Can't Upgrade Iphone 3G 3.1.3 OS to 4.2 OS

I have an Iphone model number MB704LL that was recently restored to the factory defaults. When i select the update button which has a message stating a newer version of the Iphone software is available (version 4.2)....When I click on the button I get the follow message" This version of Itunes 9.2.1 is the current version" Well, I am not trying to update itunes. I have tried restarting the computer and confirmed I have the latest version of Itunes but no luck. Any suggestions as there are apps I want to download but many are now only compatible with version 4.0 OS or higher.

I have ITunes 10 and still cannot update Iphone, it keeps "timing out" even though it has only been 15 minutes or so (I have tried many times and get the same response). I see others say it takes over an hour to update. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Plug it in & start iTunes.
Then you can sync in iTunes, and then download the update & install.

  • How can i upgrade Iphone software without having to spend £132 on Mac OS?

I have OS 10.4.11 and want to upgrade my iphone to new sw version but cant as I can only upgrade Itunes to version 9.1.1. on this OS.
Is there any way I can upgrade my Iphone without having the expense of upgrading my Mac OS (I would have to purchase the Mac Box set at £132)?

If you have an Intel Mac, all you need is the $29 upgrade disk. Regardless of what you might read or be told, the $29 upgrade disk will install a full copy of SL.

  • Can't upgrade iPhone 3GS to ios4

My wife and I purchased 3GS iPhones shortly before the 4G was released. We both have identical Panasonic Toughbooks, mine is running Vista, and hers is running WinXP. Neither one of us can update from 3.1 to the latest 4.2 os.
We both have the latest version of iTunes. We both get the same error message, which is:
    "The network connection time out
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later".
I am a moderately advanced computer user, not a newbie, but don't have a lot of experience with Apple products.
There is nothing wrong with our network connections that I can tell.
When I attempt to download the update iTunes indicates that it is downloading for five minutes--I have a download meter on my PC that indicates during this time that for those five minutes I am downloading at a rate of more than 5MB. Itunes indicates the download is complete and then shows the message "Processing file". After a couple of minutes we get the message above.
I've read through the support documents on the Apple website and made sure that the appropriate ports are open.
We are past the 90 period and thus ineligible for free support from Apple.
The apple store tells us we can make an appointment with a tech who will upgrade the phones for us, but the phones will be wiped clean of all contacts, address books, apps etc.
They assure us that once we sync up again to iTunes, all these things will be restored.
I have also read on some online forums that this upgrade may cause adverse reactions to my 3GS phone, such as slowing it down considerably.
Am I being unduly concerned about upgrading? Perhaps I would be better off leaving the phone as is with the older OS?
    Any help is appreciated----AARGH!

    Well I spoke too soon.
The update was successful, but now I cannot connect to the 3GS data network.
Cannot get email and cannot open a page in Safari.
+"Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."+
    +"Cannot Get Mail+
+THe mail server is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."+
Email and internet work fine on WiFi.........no data using 3GS network.
Looks like I will have to revert back to old OS.

  • Can not upgrade iPhone 3G to iOS 5

If this phone wasn't supported by the software, why offer to upgrade to it? I don't know what's wrong, I'm from the Philippines, you see, and I'm using a local network, not at&t, and it said the sim was locked, but I don't know the network lock code to this. I tried unlocking my mom's at&t network lock but it won't..this is driving me crazy. Do I need to get this hacked or anything? Because the phone's pretty much useless now. If I can't do anything about this... how can I restore it?

You need to start your own thread, instead of hijacking this one.  When you do post your own, then please explain what the issue is.  It is hard to help with no information.
What computer OS do you have?
    What ios version?
    What ituens version?
    What have you tried?
    What happened?
    Error message?
    What did it say?

  • Can't upgrade iPhone apps because store says they are "no longer available"

I checked for application updates for my iPhone in iTunes and a couple apps show up, but when I click "Download All Free Updates" iTunes gives an error: "the item you tried to buy is no longer available"
This makes no sense -- I tracked it down to two apps, "Feeds" and "SysMon" but here is what is weird. Both of those apps show new versions in the app store just by manually searching for them, there are clearly new versions in the store, and iTunes is telling me this, but I can't download them. Has anyone else seen this when trying to update applications?

Have you tried clicking the update buttons on each app separately? I have occasionally gotten some weird errors when using the "all available updates" button.

  • How can I upgrade iPhone 4 CDMA to 6.x iOS and not 7.x iOS?

I have many apps that will not run on my 5.1.1 iOS.  I have been told not to load 7.x per out IT department because of significant performance issues.
Can I load the latest 6.x iOS?

You can't. You can only install the current version, which is 7.1.1. You do not get a choice other than to update or not update.

    Background Info:
    - I live in San Diego and Tijuana,Mexico. I commute back and forth.
    - My iTunes account is US with a US Credit Card.
    - Norton 360. (I checked my settings. iTunes (Quicktime, updater, etc) is allowed in firewall.

  • New iPhone / Old Tiger MacBook that can't upgrade to new iTunes - will iCloud save me?

    Hi guys,
Thanks in advance for your advice.  I have a newer iPhone (jailbroken and unlocked if that matters) and an older MacBook 10.4.11 on Tiger.  I tried to link up my new phone with iTunes but got the error that I must have the newer iTunes which is not available for Tiger.  I dutifully tried to upload to Leopard but my computer just stalls at the reboot.   I have made 10g of space on it but it just spins and spins.  It could be my disk drive or maybe more space is needed?   I have two levels of questions
    1.   Will the new iCloud service in the Fall bypass this problem anyway?   I could if needed upload things to my work newer at-work computer if it somehow can upload my iphone content from the old phone and then wait it out until September.
    2.  Thoughts on why the upgrade won't take for my Tiger MacBook?
    Best,
    Summer

You mentioned you had a newer 'at work' computer?
You could sync your old phone to that one and than sync your new phone using the same iTunes account and password.
Your photos, as you probably know, are synced from a photo folder on your computer. If you have this folder shared or on an external drive you could plug that drive into the 'work' computer and sync from that.
An easier method may be for you to back-up your old iPhone on the 'work computer' and then restore the new iPhone from that back-up on the 'work computer'. This would sync your photos, iCal, contacts, etc.

  • I have a MacBook 5,1 (13.3" aluminum from 2007 or 2008). Automatic updates will only let me get to OSX 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard, Lion 10.6 or even 10.6.8?  Also, will I have any issues with my iPhone if it's updated to iOS 7.1?

I have a MacBook 5,1 (13.3" aluminum from 2007 or 2008). Automatic updates will only let me get to OSX 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard, Lion 10.6 or even 10.6.8?  Also, will I have any issues with my iPhone if it's updated to iOS 7.1?

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is trying to backup data from the iPhone.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support.  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my phone?

Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is backing up data from the iPhone before installing the new operating system.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support with no success.  I still get the error everytime (about 5 minutes into backing up iPhone data).  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my iPhone (the error message says that if I continue I will lose all data on the phone)?  If I have already synced the phone before upgrading the OS, would I be able to restore my data after installing the new OS by syncing after the OS upgrade is complete?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.

  • ITunes can't see iPhone after upgrade, phone became inactivated.

The phone will no longer connect after upgrading software through iTunes.
It's back to the "emergency call" screen, and "Activate your iPhone. Connect to iTunes" screen.
When I try to connect, iTunes hangs.
    (iPhoto opens and downloads pictures!)
    Help! Any ideas?

Marc...I think you are confused by what I am trying to say. For your iPhone to be seen by your computer/iTunes you must have a good install. I suspect that you have a bad install of iTunes "On Your COMPUTER" To fix this (and it has worked for many other users) You need to delete/uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support and Quick Time from "your COMPUTER".
Download a new copy of iTunes from the apple web site and reinstall. I am only trying to assist you, this is not a windows versus mac thing...this is a user help user forum, I do not (and you can check my posts) play the this is better then that game.
I want to help you fix your problem which I just did with another user have a similiar problem to yours, so that you can enjoy your iPhone like the others that assist in these forums.
    Hope this helps,
    Good Luck
