Can't update Mac OS X 10.7 to 10.7.1

I have Mac OS X Lion 10.7 on my late 2008 MBP; last night, I downloaded the 10.7.1 update but when it was time to select the disk, I got...
"Mac OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this udate."
What am I missing?

This worked for me: I downloaded a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.7.1 update and, suprise, it was 10MB larger than the old one (83MB vs 72MB).
The new copy worked both on a physical install and in VMWare (needless to say neither worked with the first updater)
PS. 72MB update DMG verified just fine, it was not an incomplete download
PPS. the option-click app store suggestion did NOT work for me

If you're using a PowerMac, you can't. Mac OS X 10.6 and newer require an Intel Mac.

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I can't update mac OS 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 by clicking software update

I cant update mac OS 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 by clicking software update option in my mac drop down list. whenever i tried its reply cant communicate with update server. what can i do for this issue ????

Remember that any MacBook whose model name is "Late 2008" or older cannot run OS 10.10 due to hardware limitations. They are limited to a max OS of 10.7.5
That assumes you have a Macbook and not a MacBook Pro; too often those names get used interchangeably and they are NOT the same computer.
If you are not sure of your model, try entering the serial number in this Apple page:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
It will return a model name such as:
If that does not work (may not for older computers) you can go to this site:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
On that site, you only need enter the LAST three characters of the serial number, the way I recommend as it is not an Apple-oowned site.
Let us know what you find.

  • How can I update Mac 0S X 10.6.8 to 10.7

    How can I update from Mac0S X 10.6.8 to 10.7

    youwin,
you can order Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) from the online Apple store for your country; for example, if you’re in the USA, you can order it from here. Once you’ve received the content code for Lion via e-mail, you’ll be able to download the Lion installer through the Mac App Store, and running the Lion installer will update you from Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8) to Lion.
Note that you can update directly from Snow Leopard to either Lion, Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8), or Mavericks (OS X 10.9); Mavericks is the only one of these three which is gratis.

  • How can I update mac 10.6.8 to Yosemite?

I have never update my macbook mac os and now i have to download the new version of itunes and i cannot open it because i have to update mac os, but i dont know to update mac  os 10.6.8 to Yosemite

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • Can't update Mac OS and Ipad (yes on this forum, pls read)

I know most people are tempted to reply: "Post on the iPad / iTunes forum", but the issue is with Mac OS X 10.6. Here are the 2 issues I am having:
1- Mac OS Updates, from printers to firmware, to itunes , safari updates. Everytime i run software update it fails saying it can't install the downloaded updates (not a lot of info here), but if I manually download the .dmg from apple's site, and run on terminal sudo installer .dmg , it works....
2- Iphone / ipod / ipad updates. They all fail after the 4.2 (or 4.1 for that matter) finishes downloading with can't decompress file (error 1403)
I verified disk, no issues. I verified and fixed permissions. all good now, BUT issue 2 still happens. I don't thing that is a way to manually download 4.2 for the I's, i would try that.
The same devices updated ok to 4.1 on my Mac. The issues are on my mother-in-law's mac (same Macbook version and OS. 10.6.5)

I'm with Kappy on this one - if the manually downloaded combo updater can't be installed by the usual method there's something seriously wrong. Typically the Mac OS doesn't need to be reinstalled if there's a problem - I've found that most problems can be traced to an issue in the user's account so my first step is to see if the problem follows me to another account. So try downloading the combo updater in a new user account and installing it. If that doesn’t work then reinstall the OS.
Just to reiterate Kappy's point, reinstalling the OS won't erase your data or applications. Some programs place their registration information in the root library and will need to have their serial number reapplied. If you own Adobe products I'd recommend that you deactivate them first. However, I just did this myself on my work desktop and forgot to deactivate Photoshop CS5 and even it worked as soon as the Mac rebooted into its new clean OS.

  • HT4140 How can I update Mac OS X 10.5.8 into Mac OS X 10.6?

I have the software Mac OS X 10.5.8 right now but I need to update into a Mac OS X 10.6 in order to get the Mountain Lion... But I can't seem to be able to do it... Help?

If u have another mac and its 10.6.8 or higher u can do it easily
Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store (or use your up-to-date redemption code), and when the download is finished, the Mountain Lion installer will load. Quit the installer (press Command-Q) and go to the Application folder on your system.
Locate and right-click the Mountain Lion installer to show its contents (click for larger view).(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)If you have already installed Mountain Lion, the installer will have been automatically deleted from your system. In this case, you can go to the Purchases section of the App Store and redownload the installer.
Right-click the "Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion" application in the Applications folder, and choose "Show package contents."
In the new window that opens, go to the Contents > SharedSupport folder and locate the file called "InstallESD.dmg."
Open Disk Utility (in the Applications > Utilities folder) and drag the InstallESD.dmg image to the device sidebar, where it should appear under your various disk and volumes listings.
In Disk Utility select the InstallESD.dmg file, and then you can click the Burn icon in Disk Utility's toolbar to burn the image to a DVD (single-layer 4.7GB discs do not have enough space, so use dual-layer 8.5GB discs). If you wish to create a USB or FireWire install drive instead, then continue on to step 6.
Connect a spare USB or FireWire drive that has at least 6GB of capacity, which should show up in Disk Utility. Optionally partition it by selecting it and using the Partition tab to split it into two logical volumes (one for the Mountain Lion installer and the other for extra storage space) by clicking the plus button to create a new partition, and then setting the first partition to be 4.8GB in size.
Drag the destination drive to the Destination field, and drag the InstallESD.dmg image to the Source field.(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)Select the InstallESD.dmg file in Disk Utility and click the Restore tab that appears in the main Disk Utility window. When you do this you should see the disk image appear in the Source field, but if not then drag it there.
Drag your destination drive (the desired USB or FireWire drive volume) to the Destination field, and then click the Restore button. Confirm you would like to do this, and when complete you should have a fully bootable Mountain Lion installation drive.
This process should work as described but the restoration process could fail with an error. You can overcome this by first mounting the InstallESD.dmg file and then using the mounted volume as the Source for the restoration, instead of the disk image file itself. If restoring the InstallESD.dmg file directly does not work, then first mount it and restore the "Mac OS X Install ESD" volume that appears (click for larger view).(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)
To do this, first select the InstallESD.dmg file in the Disk Utility sidebar and click the Open button in the Disk Utility toolbar. When mounted, you will see a volume name appear called "Mac OS X Install ESD" underneath the image file. In the Restore tab in Disk Utility, drag this new volume to the Source field, and then repeat step 8 above to restore it to your drive of choice (special thanks to MacFixIt reader Michael A. for this tip).
When Disk Utility creates the drive in this manner, all files on it will be erased and replaced with the restored data; however, if you initially partitioned the drive (see step 6 above), then you can still use the drive's secondary volume for other purposes in addition to being a Mountain Lion install source.

  • I can't update mac os x from 10.6.4. During installation a window pops up that says: "error occurred during installation" I also cannot update iTunes

cannot update itunes or mac os x. I don't know why. Help?

Did you attempt to update with Software Update? Try this instead: download the combo updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
Once downloaded, unplug all peripherals except keyboard and mouse
    Verify disk as outlined previously
    install update
repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)
    restart Mac
    run Software Update
if there are many updates available, install a few at a time
    repair permissions after the install
    restart Mac

  • Can't update MAC filtering in ServerAdmin/NetBoot at the Image level

    Strange business here.
I have one NetBoot image, set as Default. It's enabled and diskless. Clients can NetBoot to it just fine - no problem. It's great.
I have two NetInstall images, created successfully with the System Image Util. They're both enabled... but no matter what I do, clients don't see 'em and won't install from 'em.
I think it has to do with filters at the Image level, but I'm not sure:
On the NetBoot image - the one that works fine - the image filters are set to (model filter) "Allow Any Apple Computer" and (Mac Address) "Allow only clients listed below (deny others)." Thing is, nothing is listed under MAC address filtering... so WHY is this working for the clients? and why are the NetInstall images not working? They have the same Image-level filters in place.
In fact, on the Image filter pane, no matter what I change, the changes aren't saved - when I click "OK," then go back into the pane, it's blank again.
Everything's on the same subnet; there's no funky networking going on or anything like that. NetInstalls work(ed) fine from my Tiger server. Note that my DHCP resides on a separate Windows server. Since I've been able to NetBoot and NetInstall from my 10.4 machine, I'm not inclined to think the DHCP is at fault here.
Oh - and one other tasty tidbit: in the Log files I see "can't open /etc/bootptab". This isn't entirely surprising since I went to /etc and there isn't a file or directory there by that name...

Per image MAC address filtering, sadly, does not work. Although I don't believe it will interfere with anything, you're probably best off just leaving that action out of your workflow.
Server level filtering works fine. If you need MAC address filtering, you'll have to do it there.
One quick thing you can try... toggle something on the image (enabled state for instance) and click "save". This may reset bootpd if it has cached old data.

  • Can't update MAC OS X

I have a macbook pro and it is version 10.7.5. I know that the latest version is 10.8.2 right now and that is probably why my laptop keeps telling me that because of an error, it is going to restart. So, the problem is when I go to software update, it says that my laptop is already updated and there are no other updates. So, how to i upgrade my laptop to 10.8.2, without buying mountain lion (again, cuz I already have mountain lion)?

If you now have 10.7.5 installed, then upgrading requires purchasing Mountain Lion from the App Store. If you have already done so but not installed it, then the installer is in your Applications folder.
Apparently you have a problem with your system software. Before you attempt to install Mountain Lion you need to fix the existing issues. You might start with:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
