Can't update QuickTime - 1402 on HKEY_LOCAL... \QuickTimePreferences

I need to update QuickTime and Itunes but keep getting an error on installing the QuickTime 7 "1402 error: could not open key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePreferences.
I've tried to use REGEDIT to edit the permissions on the quicktime keys but that doesn't work. I get a message telling me I can't open the key or change permissions. Also, all user accounts on this PC are setup as administrator and I've tried to edit these keys from multiple accounts. All attempts generate the same error.
Also, if I just go to the Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs and try to remove Quicktime, I get the same 1402 error, followed by a 1603 error.
I've already spent 3 evenings on this. I've read the advice, but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Now I have to get this fixed. My old IPOD died and the new one won't run on the older version of Itunes.
Pls help.

That sounds like there's a problem with the access control lists on those keys.
Somewhat experimental advice in this context (I usually give it in cases where there's a recalcitrant 1402-like problem with CLSID keys on a QuickTime install) ... but it may be worth trying the procedure from the following weblog:
Aaron Stebner's WebLog: Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions
(I've seen it fix permissions before in cases where the permissions couldn't be touched using regedit, which is why I'm thinking it may be worth a crack with your problem.)

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Can't update quicktime or java I have snow leopard

I have a mac mini intel box with snow leopard (used to be leopard). I recently changed from opera to firefox and the plug in checker is complaining about having a outdated version of quicktime and java. I did software update and it says no new software available. I have quicktime 7.5 I guess-whatever came with the lion os update cd disc. Going to sun for java I find they don't support anything older than lion. Must I now buy lion just to stay secure ?. I can't afford a new mac. And don't want to have to rebuy all my programmes again and lose my files. Maybe lion will let me keep my programmes and files like snow leopard did.
Is the plug in checker just being incorrect? I disabled java for the time being. But I can't remove quicktime. I use it a lot.  I have a intel core 2 duo processor and 1.5 gig of ram. I guess I could up it to 4 gig if I had to "upgrade" os yet again. There's nothing that really interests me in Lion or Mavericks but I don't want security issues--I'll just try to disable the silly gingerbread in the new os's if possible. I don't use social media, or stream to a tv or media box.  And I'm to poor to own a smart phone or ipod or ipad. My computer is my tv. I don't want my internet connection to slow down due to stuff I never use connecting to the internet in the background.

You would need to upgrade OS X:
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Can't Update QuickTime and iPhoto

When attempting to download and install the latest version of QuickTime and iPhoto via Software Update, I got the error message, "None of the checked updates could be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges." I have two User Accounts on this Mac, both are Admin accounts, and I've tried updating from both accounts. I've repaired privileges via Disk Utility. Why can't I download these updates?

Same issue with the QT 7.3 update, I get this message...
The update “QuickTime” can’t be saved.
You do not have appropriate access privileges.
The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.
Tried repairing permissions with disk utility, it ran with a few warnings and 3 unexpected ACLs on the private/var/root dirs, but that did not help.
Had keychain problems when I did the Leopard upgrade, had to reset the root password to fix. Wondering if the problematic Leopard upgrade did some other damage?

  • So now I own Quicktime Pro, I can never update Quicktime?

I decided to buy Quicktime Pro last month. Then this morning I am notified that a Quicktime update was available. As I begin installing it I am warned that I will lose Quicktime Pro should I proceed and will have to purchase it again!
WHAT!? This is ridiculous. After PAYING for Quicktime Pro I am now unable to update Quicktime without losing Quicktime Pro. Please tell me I have this wrong.
Is this how paying customers are treated? I would never use pirate software, but things like this almost makes you understand why some people do.
      Windows XP Pro

In the installation warning it says:
"IMPORTANT NOTICE TO QUICKTIME PRO USERS:
INSTALLATION OF QUICKTIME 7 WILL DISABLE THE QUICKTIME PRO FUNCTIONALITY IN PRIOR VERSIONS OF QUICKTIME. IF YOU PROCEED WITH THIS INSTALLATION, YOU MUST PURCHASE A NEW QUICKTIME 7 PRO KEY TO REGAIN QUICKTIME PRO FUNCTIONALITY. AFTER INSTALLATION, VISIT www.apple.com/quicktime TO PURCHASE A QUICKTIME 7 PRO KEY."
If I update Quicktime, surely that makes whatever I had before a 'prior version' of Quicktime. I have Quicktime 7.1.6. If I update to Quicktime 7.2, in my understanding of English, anything below 7.2 then becomes a 'prior version'.
I was going to try email someone at Apple for clarification, but they make it impossible to find anyone to email on their site.
Thanks for the reply Dick Napoli, but can I get a 2nd and 3rd opinion as to what will happen to my Quicktime Pro if I upgrade? I really don't want to waste my money.

  • Can't update Quicktime to 7.5

I have just reloaded OSX (7.5.8) on an old MacBook
When I try to open iTunes 10.5.1 I get a message saying it requires Quicktime 7.5 or better. The machine has QT 7.4.
I can't update QT through Software Update.  If I try to download QT I get a message saying QT is included with OSX.
As it is, I can't run iTunes at all.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ian

QuickTime 7.5 is outdated anyway. The current QuickTime 7.7 is supported under Leopard, updated August 2011.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl761
If you cannot download it from Software Update, use the standalone installer:
    (direct download: http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL761/en_US/QuickTime770_Leopard.dmg)

  • Can't update quicktime, so I can't upgrade to pro

Here's the error I get as soon as I click 'update.'
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Help?

+Yes it still occurs after creating a new account. My original account has full rights offered. I also found out that if I change the video setting within 'Quicktime-preferences' the update feature will work when using both the help button or edit-preferences after re-starting Quicktime. If I switch it back to Directx then re-start Quicktime it gives error using both the help tab or edit-preferences tab when trying to update. I'm thinking it's related between both Quicktime and DirectX.+
Not a preferences thing then ... I'm coming around to the position that it is a video drivers thing.
At least one person is reporting in the following thread (ignore my early contributions ... a mistake in the first report of the error message had me going off down a blind alley), that if they rollback to an earlier version of the nVidia video driver, they got past this crash using "Help > Update ..." or the Update tab. I now notice properly that you've got an nVidia video card.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6296336#6296336
Checking something about your getting past the crash:
+if I change the video setting within 'Quicktime-preferences' the update feature will work when using both the help button or edit-preferences after re-starting Quicktime+
D'ye mean "Go to the QuickTime control panel (or go "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences ..." and in the Audio tab, check "Safe mode (wave out only)", click OK, restart QuickTime, and then try a "Help > Update ..."?
(Hoping here that we can get a better workaround for Dakk than rolling back his video drivers,)

  • Can't Update Quicktime

When I try to open Quick time, nothing happens. The version file shows as 10.2.(603.12). So, I have tried to update it from the Apple store downloading version 10.8.3 which showed as successfully installed but it will still not open and the file information still tells me that the version is 10.2.(603.12). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong please?

I may not have explained myself very well. I have just bought my iMac OSX Mountain Lion having been used to Windows. It has Quicktime version 10.2.(603.12) already installed but because I thought it should open and it didn't, I presumed I had to update it from the Apple Store. I thought the Store showed version 10.8.3 as being an update for Quicktime on Mountain Lion, so I installed it.
If QT X v10.2 was already installed on your system, then your system came with Mountain Lion already installed. If you purchased an upgrade to Mac OS X v10.8.3, then you wasted your money. Luckily, it sounds like this was a normal upgrade made following notification that an update was available in the App Store. If so, then there is no need to uninstall anything since you are now running the latest available version of your software which I assume is what you actually want here.
Not sure how Windows systems work but on a Mac... During normal operations, you may periodically be notified automatically when software upgrades become available. Some upgrades will be provided through the App Store while others may be provided in the form of older installer packages from Apple. In addition, many non-App Store, third-party software applications will check for updates automatically when opened or as often as scheduled. In virtually all cases you will be given the option of installing or not installing the updates at your discretion. A small number of applications may require that you manually check for updates or allow you to opt for manual update checks as you desire.
What I was asking was, if 10.8.3 is not needed, how can I get rid of it. In Windows I would have been able to go into Add/Remove Programmes and delete it.
Mac OS X v10.8.3 refers to the operating system under which everything else runs. Such a system is needed whether it is the previous v10.8.2 or the current v10.8.3 version. If you want the latest OS fixes, enhancements, and security updates, then it is needed. Otherwise you must reinstall the older operating system. As far as QT is concerned, it doesn't matter which OS you are using since there haven't been any changes to it.
I understand about a backup but unfortunately, I didn't receive my external backup drive for backups until the day after I installed QT 10.8.3 so perhaps that means 10.8.3 has to stay, hopefully doing nothing in the background.
This is something I highly recommend. I keep a number of external independent drives and RIADs attached to my system. In fact I am currently still running the MAC OS X v10.8.3 update from an external drive. (Haven't really noted any problems to date.) As to QT, the update did not mention any changes to the QT structure embedded within the operating system (v7.7.1) or to the QT X (v10.2) player itself.
You also seem to be using the operating system version and QT player version references as if they were the same thing. Basically you are now using the Mac OS X v10.8.3 operating sytem which still includes the same QT embedded structure (v7.7.1) which can be accessed by the QT X v10.2 and QT 7 v7.6.6 player (as well as by other QT based apps like GarageBand, iMovie, iTunes, Compressor, MPEG Streamclip, etc.) graphic interfaces.

  • Can i update quicktime without updating itunes?

I want to update my quicktime but I don't know how to do it without updating my iTunes. When my sister updated the iTunes on her laptop, it wasn't able to recognize her iPod because the iPod was outdated. I have the same kind of iPod so I think that means it won't be compatible with an updated version of iTunes. How can Apple force me to update my iTunes to a version that will probably lose all my music and not recognize my iPod? Is there some way around this? I appreciate the help anyone can offer. Thanks so much!

That seems unusual. Not sure what is going wrong for you with that.
    Let's try another tack.
Open your Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). If ASU offer you the opportunity to just update your QuickTime (in other words, it offers you a QuickTime as well as an iTunes + QuickTime), then select only the QuickTime, and install that.
If it only offers you an iTunes + QuickTime, do no install anything just yet. First (in ASU), go "Tools > Open Downloaded Updates Folder". Delete any files currently in there. Now go back into the ASU main window, select the iTunes + QuickTime entry and go "Tools > Download only".
Once the downloads have completed, go back into the Downloaded updates folder, and doubleclick the QuickTime.msi file.
Does just QuickTime install for you? If so, launch the player. Does it launch, or are you asked for a newer version of Apple Application Support?
If the latter, go back into the Downloaded Updates folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi. After that installs, does your QuickTime Player launch properly?

  • Can't update quicktime on my windows xp computer

ok i had issues with my itunes and followed someones adice on how to fix it could uninstall itunes just fine but i could not uninstall quicktime 7.7.1 and now it wont update either its really starting to frustrate me when i try to uninstall to do a clean install it gets halfway through and then rolls back when it tries to do an auto update the same thing happens

    Many thanks.
it collects the data goes through and then itconfigures quicktime and comes up with fatal error during installation this happens when ever i try to unistall from quictime itself or from the contrl apnel
I think we'd better see if some other application (other than QuickTime itself) has dropped old QuickTime componentry in the system files on the PC. (If there's a version mismatch between the old componentry and the "QuickTime proper" componentry, that can create those symptoms.)
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • I can't update Quicktime

I installed Itunes + Quicktime when I try to execute Itunes says that I'm runing an old Quicktime version 7.02 and Itunes needs 7.03 or latest version.
When I try to install Quicktime Standalone player I get this error:
Error 1606. Could not access network location QTComponents\
I tried to read some post from other people with the same error I alredy checked the regedit part but all is fine.
Why Itunes + Quicktime don't install latest version?
Why I'm still having the old one ?
How can I make work this with my Ipod ?

    http://www.techzonez.com/comments.php?shownews=15345
I have one solution for you.. I just also bought my Ipod VIdeo 60 GB 3 days ago and having problem with Quicktime 7.0.3.
Everytime I click on Itunes Icon on my desktop, it says you have older version of Quicktime 7.0.2, Itunes need 7.0.3 or later to be able to play Itunes, Please reinstall Itunes....I did reintalling adn uninstalling millions of times.. still it was the same problem.
Now what I recommend is to uninstall all Quicktime version and Itunes in your computer. Delete everytime you have... shutdown wait for couple of minutes and then go to the above site address I provided. Only download Quicktime alone. Do not download qiucktime and itunes together.. It is no good. And do not go to Apple site to download because it will download together.. That's not what we want. Download Quicktime 7.0.3 version for windows. After successful installation.. Only then Go to apple site and only download Itunes alone. This will work I guaranteed. Because mine is working now!!! Let me know the outcome.. Good luck!!

How can I update QuickTime and Java then without upgarding? I wish to keep a back channel to OS9

Mac OS X Tiger was discontinued years ago, and if Software Update doesn't detect any new update, it's because you are running the latest Java and QuickTime version for Tiger.
Apart from that, I see that you have a G5, so the most recent Mac OS X version you can use is Mac OS X Leopard, another version that it's (or it's going to be) discontinued soon. PowerPC support is completely dead now, and if you want the most recent QuickTime and Java versions, you will need a Intel-based Mac with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, that have got the latest Java 6 versions and they are compatible with Java 7
