Can't update or access itunes

I received an upgrade notification and told it to download and install, but I didn't reboot my machine until later. When it came back up, and I tried to open itunes, this error popped up - "This action is only valid for products that are installed." I rebooted again and got the same thing. Can I download iTunes and install it and not lose my music files? i have tried to install the latest version but it can't uninstall the old one so I'm stuck not being able to open or reinstall itunes, what can i do to resolve this?

Hello haylz_mcg,
It looks to me like you're dealing with two issues at this point. Regarding the "action is only valid for products that are installed, it is the shortcut you're clicking on that needs to be removed.
Before attempting to reinstall iTunes, delete the shortcut from your desktop (and from the systray if applicable).
The specific message you're getting when you try to uninstall iTunes would have been helpful, but chances are it's the Apple Software Update program that's preventing iTunes from successfully uninstalling.
Repair the Apple Software Update program as follows:
Open Control Panel(s) from your Start Menu
Select Add/Remove Programs
Select Apple Software Update
Click on "Change"
Select Repair.
This should repair the Apple Software Update to a condition where it can be successfully removed when you install the latest version of iTunes.
When you download iTunes, I suggest choosing "Save" instead of "Run" and save the installer to your Desktop and run it from there.
If you still have difficulty getting the installer to run, then try following the steps in this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
As long as you don't uncheck the "Add iTunes and QuickTime shortcuts to my Desktop" option in the iTunes installer, you should have a new shortcut that opens iTunes once again.

  • Can I update iOs using itunes without internet connection?

I am using an ipad mini 2, second generation. I plugged it in to itunes and there was an update avaible for ios 8. Can I update iOs using itunes without internet connection? Thank you

iTunes needs an internet connection to download the update if it has not already. Then it needs to verify the update with Apple servers prior to installation.
So in short, no, you do need at least some form of internet access to update.

I read the responses about downloading the windows installer cleanup utility, but that is no longer available on microsoft's website.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

My ipod touch 4g doesn't show option for ios update in setting-general page. Can i update it via itunes by connecting it to computer?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode ue one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Yeah, I've seen this topic:

    Thanks.

    Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command (on one line) and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command (on one line) and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your target drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
In some cases (perhaps depending on what builds of iTunes were installed in the past) it seems the folder is in the \Local\ branch of AppData rather than \Roaming\ in which case edit to suit.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library.
If your iTunes library is on the C:\ drive with the media folder held elsewhere then see also make a split library portable.

I can't no longer access Itunes.  Keep getting error message 127.  I tried uninstalling Itunes, but can't.  So frustrated.  Please help.

First, if you've moved the iPhoto library to an external drive, make sure that drive is mounted by opening it in the Finder.
The issue can be caused by sharing the photo library on a network (against Apple's advice) or by opening it in more than one local user account at the same time. You may be able to clear the error by logging out or restarting the computer. If not, do as follows.
Quit iPhoto if it's running, locally or on any file-sharing client. Select the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Usually it's in the Pictures folder, but you may have moved it somewhere else. Right-click or control-click the library icon and select
              Show Package Contents
from the popup menu. In the folder that opens, navigate to
    Database/apdb/lockfile.pid
and move that file, if it exists, to the Trash. Close the Finder window.

Where can I download the iTunes64.msi driver. I can't update my current Itunes without this driver. I can't find it on Microsoft's website or Apple's website.

You can't download the individual .msi files, but they can be extracted from the setup.exe files if required.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)

  • Can't Update or Delete Itunes 10.1.0.54

For some reason I can't update Itunes 10.1.0.54 to the latest version.  I get an error that says:
       Could not open key:
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.mpg\OpenWithProgIds
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel
I get the same error if I try to uninstall Itunes.  I have seen some similar posts here but none of them seem to help.  I'm gathering that there is a registry error but I'm not sure of what I'm supposed to look for.  I've used regedit to navigate to:
    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.mpg\OpenWithProgIds
Now I'm not sure what I'm looking for.  It looks like I have full permission for the key.  There are 2 entries.  The first is named (Default) which is of type REG_SZ with Data of (value not set).  The second is named QuickTime.mpg of type REG_NONE and Data of (zero-length binary value).  If anyone has a clue what to do I would be very appreciative.  Thanks in advance.

    That is weird.
I think we'd better try to get the malware possibilities off the table with this one now. (Unusually old-fashioned sorts of errors associated with other weirdnesses get me a bit worried about that sort of thing.)
Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)

Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.

  • Can't update ipod in itunes

My ipod doesn't update in itunes. When i try updating it, the message "Songs on the ipod (said ipod) cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist". When i try to manually manage the songs on my ipod, i put the entire library (it fits) onto the ipod, but the ipod erases itself. I have the latest version of itunes and ipod updater.

Now I have the most recent version of itunes, and I still can't update my ipod, and when I try manually managing the songs in itunes, i i have to drag the whole library over to the ipod icon. It looks like its actually doing something for a second, but after a little while all the songs just disappear from the ipod (not in itunes)

  • Can't update iPhone with iTunes

    Hi everyone,
I've recently downloaded the most recent update for the iPhone 3GS and tried to install it today. Every time I try to update the phone, the message "The iPhone "Sian's iPhone" could not be updated. This device isn't eligible for the requested build" appears. (See below)
My iPhone isn't jailbroken, my iTunes software is up-to-date (10.2.2) and my laptop's software is up-to-date (Mac OS X 10.6.7).
I've never had this problem before... Sometimes when I plug my phone into the wall or in the laptop it says "Charging is not supported with this accessory" even though I'm using genuine Apple accessories, etc. I'm not sure if this helps you determine the issue.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me update my iPhone!

Here's what is mentioned for your error in the updated version (June 22nd) of iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
Don't forget to update iTunes, the newest version is 10.3.1 Maybe a different USB cable is also worth a try.
This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an error 3194. If you receive this error, update to the latest version of iTunes. If you do have the latest version of iTunes, this can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new IPSW. 3rd party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue, to resolve please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see  iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod; follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store.

  • Can't update apps with iTunes

    Hi!
iTunes shows me that there are 4 updates for apps (for the iPhone/iPod Touch) available but everytime I click the "x Updates available"-message iTunes does something online and shows then the message:
We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (5002).
There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.
I have this problem since I installed iTunes 8. The count for the available updates increases and I can buy apps through the Appstore in iTunes and can also buy music.
I restarted iTunes and my computer, nothing helped.
    Any ideas?
