Can't update to iOS5

Yesterday I wanted to update my iphone 3GS iOS. It automatically updated to 4.2.1. through iTunes. Now iTunes summary info shows that my iPhone software is up to date and when I check for update it tells me that iOS4.2.1 is the current version. Why won't it automatically update to iOS 4.3 or iOS 5? Can anybody help? Thank you. Alena

No that's not right. I have an iPhone 3GS and i only cant download the 3.4.1 version too..
So this cant be the right answer....
Do someone know the real reason?
PS: One of my friends has got an 3GS too and can update to iOS 5

I keep getting message saying that iTunes can't update to iOS5 because applesoftwareupdate.msi cannot be found. I've tried extracting the files from iTunes setup using winRAR, but I'm still getting an error because the old applesoftwareupdate.msi cannot be uninstalled. I've even Tried using add/remove programs to remove it from my computer and then use the extracted file but it still can't be located. Previous threads have said to use Windows Startup Utility or something , but that is not available anymore. I am really frustrated and have had to use a different computer to connect my iPad to. If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

I have been trying to update to iOS 5 since it was released and was excited about the new update released fixing the bugs, but I still can't get pass the backup stage. Keep getting an error (-43). Wondering if you have a current Backup on iTunes ...if yes you could put the iPhone in DFU Mode by holding the Home button while you plug in the lightning cable. Then you could Restore the iPhone to Factory Settings on 8.0.2 and after a full Restore go back and then Restore from your Backup. This happens every time a public release occurs. Many folks on the Golden Master or otherwise in the AppleSeed program with a Beta version for some reason don't move to the official release ...then the software time-bomb hits and they can't upgrade.

I searched more on google and found out that The MC086LL "3rd Gen" 8GB Ipod Touch cannot be updated to IOS 5. In actuality, only the 32GB and 64GB models were actually 3rd gen. The 8GB is actually a 2nd gen Ipod with updated software. Look at the model number on the back. Apple's 2nd gen model number is A1288. The 3rd gen model number is A1318.

Can I Update To iOS5 On 1 PC, Then Sync With My Main PC?

I cannot download iTunes 10.5 on my W7 x64 system, however I have installed 10.5 on my XP laptop.
I was curious to know if I could upgrade iOS5 and erase everything on my iPhone 4 with my XP laptop, then plug it back into my iTunes 10.4 on my W7 computer and sync eveything back up.
Any help would be appreciated .

I've looked on-line and it seems that many people are having the same problems. No, it's not my Internet connection or my computer. This is a software problem as my phone was working fine before it made me update and I've heard the same story over and over again. The update to ios5 messed up my phone. Now Apple should fix it. I can't restore my phone, just gets to the end then quits. It says " iTunes recognizes a phone in recovery mode" so it is being detected. I've tried this on many different computers, at different locations, through a wireless connection and connected directly. Please fix. This happened in Oct or Nov, 2011 when the ios5 update came out.
