Can't update past v 3.6.13 (OS X)

I'm running Mac OS X (10.4.11) and currently have Firefox 3.6.13. I can't upgrade to Firefox 4 since I'd need to update my OS, so I'd like to just upgrade my current version of Firefox to 3.6.17. However, Firefox won't let me. When I go to "Help" and "Check for Updates..." I receive an error message that informs me that "A recommended security and stability upgrade is available, but you do not have the system permissions required to install it. Please contact your system administrator, or try again from an account that has permission to install software on this computer." My login IS the administrator login on my computer, and there is no other login. Am I going to have to try to access as SU just to update this damn program? Any help is greatly appreciated. (Note: For several weeks now, Firefox prompts me every once and a while that there's an update for 3.6 available and asks if I want to download it. When I press ok, it just displays a progress bar that never does anything and stays open until I close it down. No error, no download, no nothing. It was only when I went to manually check for updates that I received this error message.)

Thanks for your answer.
Like you wrote, I downloaded OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) . But it is not installing even though there is enough space.

  • G3 imac can't update past 10.4.6 "errors found during update"

I'm issues with a slot-loading g3 imac updating past 10.4.6 (the version i installed from the dvd). the boot rom number is 4.9.f1. I tried to format after the first incident to no avail. It runs pretty good as is but I need to get Ilife 08 on it(which claims to need 10.4.10 i believe). The first go at this I ran software update, it updated everything but the 10.4.11 combined, which rendered my Itunes unusable because it needs 10.4.9 or later. I even went as far as just downloading the 10.4.7 combined update with the same outcome. Instalation on the os x update runs normal and the just stops, saying there were errors found try updating again.
    Please help!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

A G3 won't see more than 128 GB of a drive. You can put in a larger drive but the computer won't see anything beyond the first 128GB, not even if you partition. I know with G4s you can put in ATA PCI cards which will allow you to use bigger drives, and there's a utility called [SpeedTools|http://www.speedtools2.com> which is a software solution (read carefully before using as there are drawbacks vs. hardware).
A hard drive is one place where I am hesitant about buying used, especially if it is one that is the same vintage as your computer with who knows how many hours on it. I am saying this because I don't think if you buy new that you will find anything less than 7200, 8MB, 160 GB, etc. I also see people asking $30 for used 120GB drives, and you can get a new 160GB drive for not much more if you hunt around and fill out your rebate coupons.
You can get a bigger drive, use the first 128 GB with this computer, then when you get a new computer move the drive into it and use the whole thing (assuming you get a computer that supports big drives as just about any computer made in the past 4 years will do).
Personally I like Seagate drives, but you'll get all kinds of responses on this.
Since this is moving more into the hardware realm you might consider reposting the issue in the imac and/or G3 forum.
Oh, one more thing, I wouldn't necessarily kiss the drive goodbye. If you have given up on directory repair why not try reformatting it with the erase option (to do a scan for bad blocks) and see if it still has some life left in it? I am still running two 120GB drives in this computer, at least one of which is 5 years old.

  • Can't update past 10.5

I am have trouble updating my son's mid 2007 iMac past 10.5 installed from the retail Leopard disc after a series of crashes and hangs starting last week.
at first i thought it was due to disk errors such as 'invalid node structure', but after running Diskwarrior, it rebuilt my directory and my disk gives me no errors. i have tried installing from software update, stand alone combos, 10.5.1, 10.5.3, 10.5.6. all give me different problems. stuck at grey screen, with apple and progress wheel, without apple and wheel, apple no wheel, circle with line though it, bsod...i have seen it all.
btw leopard 10.5 runs smooth and fast and 10.5.6 did run smooth and fast. tried zapping pram, safe boot, repair permissions, etc.
    any ideas?

Have you booted from the restore disk using Disk Utility? If not... it's worth a try. Even if you've used DiskWarrior... make sure there aren't any errors on the boot disk.
Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Are you certain his iMac meets the minimum requirements for Leopard? Check here:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
If you haven't tried it, run the Apple Hardware Test from the restore disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Is there sufficient disk space? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.

  • Can't update past 10.5.8

    Hello.
I'm running a 2009 17" MacBook Pro on 10.5.8. I would like to upgrade my software in order to have features such as the App Store.  However, running the Software Update finds no updates available.  I can't find any software updates online that aren't only available in App store.  It's like a cycle where whenever I go to download a software update, it tells me I have to download the app store first, and when I go to download the app store, it tells me I have to download the software update first.
    Thanks.

I'm trying to update my iPhone 3G from 4.2.1 to iOS5. When I plug in the iPhone it says your software is up to date. I've tried restoring it and no joy. Any ideas?

Well... If you paid any atention to anything that has been circulating for the past few months, you would know that the iPhone 3G is no longer supported by Apple. You can't update past iOS 4.2.1. Sorry.

    - If you have a 1G ipod you can't update past 3.1.3.  To identify yourd see:
    Identifying iPod models
    - Be aware that if you can/do update the iOS to the latest (4.2.1 for a 2G and 4.3.4 for a 3G) you may not be able to sync to the old computer since that computer will need the latest iTunes to see/sync with the update iPod.  Yo need an Max with at least OSX 10.5.8.
You can transfer iTunes purchases from the iPod to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
You can use on of the third-party programs dicussed here to transfer other stuff:
    new PC: Apple Support Communities
Unless you can move/copy the iPod backup file to the new computer you will loose all app data and restore from that backup. That file is located:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

I have always paid for apps with a credit card and now need to use an app store card but I can't get past the point where it keeps wanting my credit card updated.  And can't used the app card number.  Any advice???

I do NOT like using my credit card if I don't have to, and I went out of my way to go buy an Apple gift card, which I successfully redeemed into my Apple account. However, when I use the Apple "Cards" app, it will not let me use anything other than my credit card. I tried purchasing a card, hopefulling it would come out of my Apple store balance, but no such luck -- it came out of my credit card.

My newly updated iPad 2 wants an email for the apple ID.  My apple ID is not an email address.  How can I get past the set-up screen?
I can't change my Apple ID.  It would mess all my stuff up.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
