Can't use Airport Management Utility

I can't get the Airport Management Utility to work on my new MBP. It works fine on the G4 desktop, but when I try and run it on the MBP, I get an error message.
"The Airport Management Utility requires Airport 3.4 or later. Click update to check for newer software." There are two buttons in the window, Update and OK. I've clicked update and nothing appears in Software update.
To hedge my bets I've tried installing the version that I have on the G4 desktop with the same error. I've also searched Apple's knowledge base and discussion boards to see if there are reports of similar problems, but I can't find any.
I've also updated the firmware on the Airport Express to the newest version. I don't know how to update the firmware for the airport express card in my MBP. Here's the data from that from System Profiler.
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 0.1.27
Current Wireless Network: 301 Network
Wireless Channel: 1
Any thoughts?

  • PowerBook Can't Run Airport Management Utility

I'm still trying to find out why my PowerBook can't run Airport Management Utility, even though all of my other Airport software is up to date. When I try to launch the utility, it gives the message that it "requires Airport 3.4 or later", which I do already have.
Below is a description of my latest effort, followed by my original question, which has been archived in this discussion group.
I created and logged in via a new user account, but I still got the same 'requires Airport 3.4 or later' message from Airport Management Utility. I took it from this that the problem was not related to user preferences.
I then used Spotlight to search the Library folder. The only airport pref I found there was com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, located in this path: Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
The computer would not let me move this to the desktop, but copied it instead. I can open that copy in TextEdit, but if I double click on it, it actually launches in OmniOutlner. A check via "Get Info" shows that it is set to "Open with: OmniOutliner" from the drop down menu in the Get Info box.
If you open this plist in OmiOutliner, you find the information I've listed below. It appears to show that the file does know the Airport software version is "5" and not less than 3.4:
    • Disconnect on logout 0
    • AllowEnable 0
    ▶ Default 802.1X Configurations
    • InterferenceRobustness 0
    • Require Admin for network 0
    change
    • JoinMode 1
    • Always remember new networks 1
    ▶ List of known networks
    • Version 5
    • Require Admin for IBSS creation 1
    • Fallback Preference 0
The only other items in the Library folder with "airport" in the name are both in the Receipts folder: AirportTI2005-001.pkg and AirportConfigApps.pkg.
I'd welcome your thoughts on this.
    My original posting was:
I have the newest PowerBook G4 , purchased this fall with Mac OS X 10.4.3 and AirPort Update 2005-001 installed.
When I try to run Airport Management utility I get the message : " "The Airport Management Utility requires Airport 3.4 or later. Click Update to check for newer software." While Airport Management Utility will not run on my PowerBook, it does run on my iMac with 10.3.9.
    I've tried:
-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001" but it didn't solve the problem.
-installing "AirPort 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.2", thinking that if it were not needed, the installer would not run. It did install, but that did not solve the problem.
-re-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001", which did install a second time, but did not solve the problem. (I thought perhaps the installer for this update wouldn't run a second time.)
Does anyone know of a solution, or does Apple need to update Airport Management Utility?
(I've cross-posted this in the Airport discussion area, but I also wanted to check with others who recently bought the same PowerBook.)
    Thanks for your help.

"OK, I've been following this thread since February and I think I got this thing figured out. Joseph Jordan pointed to the right direction and I did some more digging.
I had the same problem as most posters here:
    - ALL 10.3 machines had AirPort Management Utility working but,
    - NOT ALL 10.4 machines had AirPort Management Utility working.
In my case, no 10.4 computer had AMU working (updated from 10.3 or fresh install of 10.4, Intel or PowerPC, even brand new MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4 out of the box), EXCEPT one xserve that was updated from 10.3.
As I said before, Joseph Jordan pointed to the right direction, the file/folder AirPortConfig.framework in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ is missing.
It seems that AirPortConfig.framework was installed when AirPort 4.1 was installed. AirPort 4.2 installs Apple80211.framework only. I think...
In some cases, AirPortConfig.framework is there (updated machines), but the file AirPortConfig is missing in AirPortConfig.framework/Versions/A/
as well as the symbolic links to it and to other folders.
    Solution:
The easiest way is to copy the whole AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
If you already have AirPortConfig.framework and AMU is not working, move it to the trash or somewhere else.
I found AirPortConfig.framework in the "AirPort Extreme Software Installation" CD (CD version 4.1 2Z691-5219-A):
    1. Open the CD
    2. Control-click "AirPort for Mac OX X v10.3" and select Show original
    3. Control-click "AirPortSW.pkg" and select Show Package Contents
    4. Open Contents
    5. Drag Archive.pax.gz to the Desktop
    6. Double-click Archive.pax.gz to unarchive the file
    7. AirPortConfig.framework is in ~/Desktop/Archive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    8. Drag AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ You will be asked to authenticate.
AMU should work at this point.
Alternatively, download "AirPort 4.1 Update.dmg" from
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
and follow from step 3. above.
This solution seems to work on both Intel and PowerPC machines.
Computers tested: Power Mac G5, Powerbook G4 12" and 17", MacBook Pro.
IMPORTANT: I do not know if this solution breaks anything. CAVEAT EMPTOR!"

  • Airport Management Utility

Is there any way to assign a Client Name to the MAC Address Airport Management Utility displays?
Is there any way to determine if a Client is connected 802.11B vs 802.11G?
    Thanks
iBook G4, iMac FP 800mhz, iMac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Airport Extreme/Express

And better yet, a way to turn individual clients on or off. There's no way to do that is there?
    No
You can enable the 'access list' feature and list the allowed clients. But this is easily fooled by MAC address cloning.

  • AirPort Management Utility doesn't support "n" Extremes?

Whenever I try to add a new Apple AirPort to the AirPort Management Utility (not the AirPort Utility for configuration) the application quits. I use it to manage losts of AirPorts and need this to work.
Any idea if there will be an update to this software to support the new AirPorts?
    AirPort Extreme

As previous poster correctly stated, you must use the new Airport Utility which is (currently at least) available only on the CD that came with your AEBS(n). Note that there is an update to this software available after you have installed Airport Utility. You CANNOT install the update without first having installed the initial version of Airport Utility.
I doubt Airport Admin Utility will ever be updated; it will be replaced by Airport Utility at some time. Airport Utility works with all the older ABS antecedents and Airport Express as well as the newer AEBS(n).

  • Airport Management Utility on new MacBook Pro does not see base station

I have an old "flying saucer" Airport base station. I
recently started using a new MacBook Pro. Airport
connection is fine, Airport Admin Utility works normally,
but Airport Client Monitor 1.0 shows blank graphs and
Airport Management Utility 1.0 does not "see" the
base station. I don't know if the problem is the
change to Tiger, to Intel, or to AE card. MacStumbler
    and friends also are "blind".

Try rebooting the airport, then going to airport utilities and go thru the set up proceedure following the prompts.  Also go to system prefernces in location select automatic.

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.

I currently have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router with windows computers.  How can I add wifi to the network for use with ipad?  Can I use AirPort Express?

Yes. You can directly connect an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) using an Ethernet cable. The AXn would then just need to be configured as a bridge to allow the D-Link to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients connected to either router.
In this configuration, the AXn would broadcast a wireless network for your wireless network clients to connect to.

That means,i can not get UserTransaction from EJBContext.
    Is that true?

Yes this is the requirement of the specs. Your ejb code generator should give you the error if you use usertransaction.

How can I use Airport Express (1st Generation) with OS X Mavericks?

1st Generation AirPort Express will work fine with Mavericks.
Are you sure that you have a 1st Gen Express?
Check the model number on the side of the Express. 1st Gen is A1264.
If you see A1084 or A1088, these are much older versions of the Express that were sold long before Apple began to use the Generation naming with "n" wireless devices in 2007.
Mavericks will not support the A1084 or A1088. Use another Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC if you need to administer the older Express.

Can I use the Disk Utility Application to backup Bootcamp that has Windows 7 on it?  If I install a new blank drive, I would like to know that using Time Machine I can get the MAC OS back and using the Disk Image Utility I can restore Bootcamp with Windows 7.

    NO.
You have to use Windows or a Windows utility.
There are programs that will clone an entire drive (sector) as well.
DU does not though. Paragon does support Boot Camp.

  • Airport Management Utility will not run

After having setup a new system computer for a while I have been updating some of my favorite utilities. One of them being the Airport Management Utility (not the admin utility). After finally finding the disk image for the Airport utlities on Apple's site I downloaded and installed. When I try to run the Airport Management Utility I get an error message saying "The Airport Management Utility requires Airport 3.4 or later. Click Update to check for newer software."
When I click update it says that I am up do date. I am running Mac OS X 10.3.9 with all software update recommended updates. I'm trying to figure out what is wrong and it's driving me crazy. This is pretty much a default install of OS X 10.3 and Office 2004
    Any help is appreciated

Download and install Airport 4.1 from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
There is also an Airport 4.2 update, which I recommend you do not install since it adds little additional functionality, at the risk of causing serious problems with your Mac's Airport interface.
