Can't upgrade OS to Tiger

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1gHz. When I try to install Tiger from retail disks, the hard drive doesn't show up as an installation destination. If I install Tiger from another computer using target disk mode, or try to boot from an external drive with Tiger installed, the PowerBook just gives me the gray screen with rotating gear forever and never boots. I have taken the computer to the Genius Bar at the Apple store, and they couldn't do any better in the 15 minutes they allot. I have tried a clean install, re-initialized the hard drive, repaired permissions and reset the PRAM. The machine works OK with the system it shipped with, but crashes more than I would like--and obviously won't run a lot of newer software.

Pieter5:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your computer was first introduced January 2003 (Shipped March 2003) and discontinued September 2003. If you have the original Hard Disk Drive (HDD) in the computer it is now over six years old. The average life of these drives is three to five years, and even before they fail completely their performance is slowly degraded. That would be the first place I would look. The AHT tests suggested by BGreg will check the HDD along with other hardware. If you can boot from the install disk try running Disk Utility and look particularly for the S.M.A.R.T Status, which, though not very accurate in Disk Utility, may give some indication of failing HDD. However, Disk Utility can also give you unreliable "verified" readings. So the "failing" grade is more reliable than the "verified".
If, of course, you have replaced the HDD and no longer have the original, please post back with info about your HDD.

  • Can I upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ ??

I was wondering if I could upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ or at a lower cost than full price. I do not need to upgrade that much because 10.4.11 is so great and I hate to leave it. Paying the full price of an operating system does not make sense to me. Can I do it cheaply because I am upgrading?

    No.
The $29 upgrade is from leopard to Snow Leopard.

  • Can I Upgrade Directly From Tiger To Snow Leopard?

I'm operating OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a pre-2008 Macbook with an Intel processor. I'd like to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
After doing a little research, I didn't see anything on the Snow Leopard packaging or on the Apple website which clearly states this, but can I upgrade directly to Snow Leopard? The Apple Store says Tiger users must buy the Mac Box Set (which includes iLife '09 and iWork '09). I really don't want to since I don't plan to use the features of iWork and can purchase iLife '09 separately.
Basically, my question is, can I upgrade to Snow Leopard (using a Snow Leopard upgrade @ $29) and, if so, will my prior version of iLife still function or will I be forced to upgrade to iLife '09. I'd rather pay $95 for things I know I would use, compared to $170 for extra, unused software.

    "Snow Leopard Upgrade Requirements
Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based Mac.
Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard users, buy the upgrade.
Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger users, buy the Mac Box Set."
I don't think there is any technical limitation to installing a clean 10.6 "upgrade" on a compatible machine, running either 10.4 or 10.5, however, the 10.6 license, that buyers must agree with, relies on the "honor system" for compliance.
I am about to upgrade my black MacBook to 10.6 with the Box Set, my Intel MacBook shipped with 10.4, one of the later models not long before 10.5 came out, and as I skipped 10.5, the 10.6 Box Set seems to be the only option, even though I am not interested in iWork so much.

  • Can I upgrade macbook with Tiger (10.4.11) to Lion?

I have a macbook with Tiger (10.4.11). Is it possible to upgrade to Lion? Or do I have to purchase a new computer? I have a fair amount of free space on the computer and I also have a 500GB external hard drive. Right now it won't even recognize my iPhone 4S
Also, if I can upgrade to Lion, can I do it directly, or do I have to go through Leopard and Snow Leopard first?

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under 10.6. You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) from 10.4 to 10.6. Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion from the App Store.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $100
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. WhenSystem Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC or Classic. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. PowerPC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need an application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped support for the the Power PC applications.

  • Can't upgrade emac to tiger

I was using 10.3.9 on my emac and tried to upgrade because I got a new ipod nano for Christmas. I decided to erase and install, but all I accomplished was erase. I now have no operating system. I have run disc utility and the hard drive is fine. I tried to load 10.3 back to no avail. I have repaired permissions and reset PRAM. I have the CD's and get the first one to run, but it fails on the second. I get a bomfatal error. HELP!

What kind of Tiger disk did you use? To upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4, you need retail install disks (black with a big gray "X"). Using the gray system install/restore disks from another Mac model with a PPC processor can cause problems; using the gray disks from a Mac model with an Intel processor will usually result in complete failure.
Sometimes a failed install leaves a mess on the hard drive. Boot from your original disks and use Disk Utility on the optical disk to repair your drive, then try reinstalling.
Can you post the processor speed of your eMAc? Some option for repair could vary depending on whether you have the models with USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. The processor specs are usually on a sticker on the inside of the optical drive door.

  • Can you upgrade from os x 10.4 tiger to os x10.6 snow leopard

I have just bought a 2nd had mac book pro 2006 model 2gb ram and 100gb hdd it is running tiger 10.4.11 I have realized that i need to upgrade this to be able to use the lastest i tunes etc and also to be able to sync my iphone 4. can you upgrade straight from tiger to snow leopard 10.6 or do you need to install leopard 10.5 first.
    Many Thanks

    Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
    Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
    During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.
    OS numbers and names
    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
    OS X 10.7.x - Lion
    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
    Upgrade beyond Snow Leopard
Information about upgrading Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
    Important
Check that your Mac complies with any requirements. If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of Apple pages.

  • Can I upgrade from version 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 in order to access mobileme?

Can I upgrade from version Tiger 10.4.11 to  Leopard 10.5.8 in order to access mobileme?, If so, how would I accomplish this action? I have already created a web site using iweb which came with my I-Mac (3 or 4 years old), and noe need to publish it on mobileme.

If you machine meets the minimum for Snow Leopard (10.6.x) then it would be easier to buy that. If the machine is capable I'd recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard. It's going to be difficult  and more expensive to get Leopard. Here are the minimum spec's for Snow Leopard:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMeservice; fees and terms apply.

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

    OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

  • Can't upgrade from 10.1.3 to 10.4 (Tiger on DVD)

I have an old iMac which I decided to upgrade to Tiger. I added RAM to get to 640 MB. Then I installed the 10.1.3 OS that came with the computer. Now I'm trying to upgrade it to Tiger (10.4) but the computer just spits out the disk whenever I insert it, or if I try to boot from it.
I've re-installed the original OS 10.1.3 just to make sure it's a clean install but I still have the problem. There is enough RAM, enough disk space (20 GB drive), but it won't install. I've checked the Apple site and can't find any reference to this problem. Can anyone help?
    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   640 MB RAM

    Hi Hawkeye95648,
you cannot upgrade directly from 10.1.x to 10.4. You have to perform an Erase&Install, even better reformat the hard disk and make a new install. Be aware that both will completely erase your hard disk! Make sure you have a backup of all your files and programs.
Before you start to upgrade check the minimum system requiremeents for 10.4: 10.4 "Tiger": System requirements.
If your computer is compatible (mind the need of DVD-drive and built-in firewire!) check for firmware upgrades and apply it if necessary: Firmware Upgrades.
Also make sure you update your OS 9 to at least 9.1, better 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
Omly after all these steps try to Erase&Install!

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4. Can I upgrade to v10.6 Snow Leopard? Just asking because I never upgraded to v10.5 Leopard. Are there any adverse impacts of doing this for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi jjhron;
As Stedman says you can't go to Snow Leopard with your G4 PowerBook but if your PB meets the specs for Leopard you can upgrade to that instead.

  • Can I upgrade a G3 Beige to tiger?

I am running 8.6 and need to upgrade. I purchased X Tiger. When I insert the CD it says unreadable by this Mac. Does that mean my G3 will not support Tiger? Help! Very frustrated....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As others have stated you need the CD Media to be able to upgrade to Tiger:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/
offers a Tiger Media Exchange program on its right hand side once you buy the retail Tiger disks.
Also to be able to upgrade to 10.2 or higher, there are specific firmware updates for the Beige G3s commonly included hardware:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And you need XPostfacto to get beyond 10.2.8.
You won't be able to use 8.6 in the Classic environment, so you'll also need to find a place a place that sells the retail 9 disks to upgrade to Mac OS 9.
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
has many other upgrade tips. Weigh the fact that your hard drive is probably no bigger than 10 GB, can only have 8 GB in the first partition, if larger than 8 GB, and Tiger's default installation is 3 GB:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
and that many of the drivers for third party hardware you might have connected to your machine don't exist in Tiger, I would suggest keeping your Beige G3 as a Mac OS 8.6 or 9 machine, and network it to a new X machine like a $500 Mac Mini instead of trying to upgrade your Beige G3 to Tiger. While the latter is doable, it is an exercise in putting a jet engine on a horse drawn chariot. If that's the kind of machine you want to have, that's your choice.

If I can't upgrade from 10.2.8 directly to Tiger, what do I need to do first and how?

You should be able to. Is the Tiger installer disk a retail version? Can your ibook read a DVD? You didn't indicate which iBook. Have you sufficient ram and hard drive space?

I have an older Mac ibook and have bought ipod touch and ipad - I cannot access music in itunes, 'cause it is version 10.8 - can't upgrade though, 'cause my operating system is Tiger - any suggestions besides getting new computer ?

Purchase Mac OS X 10.5 on DVD if you have an iBook G4 or Mac OS X 10.6 on DVD if you have a MacBook. Places such as Amazon sell Mac OS X 10.5, while Apple sells Mac OS X 10.6.

  • How can I upgrade from tiger 10.4.11 to Lion?

i have a Macbook and its running tiger 10.4.11, how can i upgrade it to Mac os x lion ?

You have to check to see your MacBook meets the hardware requirements: at least a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xeon processor, 2 Gb memory, though 4 GB is much better and at least 7 GB free hard drive space.
Thhen you need to buy Snow Leopard, 10.6, and install and upgrade to at least 10.6.6, then purchase from the app store Lion, 10.7 and install.
