Can't upgrade my PowerBook G4, now at 10.4.11 to 10.5. It meets all system requirements!

I need to upgrade my PowerBook G4 to 10.5 so that I can use the current version of iTunes. When I talked to the Apple tech guy he said my PowerBook specs indicate that it can run OS 10.5. Specs are: PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 1 GB memory plenty of disc space, Firewire and attached screen. All listed on the install disc for 10.5. When I start up the install, I select English and two seconds later a window pops up saying it can't install on this computer. Doesn't state why or what is missing! ARGGHH!! I double checked everything, ran disk utility, opened the battery compartment to verify (1.5GHz/1GB/80G/SuperDrive/BT/APX/Backlit KB). So all hardware requirements are met.
The disc says Mac OS version 10.5, AHT version 3A137, Disc version 1.0, 2Z691-6150-A.
Can anyone help?
Mike

Leopard, OS 10.5.x is the last OS X version that you can install on a powerPC procesor Mac.

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

  • Why can't I download Firefox 12 on my computer when I meet all system requirements?

I am running Windows 7 on my laptop, and am currently using Internet Explorer 9 as a web browser. I want to switch to Firefox. When I try to download Firefox 12, I get an error that the setup file couldn't be downloaded. The error won't tell me why it won't download, and I've double-checked all my download settings and system requirements; nothing seems out of place. Any suggestions?

  • Why can't Mountain be installed on a 2006 iMac?  I meet every system requirement.

My father would like to go ahead and upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I have upgraded the RAM on his his machine and it meets every system requirement other than it was manufactered in 2006.  I don't see any reason why it can't run the OS.

    Dear Captain,
    MichelPM wrote:
Your father's iMac can run OS X 10.7 Lion, though.
Whoa! He may NOT be able to run Lion 10.7. Only the last of the 2006 iMacs can run Lion due to processor limitations. Lion requires a minimum Core 2 Duo processor. Only the iMAcs that Apple names "Late 2006" have that processor. Here's how to find out:
    1) From your Apple menu, do "About this Mac".
    2) Look at the "Processor information" in the resulting window.
    3) The processor Information must read "Core 2 Duo," not "Core Duo" to run Lion.
If you wish further verification, click on "More Info" in the "About" window. That launches System Profiler; its opening screen looks like this (example taken from a notebook but the info is in the same places):
To run Lion, the Model Identifier must have the code 'iMac5,1" or higher number to run Lion.
While there, see how much RAM is installed. Even if the processor is Lion-capable, a lot of older iMacs have very little RAM by today's standards. 2GB RAM is the bare minimum for Lion. The Late 2006 iMac can use up to 3GB RAM, still dicey.

  • HT201364 Why can Maverick not be installed on my computer when I meet the system requirements?

I got my iMac in July 2007, which I believe is mid-2007, I am currently running v.10.6.8, have 2 GB memory and over 100 GB of available space. This to me meets the system requirements, so why do I get the "cannot be installed on this computer" message when I try to upgrade to Maverick?

Something does not match up.  Check your year of manufacture.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

  • Can I upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Mac OS X Tiger to Snow Leopard?

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4. Can I upgrade to v10.6 Snow Leopard? Just asking because I never upgraded to v10.5 Leopard. Are there any adverse impacts of doing this for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi jjhron;
As Stedman says you can't go to Snow Leopard with your G4 PowerBook but if your PB meets the specs for Leopard you can upgrade to that instead.

  • Can I upgrade my PowerBook G4 to work with a new wireless HP printer?

Can anyone tell me how to upgrade mu PowerBook G4 so I can print wireless to a new HP printer?  Can I upgrade to a newer operating system?

The latest operating system that the Powerbook can use is Leopard 10.5.  If you plan to upgrade, in the US call the Apple online store at 800-MY-APPLE soon, as they still had some Leopard in stock as of a few weeks ago.
The HP wireless printer is just another device on your wireless router network. If your Powerbook uses a wireless internet connection today, then the only thing you may need to do is to install an HP wireless printer driver, if there is one for whatever level of OS X you have. Check this HP page for a driver:  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html

I have an HP Pavillion dv6-2150us, which runs an Intel Core i3 @ 2.13 GHz, 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Can I upgrade this processor and if so, what processors are compatible to this system?

First think about memory and an SSD drive. Laptop processor upgrades are a big hassle and not cheap.

Yes, you need to upgrade to OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $30.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number.
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • Install CD says my computer can't install Snow Leopard, yet it seems to meet all the requirements

Hi, I have already checked to see that I meet the requirements in the instructions (and answers on similar questions). I am using a CD direct from Apple of the software (a copy of a 10.6.4 CD). Yet the install CD says it can't be installed on my computer and simply stops, its very vague about why.

    >(a copy of a 10.6.4 CD). That's your problem.  You got the wrong CD.  Any system with 10.5.8 will not be able to use a 10.6.4 CD.  The only 10.6 installer that will work with a 10.5.8 system (assuming it is Intel and 1 GB of RAM as G5 and G4 and G3 won't work), is the one with this label*
Anything with a different looking label is system specific only for the vintage Mac stated on the label that was released with the 10.6.x release stated on the label, or anythign with Upgrade, Dropin  will not work on a 10.5.8 machine, unless that 10.5.8 machine was released during the 3 weeks prior to the August 28, 2009 release of Snow Leopard.  OEM discs will not work unless Apple offered it directly to you stating it would for your Mac model and vintage Mac.
Contact AppleCare if you received the wrong disc from them.
Contact the person who gave you the disc and tell them it is the wrong disc otherwise.
You can buy a 10.6.3 retail disc with the above image if you have the system requirements for Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for $29.95.

  • HT3209 My computer meets all the requirements to view HD video content, why can I not download and view it?

I have all the minimum system requirements to view HD content on my computer. Why does iTunes tell me that I don't and cannot download my HD movies that I have already purchased? Why should I buy the SD version when my computer is completely capabile of viewing all HD content and has a very good video card with HDCP status showing that it's good?
Please help so that I can get my movies downloaded.

This is for the Windows 8-8.1 users out there:  If you have the Pro version of Windows 8 and just recently upgraded to 8.1, Microsoft automatically includes a Virtual Machine package called Hyper-V client.  It doesn't ask you if you want to install it, it just does.
This may also apply to Windows 7 users who may have inadvertently installed some version of Hyper-V on their computer.
The Hyper-V package installs a secondary video driver that breaks HDCP, which means you can't play HD movies even on a compliant system.  You need to get rid of it.  To do so:
    Go to Control Panel
    Programs and Features
Turn Windows Features on or Off
    Uncheck "Hyper-V"
    Reboot.
This applies to almost anything that requires HDCP, so if you're having trouble with Blu-Rays or Amazon Prime, that's likely the culprit.

  • How can I upgrade PowerPC PowerBook G4 to intel?

My brother's old PowerBook G4 was recently passed down to me since he passed a couple weeks ago. I am in college now and thought it was a good idea to use it for school. I found alternate programs that don't need intel processors; however, some programs required for my classes need intel processors. I was wondering if I can upgrade my new PowerPC's hardware to upgrade to later software without losing important data and a way that doesn't cause problems. Is it even possible the change the hardware?
    Specs:
    1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 processor
    1.25 GB RAM
    Thanks in advanced.

I've been looking for a Frostwire download, but the latest one I was able to find was 4.18.1. It only stays at "starting connection" when my internet connection is perfectly fine. Any later update will ask for Java update 1.6, which apparently isn't compatible. Does Apple even allow those kind of programs?
And as for document creating programs, I use OpenOffice. It's not an exact mirror of MS Office, but it gets the job done. Especially for a college student with a low budget.
    I am confused...
You need Intel to run an internet browser and OpenOffice?

  • How can I upgrade windows parallels desktop, now moved to Incompatible Software?

I just upgraded the OS to Mountain Lion and was surprised to learn that my Parallels desktop will not work.  It seems my Mac suggests that I buy the software again, but surely it must be possible to upgrade it?  I am a rather new Mac user and am rather lost

    HI,
For reference, I am running Parallels 7.0.15106.786747 under Mountain Lion with a Windows 7 Ultimate VM without major issues. The only problem I have encountered is an unresponsive Parallels menu once the VM is up and running. I have to shut show the VM and restart Parallels in order to access the menu items (e.g., to get the version number for this post).
