I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion but the directions say to install it though the app store. I already have iTunes 10.6.1. Please help.
I think I need the app store installed (not under applications in Finder).
Then I can download Mountain Lion.
My iPhone has version 6.0.

You would need either 10.6.6 or above to upgrad to mountain lion. However, keep in mind if you're stuck on Leopard, it's usually unlikely your hardware will support Mountain Lion anyway. And even more unlikely to support the features such as mirroring, etc.

I have a mac mini with sufficient ram for the mountain lion OS however, I am unable to determine if the machine was created in early 2009. Is there a way to make sure my machine will take the upgrade without purchasing the operating system first?

First, you'll have to determine if your iMac can run Mountain Lion at all. See:

If it can - and it would have to be a mid-2007 model; no earlier iMac can run Mountain Lion - then you'll have to get the iMac to Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. From there, assuming your system meets the rest of the system requirements, you can upgrade to Mountain Lion through the Mac App Store.

I never upgraded any further than Snow Leopard because I thought my MacBook Pro couldn't, I'm now thinking I made a mistake. I have been reading some of the posts on here and it seems that if the Mac is mid/late 2007 it can be upgraded. I have found out through my serial number that it was made in March 2007 obviously bought a little later than that but it is boarder line on the recommendation. These are the specs for the macbook, if anyone can put my mind at ease it would be helpful, i just need to know if upgrading is really worth my while. I am American but live in Italy so have missed an update or two. When I went to the Mac store in the States this summer they told me if I could work well with this outdated version, to leave as is as I had missed two updates.
