Can't update my iPad and now stuck on connect to iTunes screen

My iPad 2 stopped half way through updating today and now is stuck on the connect to iTunes screen. I connected it to my computer, started the restore process, downloaded the update and then I got an error and it went back to the start again! I thought, "ok I'll just go find the file that was downloaded and retry installing it" only to discover that iTunes had deleted the 1.5 GB update it had just downloaded (it took my 2 hours and to top it off I have to pay extra for anything over 500MB I use per day...) Is there any other way to install this update or reset my iPad to factory settings without having to update it?

That screen means it has entered recovery mode and you can only restore by using the recovery mode instructions to connect to iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 and summarized as:

  • Ipad 2 3G stuck on "Connect to iTunes screen"

    Yesterday I updated my iPad 2 3G to 4.3.3 from 4.3.2.
iTunes gave me a error (9) and my iPad is now stuck on the "Connect to iTunes screen".
I tried it on multiple pc's everywhere i get error (9). Also tried multiple cables which just does the same.
Also i tried to reset it by holding the Sleep and Home button. Wich gives me an apple loge for a few seconds and then returns to the "Connect to iTunes screen".
Can anyone help me? I'm really freaking out here I just got it.

If you're seeing an image similar to the one below that indicates that you're iPad needs to be connected to iTunes on your computer in order to be restored.  After restoring it, set it up as a new device, then disconnect it from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Conent and Settings, go through the setup screens on the iPad and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts.  Be sure it's connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup.

  • ITunes not recognizing my iphone 4 and is stuck on connect to itunes screen.. Even apple store cannot fix it.. any help?

I tried Erasing all contents and settings.
And after that it asked to connect to itunes for restoring. BUt iTunes never recognized the iphone and i am stuck on this screen

Ignore sandeep.  Don't use DFU mode.  You need to use recovery mode.

Placing your device into recovery mode
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
Use iTunes to restore the device.

  • I phone update failed and now stuck on connect to itunes but it wont connec

I have the latest version of Itunes. I clicked update iphone to some .1 version of software and it was unsucessful. Now my iphone will only show the screen that says I need to connect to Itunes(the one with the cord with the arrow pointing to the itunes logo). I have reset the iphone. Nothing is working and I cant call for help.

    This worked!
Nothing worked until i finally went to 8.1.10 FIRST. I had this same problem last week, updating a customer’s 3G to 3.0 from 2.2.1, on a MAC (using iTunes 8.2.1)! I tried on 2 different macs, 2 different sync cables, a bootcamp Vista SP1 on my MBpro and then XP pro SP3. All registered a 1602, 14 or 16 error everytime, about halfway through the update on the iPhone. I also tried removing the old 3.0 update and prefs file from the user data > app > apple directories with no luck. Also tried reinstalling itunes on the Mac.
    What finally worked was:
uninstall itunes (if you have anything above 8.1.10).
move your itunes library file (for windows, it’s located under the iTunes directory, usually called iTunes Library.itl). You want iTunes to create a blank file since your 8.2.1 upgraded itl file won’t work with 8.1.10.
put your ipod into DFU mode
restore your iPhone to 2.2.1 using iTunes 8.1.10 (go here to download older versions of iTunes)
use the same site above to download 8.2.0 (not 8.2.1).
install 8.2.0 and connect your iPhone. It will notify you about the update. Download & install the 3.0 update (if you uninstalled, the 3.0 update should be deleted).
    upgrade back to 8.2.1
move your library (itl) file back. To be safe, I would hold the shift key down to select your 8.2.1 file (even if it’s named the same as the one you created from iTunes 8.1.10).
1 hour later, I have everything updated. All I can say is that there’s a bug in 8.2.1 that wasn’t there in 8.2.0. I updated my iPod Touch first gen no problem with 8.1. Hope it works for others.

  • HT201263 Iphone 4 won't restore on Itunes and is stuck in connect to Itunes screen

My phone updated on its own. I didn't want the new i 0S 7 because I have an Iphone 4. Somehow my phone when i wasn't on it went to a black screen with the apple logo and a progress bar. I restarted it, connected it to itunes, and it won't restore because my phone is rejecting the update.

Take it to an Apple authorized repair center or Apple Store Genius Bar. The home button defect is NOT a software problem.

  • IPad stuck on "Connect to iTunes" screen after iOS 8.0.2 Update

Attempted to update to iOS 8.0.2 last night on my 4th Gen iPad. After verifying the download, the iPad instructed me to "Connect to iTunes". Once connected, iTunes stated that my iPad was in need of a restore, which I attempted to do so. Upon "extracting software" iTunes states that it cannot recognize my device and fails the restore. My iPad is still stuck on "Connect to iTunes" screen.
    So far I've:
Attempted restore on iTunes 3 times
Attempted hard restart (reboot) by holding home button and top button down for ten seconds.
Don't know what else to do, Please Help!!!!

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.

    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • IPhone 4 Stuck on 'Connect to iTunes' screen.

I.. was kinda trying to get rid of the iOS 7 update files which were automatically downloaded to my iPhones following this discussion page: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5379403?start=0&tstart=0
Following the instructions posted there, I managed to get rid of about 3GBs of the iOS 7 files out of my iPhone 5.
    What I followed was nzzzzz's 'Method B'
Method B: Open Settings->General->Software Update, Click "Install Now". There will be a prompt says "Verifying update...", Wait until this prompt disappear, there will be a spinning wheel on the black background. Immediately press and hold both of the power and home buttons at the same time. DO NOT release the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds. Your device will reboot. It's done. The automatically downloaded firmware will have been deleted. Now read part 1 to prevent automatically downloading in the future.
However, when I tried it again on my iPhone 4, it's now stuck on 'Connect to iTunes' screen.
No DFU modes or recovery modes seemed to be working, so I gave up and decided to restore & upgrade to iOS 7.
Then there was another problem, iTunes 'did' recognize the device as in 'recovery mode', downloaded the 7.0.3 update file, and tried to restore the device... but it got me 'error 9134'.
I followed the instructions on forums and discussion pages, and even called the Apple Care Services for technical support... but nothing worked. Nothing.
All those 'hosts' file edit and iTunes removal(and other following services) + download/install to the latest iTunes did not work on me, and now the device is 'just stuck on Connect to iTunes' screen.
    Any suggestions..?
(BTW, English is not my native language, so if there's anything that cannot be understood, tell me)
    + Thanks in advance

Windows 7, iTunes v 11.0.4.4 (The computer that successfully factory-resetted my old iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. The same computer that's not working with the same iPhone 4 now.)
Plus, my iPhone 4 is not backed up... not even in iCloud I think... There are some old pictures I'd like to keep, but almost forgot to get them out since I bought 5 a few weeks ago. I was using the iPhone 4 for the TV cable with the 30-pin connector.

Hi, I solved this problem on my iPad.
First I followed the steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4097?viewlocale=en_US  and recovered the iPad. iPad turns empty like new.
Then I followed the steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US (Option: Restoring your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) and restored my iPad from a previous backup from iTunes.
When the backup restore was finished, many apps were missing on my iPad. I synchronized it again with iTunes (it took a while although I don't have many apps) and everything was back exactly as before.
I don't know what caused the problem in the first place, being stuck in the iTunes USB screen, but it seems to be solved now. I will anyway try to always remember to close all apps and not leave them running in background. Maybe my iPad got confused?
    Regards
    Sonja
