Can't use airport for iphone if macbook is using ethernet cable

I recently switched to a new internet provider and noticed that downloads are faster for my macbook if it is connected by ethernet to my router. However in order to use the ethernet connection, I have to turn off airport in system preferences. When I do that I can't connect to the internet with my iphone. Is there a way to keep my computer connected by cable and still have airport working? I'm using a Comcast box to D link router to Original Airport wireless set up.

That shouldn't be. You must have some sort of configuration problem. You don't really need to turn off AirPort in System Preferences. All you need to do is to reorder the connection items to put the Ethernet item first.
However, it doesn't make sense that turning off the AirPort circuitry of your MacBook would prevent your iPhone from connecting. I"ll presume that it's the router that's creating the wireless network and that you're not doing anything odd like sharing an Internet connection from the MacBook's AirPort function. Is everything configured to use DHCP?

There should be.

Please explain what you mean by "Original Airport wireless set up".

  • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

Can I create books for iPhone using iBooks Author?

There is a new $5 iBooks Creator app in iOS app store for the iPad.
The output looked pretty good for an iPad app.
There is a video on how to use it to give you an idea of how easy it is.
It creates ePub 2 whihc can be read on all platforms with an ePub reader except Amazon Kindle whihc forbids such things.
You can run the ePub through Calibre and get MOIB for Kindle which works for me.
I have done thirty or forty conversions so far.

I'm sure you can, however I am not aware of any companies.  Consider addining them to your homeowners/renters insurance if possible.

My TV has only 2 HDMI conections that are all ready in use for Directv and the Blueray. Can I use composed cables to conect Apple TV

I'm going to take a guess and say that if your TV has 2 HDMI ports, it also has a component input (5 wire).   I'm also going to guess that either your DirecTv or your Blueray has a component output option.  If I had this setup, I would put my DTV on the component option and use the open HDMI port for the ATV2.
I doubt you will be able to tell the difference on your DTV.  Most of the stores that demo HD use component wiring on their store models.  The only downside is that you may be giving up the highest sound (Dobly 5.1 or whatever they call it.)
Or you could just go to switching the HDMI cords from your BluRay to the ATV2 depending on which one you are watching.  I think I use my BluRay about 5% or less of my viewing time.  If I "tossed", I wouldn't shed a tear.

  • As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule, or do we need their router to connect to the time capsule?

As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule or do we need the Verizon router to connect to time capsule?

The Time Capsule is indeed a wireless router with simultaneous dual band capability...and a hard drive for backup purposes. You can use that to your advantage if you configure the Time Capsule as I suggested in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule will provide a 802.11n 5 GHz band and a 802.11n/g/b compatible 2.4 GHz band to allow virtually any device to connect to the network.
I suppose that you could also use the "g" wireless network provided by the Verizon router as a "guest" network or something similar if you really do need another wireless network.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule as the main router on the network....that's a question for Verizon. But even if you might be able to do this, I'm sure it is not supported by Verizon, so you would be on your own in the event of any Internet connection difficulties on your service.
And, since the Time Capsule does not have a built in modem....you would still need to add a separate modem to the installation anyway.
That's why my suggestion is to use the Verizon device as the "modem" and let the Time Capsule provide the dual band wireless network and of course, handle the Time Machine backups.

  • Can connect over wlan, but not using ethernet cable between mac and extreme

Hi, I have a brand new Airport Extreme base station. Wireless LAN works well and both my wife's and my Mac can connect to the internet. When I connect the ethernet cable to my macbook, it does not connect to Extreme. Is this a feature or a required change in the setups?

On your MacBook, open System Preferences-> Network preference pane and ensure that Ethernet is enabled.

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

I have tried to turn of the wi-fi but that doesn't work either. I think it could be a something to do with the internet provider because virginmedia comes up on the webpage. This is what comes up:
    Wireless Setup
    WGR614V9
    V1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK
    Wireless Setup

    any ideas?!?
