How can I upgrade from OS X Snow Leopard to OS X Lion?

Well Mt Lion is the latest, but if your machine can't do 10.8, then call Apple via phone and order 10.7
However you really need to do your homework first, as a lot of software and drivers could stop in 10.7, no Rosetta like in 10.6, could cost you plenty.

can I upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my MacBook 10.5.8?  How and were can I get snow leopard if this is possible?

The hardware requirements for 10.6 are
Snow Leopard requires 1 GB of RAM and 5 GB of available drive space.
The first generation Intel Macs, based on Intel Core Solo and Core Duo CPU, do not support 64-bit operation; all Core 2 Duo and later models do.
These models do not have graphics processors that can benefit from OpenCL:
MacBook Pro released before June 2007
    MacBook released before October 2008
    original MacBook Air
    iMacs released before March 2009
Mac mini released before March 2009
Mac Pro released before January 2008 (Jan. 2008 and later models with unsupported video cards can used the GeForce 8800 upgrade kit - Apple part no. MB137Z/A - for OpenCL support.)
If you Mac Book meets these thaen you must puchase a Snow Leopard DVD. Amazon has it listed

  • Can I upgrade from Tiger to snow leopard using an external DVD drive

I've been trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger but keep nothing happens. I keep getting a grey folder with a question mark on it. Can anyone tell me what this means?

If you have another Mac with Firewire, you can use it's Optical Drive as a big Firewire Optical, put the Install disc in the other Mac, boot the other Mac in to
    Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Connect a fw cable, use the Otion key on this one to choose the Install Disc in the other Mac.
Can I install if I make a bootable copy to my firewire external?
Yes, especially if you have a small 5 to 9GB Partition, you can use DU to Restore the Install Disc to that.

  • How can I upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard wihout violating EULA while Mac Box Set is no longer available?

I use my original Tiger bought with MacBook Pro. But now so many applications do not support Tiger, so I decided to upgrade to SL.
But required by Apple way to do this with Mac Box Set seems to be impossible. Mac Box Set is no longer available from Apple.
Is upgrading using Snow Leopard disc, which is still in Apple Store, ok?
I will be gratefull for help.

The Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife ’09 and iWork ’09. If you just use the SL installer, you don't get the additional apps.

It's possible that some of your current apps may not work in Snow Leopard. You can check here: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Application Compatibility List at http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • Can I upgrade from Leopard(OS X 10.5) to Mountain Lion(OS X 10.8)?

I have a 2 1/2 year old iMac still in the box with Leopard pre-installed. How do I get my iMac up to date with Mountain Lion? Is Mountain Lion too much for my iMac's Intel 3.06GHz Core i3 processor and 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM?

No, you don't have to bother with 10.5.8.
When you have installed Snow Leopard, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • I have mac pro quad can i upgrade from leopard to lion on one of the hardrives and then drag all my protools sessions into from the leopard hardrive to the lion hardrive thanks

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools,   it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

  • I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I noticed that I have more capacity available on the Macintosh HD. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I noticed that I have more capacity on the Macintosh HD than before the upgrade. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer and nothing appears to be missing. Before the upgrade I had around 111 GB capacity with around 10.50 GB available on the Mac HD but now after the upgrade I have 119 GB capacity and 20.92 GB available. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

No, but the upgrade removed unneeded PowerPC code and changed the way free space is determined.

  • Can I upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to mountain lion? Not sure how old my MacBook is. How can I find that information?

Can I upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to mountain lion on my MacBook?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and compare the model identifier with MacBook5,1, which is the earliest MacBook that can run Mountain Lion and newer.
A MacBook older than that which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by clicking here. Neither Mountain Lion nor Lion support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

For future reference: You don't have to install an upgrade, just because Apple would like you to do so. Never install a major upgrade without first checking to see what problems people are having, and what software will be incompatible. You lose nothing by waiting a while.
You can restore your Snow Leopard system from your most recent complete system backup before upgrading. If you have no backup, you will have to try to back up now, and then you will have to re-install Snow leopard from the system disks that came with your computer. You will have to boot from the Install disk, and erase your drive, and re-install Snow Leopard, then apply the various Snow Leopard updates to get back to 10.6.8. After that, you can try to bring back some of the critical files from your Yosemite backup, but some of it may not survive the transition.
