Can't upgrade to Leopard?

Hello I just bought an iBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. However when I tried to put the gray disks in it to upgrade it would not install. Why don't the gray Leopard disks work on that laptop? Would I have to buy a universal disk of Leopard? Another question on eBay I am seeing Leopard going for much more than Snow Leopard - how come?

The pace of technology changes. iBook G4 hasn't been a new machine since 2006. That's even before Leopard came out, October 26, 2007. At least Leopard is still an upgrade for it. The advantages of having Leopard on an iBook G4 are slim compared to Tiger even. There is no Boot Camp for the iBook G4 to take advantage of, since it is not an Intel Mac. Classic is no longer available under Leopard. You can partition your iBook G4 and use the iBook G4's original installer discs to reinstall 10.4 & Classic, while having 10.5 on it. 10.5 offers better compatibility with some newer software and hardware than 10.4, but that's about it. The iBook G4 even at its time was the low end Apple notebook. Powerbooks were the high end. If you were to buy a new Mac now, the MacBook Pro is still a better deal than the MacBook and MacBook Air, even though it costs more. What you need to do when you purchase your machines is to come in here and ask questions and make sure your research leads you to the conclusions that give you the best bang for the buck. 10.5 is simply more expensive today, because it is harder to find. Supply and demand. Thankfully Apple still offers it on the phone sales of their store, even though they don't show it online. And the price is the same as it was when it was first offered. Snow Leopard is just improvements for Intel Macs to run faster and run more current software and hardware, whereas Leopard was the first Mac OS X first Mac OS X to fully take advantage of the Intel Mac's differences.
Computers depreciate in value. This has always been the case. So you really need to be better prepared for a some disappointment as more time passes by.

Do I need to reverse my thought on which to buy first?
I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

  • Can I upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my MacBook 10.5.8?

can I upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my MacBook 10.5.8?  How and were can I get snow leopard if this is possible?

The hardware requirements for 10.6 are
Snow Leopard requires 1 GB of RAM and 5 GB of available drive space.
The first generation Intel Macs, based on Intel Core Solo and Core Duo CPU, do not support 64-bit operation; all Core 2 Duo and later models do.
These models do not have graphics processors that can benefit from OpenCL:
MacBook Pro released before June 2007
    MacBook released before October 2008
    original MacBook Air
    iMacs released before March 2009
Mac mini released before March 2009
Mac Pro released before January 2008 (Jan. 2008 and later models with unsupported video cards can used the GeForce 8800 upgrade kit - Apple part no. MB137Z/A - for OpenCL support.)
If you Mac Book meets these thaen you must puchase a Snow Leopard DVD. Amazon has it listed

  • Macbook running 10.4.11/ can I upgrade to Leopard?

My Macbook is running 10.4.11. I know, I know. You don't want to know what I'm running on my ibook.
Anyway, I would like to know if I my system requirements would enable me to upgrade?
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83GHz
    Number of processors: 1
    total number of cores:  2
    L2 Cache (per processor) 2MB
    Memory : 512
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Thanks!

You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any third party Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from the Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you around $200
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.

  • I can't upgrade to Leopard

I currently have 10.4.11 installed on my Mac and am trying to upgrade to Leopard. I have a Leopard install disc but when I try to install it it searches for 10.4 on my computer and then comes back saying I don't have it. My computer is up to date on all software currently. Any ideas why this is happening?

That sounds like you have a Drop-In Leopard upgrade disc. It will not work on your computer, most likely, because it's intended for use with a MBP. I can only suggest you try the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Then try upgrading. If you cannot then you will need to purchase a retail Leopard DVD from Apple:

  • Can I upgrade Snow Leopard to Lion from a backup system?

    Hi,
This is a bit of a roundabout question so let me establish what's going on:
-I just got a new Mac Pro 6-core a few days ago, which arrived with Lion installed.
-I backed up the fresh Lion system to an external drive and downgraded to Snow Leopard to retain compatibility with certain apps.
-I imaginge somewhere down the line I will have to follow suit and upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, so....
Is there ANY way I could use my backup of the fresh Lion system to upgrade my Snow Leopard (if need be) to prevent me having to purchase Lion to upgrade Snow Leopard instead?
    Thanks for your help!
    Andrew

Is there ANY way I could use my backup of the fresh Lion system to upgrade my Snow Leopard (if need be) to prevent me having to purchase Lion to upgrade Snow Leopard instead?
Aside from the fact that it will probably not work, the point is that your license for the preinstalled Lion is only good for one machine. If you want it on any other machine, you will need to buy it. Why don't you just wait until you want to install Mountain Lion - if the terms are the same as they were for Lion,  it'll cost you $20 to update all your machines.

  • Can not Upgrade Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion due to Bootcamp

This is a long standing problem I had since I bought my Macbook Pro (a purchase now I deeply regret) almost two years ago.
I keep asking around every few months, to see if anyone came up with a good solution. I hope someone can help me this time
When I decided to buy my Macbook pro 10.6.8 with Snow Leopard, Apple said that the macbook would run smootly both in OSX and Windows due to bootcamp dual boot. I was quite happy about that, since my job requires me to use some Windows-only software and I was curious about apple products.
Unfortunately, they fail to mention (or maybe they did not foresee) that upgrading anything on both OSX or Windows would have been a true nightmare. Right off the bat I spent countless hours trying to upgrade my graphic card drivers in Windows. More problems arrived every time a new software/upgrade/driver/OS update was coming up. The final blow was the release of OSX Lion.
With a Bootcamp partition it is not possible to upgrade the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion. The reason is because a recovery system can't be created. The only solution I found so far would be:
    1) Buy two separate external HD
    2) Backup individually OSX and Windows data
    3) Re-install OS leopard
    4) Upgrade to Mountain Lion
    5) Creat a bootcamp partition
    6) re-install Windows
    7) re-install one by one any software on both OS (Matlab, Ansys, Office .... etc ... etc ... etc... [6-8 hours])
    8) Restore all data
    9) Wait for next OS release, DO IT AGAIN
Forgive me , but this is absurd. I simply refuse of waste so much time and money
Did anyone have the same problem and found a more cleaver way to solve it?
    Thanks!!!!

This was solved some time ago. See the following:
I saw a reference to an Apple bulletin on how to solve the problem if Lion rejects your install AND you have a BootCamp partition.
It seems the issue is that the space at the "bottom" of your available space when Lion installs it's partition is already occupied by BootCamp. The fix was to go into Disk Utility; Select your Hard Drive; Select Partition; Move the bottom of your main partition "up" a bit to create a space for Lion; close Disk Utility; Install Lion; once Lion is successfully installed, go back into Disk Partition and drag the bottom of your main partition back "down" to the bottom of the window.
You need to create a space about 2 GB in size.

  • I have mac pro quad can i upgrade from leopard to lion on one of the hardrives and then drag all my protools sessions into from the leopard hardrive to the lion hardrive thanks

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools,   it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

  • Can I upgrade from Leopard(OS X 10.5) to Mountain Lion(OS X 10.8)?

I have a 2 1/2 year old iMac still in the box with Leopard pre-installed. How do I get my iMac up to date with Mountain Lion? Is Mountain Lion too much for my iMac's Intel 3.06GHz Core i3 processor and 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM?

No, you don't have to bother with 10.5.8.
When you have installed Snow Leopard, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Can I upgrade to Leopard from Tiger OS x 10.4.11

I am really clueless about this. Will I loose my usage of such programs as CS4, Lightroom 2, and other graphic programs. I am just not able to keep Tiger anymore, itunes has become a problem, can'tsync my ipad and so forth. Pls advise and is it simple to do?

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*.
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710 Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings (you won't lose any passwords, etc.). Also, repair permissions before and after the install. All of you current apps will probably work, however, you may have to update some of them.

  • I have a ipod mini, i upgraded my battery, and drive to 32 GB, my itunes will not see it, and the mini only shows file pic error. I have a 10.4.11 powerbook 667 so i can't upgrade to a newer itunes, which is 4.7.1, all i want is a better battery-more song

    Hi,
I have a older ipod mini which needed a battery, so i also upgraded the drive to a 32 GB flash drive. When i did the upgrade, it saw the itunes fine, but it never loaded anything. When i unplug it it shows the folder with "!" icon, and i can't get my itunes to see it. I have a powerbook 667 mhz g4 with itunes 10.4.11, so i can't upgrade to leopard. All i wanted was a better battery and a bit more song volume. This older 4 GB will fit back in and works fine, but i'm upset i spent $37 to only fail. What am i doing wrong? itunes is 4.7.1 How can i over come this?

In Disk Utility, select the iPod (the device) in the sidebar.  So, if you see the iPod in the sidbar with a "volume" indented below the iPod, select the "device" (not the volume).
Go to the Erase tab to the right.  The choice for Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Name does not matter, because iTunes will rename it during the Restore.  Click Erase.
    it "flashed" out of itunes.
That may be an issue with the USB connection.  As a test, shut down (power off) the Mac.  Disconnect other USB devices including USB hub, except for standard USB keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  SInce this is a laptop, connect it to its power adapter, so that it's not running on battery power.
Connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the Mac.  Note if there is any difference regarding the iPod not maintaining a connection.

  • How to install upgrade snow leopard in macbook pro?

I bought a macbook pro 2011 2.2 ghz quad core i7 and would like to install snow leopard in one partition to run older software. I had the full version of os leopard, but can't install in the new macbook pro to upgrade to snow leopard. I can't upgrade snow leopard in my power G5 either because it needs intel cpu. Is there away to upgrade leopard to snow leopard in macbook pro 2011? I have not bought the snow leopard upgrade yet. Thank for your help.

See the bottom of this user tip to determine if Snow Leopard can be installed on your MacBook Pro:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If it can, you'll need to find out the version of Snow Leopard installer that was available at the time that machine was released based on the age of the machine.
    Snow Leopard releases are here:
    10.6.6 on January 6, 2011
    10.6.7 on May 4, 2011
    10.6.8 on June 23, 2011
