Can't update my iphone 4 to iOS, says check network settings

Been trying to update for a couple of weeks, I have tried everything I know to do. HELP!

I attempted to update my iPhone 4 from ioS 5 to ioS 6 from iTunes on my laptop using Windows 7 OS, I had downloaded the new ioS 6 and started the update on the iPhone 4 and everything was going routine until the phone had been going thought what I though was the update process when an error window opened up and said that an error had occured and the iPhone 4 could not be updated. I have never had a problem like this before and it caught me off guard and I did not note all the information in the error window, but it did not appear to indicate anything other than that I would have to abort the update and did not think it would be that big of a problem. However I could not get iTunes to recognize the iPhone 4 after this and still cannot after rebooting the laptop a few times and also trying to reset the phone a few times as well. The iPhone 4 just has the image of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an icon for iTunes. I have tried to get iTunes to recognize the iPhone, but cannot accomplish it to do anything else with the phone. It seems like the phone is in a state of where it does not have enough software loaded to do anything or I don’t know how to get it to. Any suggestions how I can get my iPhone 4 back into service. Note: iTunes still recognizes my iPad and iPods, so iTunes seems to be okay to me.

If you have iPhone 3G, the latest and greatest is IOS 4.2.1.
If you have iPhone 3GS or later, you can only update to IOS 6.0.1.
For iPhone 5 and iPad mini, you can update to IOS 6.0.2.

Still very confusing... do you want to know HOW to update? If so, iOS 5.1 is no longer available, you can only download the latest 5.1.1. To do so, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install.

I was able to update my iPhone 4S to 6.1.1, BUT :: I could not update to 6.1.1. from my iPhone. I received the same message as everyone else saying that my iPhone was not connected to the Internet, which is was. (I was able to access my mail etc. via Internet.)
Instead I connected my iPhone to my computer via ITunes via the cable. I then downloaded the software on my computer and updated the iPhone from the computer. While I was downloading the software on to my computer, which is only connected to the Internet via ethernet, the same message as above appeared on my iPhone about not being connected to the Internet. I pressed cancel. The software continured to download on to the computer and then on the iPhone.

Correct. You can either leave the device with its existing version, or update it straight to 8.0.2, but can't update it to any intermediate version.

Go to Settings/General/Software Update while connected to power and a WiFi network. The update takes about 5 minutes.
For safety be sure you have a current iCloud backup. 99% chance you won't need it, but it's best to be safe.
There is also a very small chance that something will go wrong. It never has for me, but I do see posts from people who have had the update fail. I think the chances are very small if you have power and a good Internet connection, but if the update fails you will need a computer to recover the phone.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."

How come I can't update my iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 9B208 instead of iOS 6?

My iPhone recently bricked for some reason (I'm not sure why, it just hangs on the Apple logo when starting up), and I don't want to update it to iOS 6. I know for a fact my iPhone is GSM model, and I found the 5.1.1 OFW using Google, both just a "5.1.1" ipsw and a "5.1.1 9B208" ipsw. When I try to restore my phone with either of these ipsws by alt-clicking "restore," I get the error "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."
This is a different message than I get when I try to restore with an ipsw meant for an iPhone 4s, or other phone.
Is there a reason I cannot restore from this ipsw? And if there is, where can I find and ipsw for 5.1.1 that I can restore with?

Apple has stopped signing iOS 5. You will need to update to iOS 6.
