has expired. Please visit www.apple.com/quicktime/download to download and install a new version."
I can't update iTunes without the latest QuickTime, and I can't download the latest QuickTime without installing iTunes, but it keeps giving me errors. I had circular dilemmas like this. =/

  • HT1222 i can't update itunes - It downloads to the end and then gives me an error message

I can't update itunes - I keep getting a error message after the download is done -any idea what I should do?

    Several things to try.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the Sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut Off. To power up hold the Sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time (for about 10-15 seconds) until the Apple logo appears (ignore the red slider), then let go of the buttons.
Disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.

Which OS X version is your Mac running?
If you have used Software Update on your Mac or tried to update iTunes only direct from iTunes on your Mac and you are notified there isn't an update available, this means your Mac is running an OS X version that is not supported for iTunes 10.7 or later. The current OS X version is 11.0.2.
