Can't upgrade iPhoto '09 library to '11

Installed iLife 11 and started iPhoto. When I start it, the app tells me I need to upgrade my iLife '09 library. I click Upgrade, and it says it is "unable to open this library" and quits.
I tried deleting the .plist file; also tried opening iPhoto with Command and Option keys held down and repairing/rebuilding permissions; no dice on any of it.
Any ideas?

I was having the same problem. After installing iLife '11 I opened the new iPhoto '11 and I got the standard "this library needs to be upgraded" message. I, naturally, clicked upgrade. After the second progress bar appeared and started to progress it stalled. The spinning wheel in the iPhoto window did the same, then iPhoto promptly crashed.
The solution that I came up with was starting my computer in target disk mode to connect to another mac with iLife '09. First, I rebuilt the iphoto library and had it repair permissions to see if those were the problems. You can do that by holding command-option while opening iPhoto and you get a few options for rebuilding/checking different parts of the iPhoto library.
That didn't seem to make a difference when I tried upgrading the library again in iPhoto '11, but it could have made a difference further down the line.
So, I started in target disk mode again and opened my library with the iPhoto '09 again, but this time I went through and deleted all of the videos I had in my iPhoto library. I manually copied and pasted them into a separate folder on my computer before emptying the trash.
When I restarted and opened iPhoto '11 after getting rid of my movies the library upgrade went just fine. Now, I don't know if the problem was the fact that I had movies or the fact that the movies were AVIs. I think it was the fact that they were AVI files because I saw something about AVI come up in the crash reporter when the library updates caused iphoto to crash.
This may not be the exact problem that all of you have been experiencing, but I hope this helps someone.

How can I remove the iPhoto upgrade to my iMac OSX 10.2.8? Can the upgrade return my library?

With respect, we'll need rather more detail than that.
In general, you can only roll back an upgrade to a library with a back up. No back up, no roll back.

Can I upgrade IPhoto 6.0.6 to Iphoto 11' on my Mac OS 10.4.1 ?

Thanks. So I understand I can't. What can I do with my IPhoto 6.0.6 , I had a message saying it's not possible anymore to edit albums from this version. Is there another version compatible with my Mac 10.4.1 ?

The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
iLife 08's full system requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM

Mac OS X does not offer a Clean install option.    If by clean install you mean erasing the system, that is not recommended unless:
    1. You bought a used/refurbished Mac and there is software on it without any accompanying discs, and it is older than July 20, 2011 in model release:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Or if it is at or newer, then erase it if it has applications installed that would not have been prebundled with it and you have no CDs for those applications.
You don't want someone else's software keys, or accounts, or to be running unlicensed software.  At and newer Macs offer a built-in internet restore for their software with a command-R boot that lets you erase the system with Disk Utility, and then install from the internet the latest operating system.
    2. You have a hardware issue and want to eliminate possible software issues as the cause when troubleshooting a problem all at once.
Issues affecting a new install have to be isolated before you attempt it.   Unless you know it is software or hardware, erasing may only mask other problems.

  • I can not open Iphoto, my library crashed!!!

I can not open Iphoto, my library seens to be curruted. I tried to use option command function but nothing happens. I just can see that it is trying to update the software, step 1 of 11. Please can someone help me?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Apps can't access iPhoto 09 library photos on OS X 10.7.2

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.7.2 from 10.6.8.  I have iphoto 09 installed.  I can access my photos within iphoto 09, but not from any external application, including OS X Mail.  Applications can see the library but not any of the photos within it.   Everything was working fine using OS X 10.6.8.
Any ideas what's going on?  I'm hoping I'm not forced to upgrade iphoto to the latest rev.

  • Can't Upgrade iPhoto 9.4.3 or iMovie 9.09

I currently have iPhoto 9.4.3 on my Macbook 5,2 with OS X 10.9. I tried to upgrade it to 9.5. I manually checked updates in iPhoto and there isn't a purchase history of iPhoto in my account. I cannot find a upgrade package either like a combo update file. How can I upgrade it anyway? This also happens to iMovie. Garage band is fine because it's free now and I just purchased it again. And after I installed my Keynote, it vanished from purchase history. Pages was successfully installed but still remain uninstalled status in Mac App Store. It has been very weird since upgraded this old Macbook to 10.9.

This macbook comes with nVidia 9400M, this model is supported offically.

  • How can I assign iPhoto rebuilt library as a main one?

I recently rebuilt my iPhoto library, so now I have 2 files: "iPhoto library" and the second called "Rebuilt Library". When opening iPhoto, it shows me main iPhoto Library by default. Can I replace it with Rebuilt Library and remove IPhoto "main" library forever?

quit iPhoto and depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library command to select the proper library

  • Can't upgrade iPhoto Library - 'unable to write to library "iPhoto Library"'

I apologise in advance if this is a little convoluted.
I have a MacBook Pro purchased a little over a year ago and I'm not sure what version of iPhoto is was running. It had a meltdown when I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion and was ably serviced and returned to me with all my data heroically saved and stored in a shared folder.
When I got it back I upgraded successfully to Mountain Lion and installed all the iPhoto updates. After a false start, and having to reinstall iPhoto I am now running 9.4.3.
I have shifted my old iPhoto Library out of the shared folder and into the Pictures folder where it sits alongside the pretty much empty iPhoto Library created automatically by the install. When I try to open my old Library it says it needs to be upgraded, which makes sense, but immediately after the upgrade commences I get an error message saying 'Unable to write to library "iPhoto Library" Check that you have permission to write to the library directory'. I am not sure what to do from this point.
I have verified that the photos are all still in the old iPhoto Library Package.
    Thank you.
    Melanie

Hang on - I had browsed extensively, but it was only after I wrote my question that all the other similar ones popped up on the side bar. I've followed the advice in some of those and it seems to be working. I apologise, but I seem to be unable to delete this discussion.

  • How can I upgrade iPhoto from 8.1.2 but without upgrading OSX from 10.6.8?

I have an iMac ca. 2008 vintage which is currently running OSX 10.6.8. Due to various problems I had to do a restore and everything worked OK afterwards except iPhoto (v. 8.1.2.). When I try to launch it I get the error message "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem" - Error log below.
As I understand it I cannot reinstall the original version of IPhoto that came ready loaded on the iMac. On the App Store the only version of iPhoto available requires Yosemite and I don't want to upgrade to that.

Not sure why you "understand" that you can not reinstall the original version - you can reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer - if it came with CDs and you do not know where they are then contact Apple to see if they can be replaced
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first
But the error looks like you may need to reinstall the OS as you are missing sme required system elements

  • Can't access iPhoto '08 library but can see pictures

Greetings. I just upgraded from a PPC G5iMac running Tiger to a new iMac Intel running Snow Leopard. I backed up my computer using SuperDuper to an external hard drive. I reinstalled my pics by dragging the photo library to User/Pictures and replaced the iPhoto Library with my older copy of iPhoto '06 I was using. I didn't open iPhoto until I had done this. All the pictures, folders, events, etc are there and I can see them just fine. But I can't copy/paste or send pictures via email. The emails are blank. When I tried to copy/paste the message said that the files could be copied to this clipboard because they may have been deleted. My iPhoto is updated now to the latest version. Repairing the iPhoto Library had no effect. I tried to creat a new library but the iTunes library was grayed out as an option. I have read/write access so don't know what to do next. Thanks in advance!!

Do not import one Library to another. You'll lose all your albums, events, keywords etc and end up with a mess od duplicates and triplicates.
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • Can i upgrade iphoto'08 in snow leopard 10.6.5 because i have a lots of books i can't order for printing in the iphoto version 7.1.5

    please help me

You can buy an iLife 11 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay, or if desired and you have a compatible Mac, update it to 10.6.8 and then Mavericks, which will enable you to get iPhoto from the Mac App Store.
Whichever one you choose, back up your library, click here, and run the iPhoto library upgrader.
