Can't update to OS X Mavericks, or anything else.

I know that my MacBook is compatable with the new Mavericks update (it's made in 2008 and has version 10.6.8 installed), but it won't upgrade. I've tried downloading Mavericks directly from the app store, and I've already checked the software update. It says that I'm all caught up! I'M NOT! How can I download the updates, and can I do it WITHOUT going to an Apple store? If all else fails, I'll take the Apple store though. Just help me update my MacBook.

the only  2008 MacBook that is compatible is the late 2008 aluminum model.

We don't know a thing about your hardware, so we really cannot answer. See below.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • How can I reinstall Safari 8.0 without disturbing anything else?

How can I reinstall Safari 8.0 without disturbing anything else?  I have OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite & Safari 8.0 (that comes in it) installed on a MacBook Pro laptop and a Mac Mini tabletop computer. I want to access internet banking which goes without problems on the laptop but does not work on the tabletop. The latter says "somebody tried to display the application in a frame..." whatever that means and obviously for safety reasons I can not start banking it always comes back to the screen with this warning. I tried Mozilla FireFox on the tabletop Mini and everything works fine including the banking. A Mac expert suggested something is wrong with the Safari settings and I should reinstall it. How do I do this without reinstalling the System? Would it suffice to wipe out the Safari Preferences and start anew? I am looking for somebody's advice more experienced than I am. Thanks!

    Hello isza41,
Before you try to do any uninstall/install stuff let me suggest you something:
Create a new user and check if the same happens within its account. You could do so by going trough the following steps:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
Click Add below the list of users.
Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user. - Standard user account would be perfect here.
Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Using a password hint is recommended to help the user remember his or her password.
    Click Create User.
Now Logout from your account (⌘⇧Q) and Login to the one you have just created. This account is fresh without any changed settings(as a new instance would look like).
Check if the same would happen and you would see if this is an issue with your installation or something more general.

Do you have Logitech Gaming Software installed?  If so, uninstall it and see if it resolves the issue.

  • Can I make a DVD using Quicktime or anything else in my arsenal?

First off I apologize for m idiocracy in posting this in "Quicktime for Windows" before this as I simply was noy paying any attention, also, please forgive me what I am about to ask has been discussed, but I didn't find any answers in my searching so here goes: How can I make a DVD that will play in TV set DVD players? Do I need any alternate programs or possibly an upgrade to Quicktime Pro?
Heres the situation I have that way, with any luck, you'll understand what and I am trying to do (and hopefully tell me it's a rather easy process): I have a friend that has a bunch of skate videos available for download on his personal web page....turns out those downloads are .mgp and they play through Quicktime. Now what I want to do is take those said videos and make them into a DVD I can watch in any player. Is this possible with Quicktime, iDVD, or anything else that came standard with my new Macbook or do I need another program? Sorry, I'm a new Mac user.
Thanks for the help I've already been given on ths site and the info I am sure to receive now. So far these discussion forums have been extremely helpful.

If you have do do many then buy Toast 8 Titanium and use them directly in Toast and skip first making a QT version then turning around and making yet another version. Which avoid compressing the clips twice as well. MPEG-1 is a very low quality codec so I would not compress the clips once to QT and again to iDVD.
Also iDVD is fussy and takes forever, Toast isn't and doesn't.

  • My Iphone is on, but home and lock buttons are completely unresponsive. I can swipe the screen but i cannot do anything else. help me please :(

I was jus trying to download a few new apps when it said I had no storage left, so i went to delete some things, and after i was done, i tried to press the home button to go home. It didn't work, but yet if I clicked it the 3 times it would invert my colors still. I then tried to lock my phone or turn it off and neither worked.
I can still swipe on the settings screen but nothing else. The AssistiveTouch won't even take me back to my home screen. HELP

Try holding the Home and Power button together for at least 15 seconds or until the Apple logo comes on.  Then let go and wait for the phone to reset and restart.  This will take a few minutes and you will not lose any data.
If this does  not work put your phone in recovery mode and connect it to iTunes.   Then restore the phone to factory settings and then restore from backup.  This will wipe your settings and data but if you have made a recent backup it should not be a lot.

  • The logic board of my macbkpro 10.6.8 (OS ML) has died. I want t migrate info to another McbkPro (OS Snow Leopard) but is asking me to update to same OS. Can I update the latter to Mavericks and migrate the info from Mountain lion? thanks

Hi i took my macbook pro to an apple store because it would not start correctly. The veredict was that the logic board was dead. As this is a very expensive item to replace, I have decided I will buy a new one but I am currently overseas, and will wait a couple of months when I get back home. This is a macbookpro 15 inch early 2011, running on Mountain Lion OS. I have another macbook pro 13inch running on snow leopard. At the store we tried to migrate the info using an ethernet cable (using the "T" command on startup) but the system asked for an update of the OS. The guy at the store told me I had to update the OS so that the two macs would be on the same OS - mountain Lion. As the newest (and free) OS is Mavericks, I wonder wheather I coud update the 13 inch mac to mavericks and perform the migration. The guy at the store was explicit to say that if the OS were different it would not work. But reading on the apple website it seems that mavericks support this kind of migration altough is not explicit about it. Can you please help?
    thanks

    Hi BobRz,
As this is a new issue for me, I believe I had the incorrect approach, maybe you can help me. What I want to do is recover a few files in my desktop, and some information i had on the iCal application and the Mail application as well.As I do not want to do a full migration into this computer (which is not mine) I believe that starting the damaged MBP in Target mode should allow me to search and cop the files I need. But:
    1. Can I open the Ical and mail apps to look for the info I need while reading it as an external HD  ?
    2. Do the target machine (my friends) still need to be updated to ML o Mavs so that it recognizes my MBP as an external drive if starting it in Target mode ? (no migration assistant)
    Thanks.

  • HT201364 Can't update to OS X Mavericks

I am currently running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, on my MacBook but it will not let me download Mavericks in the App Store. Not sure why? My MacBook meets all the requirements for OS X Mavericks. See Below...

I think you cannot download/install OS X Mavericks because of a problem.
Important Notes: Before updating to Mavericks:
Repair your disk. Disk Utility can fix certain disk problems—for example, multiple apps quit unexpectedly, a file is corrupted, an external device doesn’t work properly, or your computer won’t start up.
(If no problems are discovered, you don’t need to repair it.)
Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the letter C key.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the key.
Select your desired language, then click the right arrow on the bottom.
Click Utilities on the menu bar, then click Disk Utility.
In the list at the left, select the disk you want to repair. Select Macintosh HD.
Check your S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom. If Disk Utility tells you the disk is About to Fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
If the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom tells you that Verified, proceed to Step 8.
    Click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that "The disk appears to be OK" or "The disk has been repaired", you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. Check each file in the list of affected files. If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it. If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted. (Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.)
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.

  • IPad Mini - "Sign in to Facetime" continually pops up; can't get rid of it or do anything else. I've never signed in to Facetime. Help.

When I open the iPad Mini, immediately a "Sign in to Facetime" message pops up, along with a keyboard. If I 'cancel' it pops back within a second or so. I cannot do anything on the Mini now. What happened? (I have never used Facetime.) The only 'odd' thing I did recently was to delete unwanted free games. Help, please. JoAnne

Try RIGHT clicking on different areas of the toolbars on Firefox, mainly try right clicking on/around the url bar & forward/back navigation buttons. When you get the correct spot if will give you a menu with the toolbars available (whether or not they're active) and a couple other options. Just uncheck the Yahoo one & you should be all set.
As you say though it may be some other bar disguised as a yahoo bar. Any chance you can get a screen shot of it & post it here?

  • If I would update Snow Leopard to Mavericks, would I have this?

    Hello, everybody!
As I got no real experience comments from people who updated Mac OS from Snow Leopard to Mavericks on a MacBook White Unibody, on this discussion, now I'm trying to be more concise, and ask you for more specific questions on the matter.
So, if I would updated to Mavericks, Would I have…?
VoiceOver Voices in different languages, as they come from factory since Lion, or stayed just with the English ones I have now?
Full Screen capability of all apps at the same time? Now, it's like my PC has only one "Full Screen", so, when you open one app on Full Screen, all the others go to windows.
The newest versions of iLife, iWork, Photo Booth, Stickies…? Now, I have Garage Band 6.0.5, iPhoto 9.2.3, iMovie 9.0.4; iWork 9.1, Photo Booth 3.0.3, Stickies 7.0
iChat, iWeb, iDVD, Front Row, X11… as I have now, or would them be erased or changed for other apps? Or I would not  be capable for running them, as the Power PC apps I have and can run now?
Chess app in Spanish too, as it comes from factory since Lion, or it still remains only in English, as now?
Spanish dictionary on Disctionary app? Now I only have English and Tesaurus on my Mac, and the capability of searching on wikipedia on internet from the app?
Timer Coalescing, App Nap, Compressed Memory, GateKeeper, app's sandboxing, Automatic Versions… or any of those is not allowed on my MacBook White unibody?
The ability to see the complete miniature windows opened on the same desk as easy as sliding up four fingers on the trackpad (as I can see now the ones opened on the same "Space")?
To update my RAM? Now I have 2 Gb, and I saw it is exactly the requirment of Mavericks. I'm not sure which was the requirement of Snow Leopard, which actually runs pretty fine.
This is enough now for helping me to take or not the decission. Thank you all.

app nap - appears to work with Mavericks according to Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/
I've been looking for it again. You say App Nap would work on my macbook white, it seems it wouldn't, according to:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
    Power Nap
Supported by the following Mac models:
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook Pro with Retina display
    iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    Mac mini (Late 2012)
At least, one question less :-). I'm not quite as sure with all  the rest of new odd and eds…
PPC apps haven't been supported since Lion was introduced (2011).
    Your iLife will be updated;
iWeb has been discontinued. So has iDVD, but if you have it installed, it still works. Front Row was discontinued. No idea about X11.
PowerPC applications are supported on Snow Leopard, my actual OS. As apple does not mention anything about on http://www.apple.com/osx/http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/, I can easily guess that same thing could happen with other apps, like FrontRaw, iWeb or the others apps I mentioned. For me, it sounds strange that apple offers its best ultimate OS just for free. I think there's something hidden for user like me, with Snow Leopard., for instance, not to update Voice over Voices, PhotoBooth or anything else…
I'd like to be completely sure of what i'd have, for example if I'd have spanish dictionary and VoiceOver voices before updating. If not, probably it does worth to do so.
Sorry, but how do you propose having more than one app at full screen at a time?
By means of something we call SPACES on Snow Leopard, and you called MISSION CONTROL, if I'm not wrong, on Lion and upper. You can switch among different desks running every one a different app on FullScreen, can't you?
By the way, which OS did your macbook pro come with from factory? the one that is running mavericks now.

  • Hey guys I got a used iBook from a family friend who had it password protected and he doesn't remember the password. Is there a way to get around this without wiping the computer?I don't have any of software discs and can't update or delete anything.Thanx

Hey guys I got a used iBook from a family friend that has it password protected.I can't update or delete programs or download anything without the passwords and he doesn't remember them.Is there any way for me to get around these without wiping the computer and starting from scratch?

    Hello,
Sadly without the system disk you can't do a lot. I would suggest you enable root user, log in as root and reset your administrators password, however you can't without knowing the administrator password first.
The only solution would be is to obtain the correct system disk or buy a retail copy of Mac OS X. But note, it depends on what version of the iBook you own depends, on what version of Mac OS X you will require.
You can still obtain the system disk or retail disks from online vendors, but they come at a cost.
System disk are grey in color, while retail disk have a big 'X' on it.
    Best of luck

I can't update iPhoto or iMovie after upgrading to Mavericks.  It stated that the Apple ID and password were not the same that were used to purchase the software?

    The Andyman,
are you the original purchaser of your MacBook Pro? Have you associated your MacBook Pro with the same Apple ID which you’d used to purchase iPhoto and iMovie?
