Can't use certain characters as bullets

I'm using CS3 and am trying to define a new paragraph style for bulleted lists. The bullet I want to use is a character in Arno Pro (specifically a flower). I go to the Bullets and Numbering section of the Paragraph Style Options dialog, set Bullets as the list type, and then under the Bullet Character section I choose Add . . . to select the character. The character shows up fine in the Add Bullets dialog box, but once I add it, it shows up in the Bullet Character window as a simple black bullet, identical to the default one (but without the little red u underneath); it even has the same GID and Unicode number. If I say OK, it also appears in the text as this simple black bullet.
This isn't happening with all characters in the font; letters and punctuation work just fine (if I for some reason wanted to use them as bullets). It's just a certain set of curlicues and leaves and bullets. And I think it's got to be related to the fact that this whole set has the same Unicode number and are all given as having the name BULLET; it seems that the program is only looking at this identical Unicode number and not at those fields that differentiate the characters from each other. And since this simple black bullet also has this Unicode number (2022) the program just assumes I mean that one. But I have no idea what to do about that (or if I'm even correct about this, as I know very little about Unicode and GIDs and who knows what else). Anyone have any suggestions?

It works like this: all characters ('glyphs') in a font have a Glyph ID. That's because the Glyph ID is simply the index number of that glyph in the font file.
But not all characters have a Unicode value -- this is because a font may contain characters for special purposes, such as small capitals or ligatures, or alternative characters (such as for your bullet), or simply because the characters do not exist in Unicode (the Math section in Cambria Math, for example).
InDesign differentiates between 'any character in any font' and 'a certain glyph in a certain font' because the former can only be coded in Unicode, while the latter depends entirely on the font certaine. The little red 'u' you see is actually a good thing here, it means the character is, or should be, available in any other font. When you don't see the red 'u', the character comes from a certain font (and thus can be any glyph).
This is where InDesign gets it wrong.
If you add a glyph to the bullet list from the current default font, InDesign assumes it's a Unicode glyph (you're just selecting any old Bullet character) -- and it "forgets" to check if the character you selected is, in fact, a regular Unicode glyph, or if you selected it from the non-Unicode "any glyph at all" section of the little character map.
Fortunately, you can circumvent this behavior by tricking InDesign. Simply first set another default font than the intended one, then add the bullet/ornament from the other font as needed -- InDesign will then correctly store it as both font + glyph in the Bullet list.

  • Can't use certain characters in java programs.

    For some reason I cannot use characters like: " ^ ~ | " in java programs.
    I can type them in a terminal and then paste them into the program, but cannot type them inside the java program - It's has been like that in every java application I have used. It only works when typing them in a applet running on a browser.

  • Ipad Pinyin Bug- apps crash and abort using certain characters

    I seem to have a serious problem using the Chinese Simplified Pinyin on the Ipad 2. Typing certain characters causes whatever app I am typing in to close on me, bringing me home. Because of this, writing emails and notes is nearly impossible. It works on every app, so I can't write my emails in a notepad and then copy it onto Mail. My "blacklist" of common characters that trigger this problem include at least 10 common characters now. This is unacceptable- it is almost impossible to write Chinese on this thing. I have tried everything (restarting, etc.) except a complete restore to manufacturing settings.
    Is anyone else having a similar problem? Are there any fixes available?

    There is really nothing you can do to fix things beyond a reset of your device.  Report it to Apple and make sure you always tell people what iOS version you are using, since it is a software issue and they need to know what software is involved.

  • How can I use ASCII Characters on the iPad?

    I have an iPad (1) and use iOS 4.3.5. Is there an easier Way of using ASCII Characters than having to use the "copy-Paste" procedure? If not, can we expect to see the feature of entering the ASCII code straight through the standard keyboard soon?

    You need to give some details about what it is you want to do, because ASCII Characters are what are already on the keyboard.  It is non-ASCII that you might need to copy/paste.

    I think you can be sure that Apple is never going to include a feature in iOS that has you input special characters by typing in numbers like Windows does it.  Mac's have always used a different approach.

  • I can't use certain programs with Yosemite

    I have the Adobe CS6 installed on my computer and they all worked fine with Snow leopard, but the moment I got Yosemite and tried to open After Effects I get this message:
    "You can’t use this version of the application “Adobe After Effects CS6” with this version of OS X.
    You have “Adobe After Effects CS6” 11.0."
    Every other program I tried on Adobe CS6 works fine but After Effects will not open. I tried to uninstall and reinstall it but I get the same message.
    After Effects is my second most used program on the Creative Suite, how do I fix it?
    An answer would be very helpful Apple. Please and thank you.

  • Can't use certain keys in Global Address Search

    When trying to run a Global Address Search that starts with a letter that's on the numeric keypad (E, R, T, D, etc.) I cannot get it to search by the letter.  E.g., if I press "D" it searches for "4".  Pressing the Option (aka Orange) key doesn't toggle it to alpha mode.  I can search using letters that aren't on the numeric keypad just fine.  And if I my search starts with a letter that's not on the numeric keypad (e.g. "L") I can choose either "D" or "4" as the next letter, e.g., if I press "D" I see "4".  If I then press "L" the 4 changes do a "d" and the search shows "dl".  But if I erase the "l" the "d" switches back to "4".
    Bottom line: I can't choose "D" as the first character in my search.  I have to launch Contacts, then search.  I'm on WebOS 1.4.
    Robert

    Hello.
    It really doesn't work that way. When you type "D", the phone shows a "4", but it searchs for "D". There is no way to distinguish when you want to make a call by number from when you want to search, so the phone gives you both options.
    Try to enter a "Dave Martin" contact in your phone and search him by pressing "DL", "DA" or "MA".

    I expected that the quotes could be replaced by escape-characters by 'filter(invoer)' but this does not work.
    Is there a generic way to show these characters?

    I don't understand why but this filter solved the problem:
    function filter( invoer) {

    return retour;

  • I sporadically can't use certain Google features (Gmail, Documents, Calendar, etc.). The error I always get is "SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long"

When I use the history (or the search bar) it occasionally works.

  • Can't Use Certain Earbuds on My Macbook

    I recently bought a pair of Skullcandy in-ear earbuds (in-ear monitors for all your audiophiles), the Dub. I love Skullcandy. However I ran into an issue using them on my Macbook. I have Skullcandy's Icon 2 (headphones) and Apple's earbud with remote. Those two function correctly and when plugged into my Macbook I hear sound through them. However when I plug in the Dub the sound is still coming out of the interal speakers. I have also experienced this problem with the non-remote Apple earbuds my friend had. Their earbuds did the same thing. It appears my Macbook is selectively choosing which headphones/earbuds will function correctly. Is this a hardware problem cause it doesn't look like a software problem.

  • Can't use certain filters- "problem with the filter module interface"

    Hello,
    I frequently use the BPelt Flatten and Multifill plugins and they have always worked perfectly until today. Now I get the following error: "Could not complete the [Multifill/Flatten] command because of a problem with the filter module interface."
    I use Photoshop CS6 Extended with the Creative Cloud membership, and just recently updated to version 13.1.1 x64. I believe this may be related, as the plugins worked before the update and nothing else has changed.  Any recommendations on how to fix this? Is it possible to undo  the update?

    Usually this means a bug in the third party plugin that you are using.

  • Where can I get/buy more text bullets for pages?

    The text bullets for iWork Pages are nice, but I would like many more choices.
    Where can I get/buy more text bullets?
    I have done some searching on the web and I am finding it very difficult to find any graphics stores for text bullets.
    I would really appreciate if someone has some suggestions.

    Any character from any font can be used as a text bullet. I suggest that you look at the "special" characters you already have available in many of the fonts that came with your computer. The Character Viewer applet is very useful for this.

    And if I type "java Oper" (It compiled normally and worked on my school computer) it gives me this error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Oper
    It works everywhere but on my computer...
    Oh, and I have Java Builder 3 University Edition installed. When I use that to compile + run my program, it works perfectely... I just can't use "java" in command prompt. I have a Windows ME.
    Another note, this may be related: I can't use certain Java applets on my computer, like the IRC applets for example. I tried it on both Netscape 7.01 and Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106. It displays the same kind of error, the Exception in thread "..." java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ... .
    And I've already tried uninstalling + reinstalling. Any other suggestions?

    start -> run -> cmd
    (if it doesn't open command prompt, then try command instead of cmd)
    once you have reached command prompt, then you change to some empty directory where you would like to create java or class files. (use cd command for that)
    once you have reached that directory, type: notepad Hello.java
    (it should open notepad, and it should prompt you a question if you want to create file Hello.java (since it didn't excist) ... click yes)
    in notepad type the following:class Hello {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
      System.out.println("Hello");
    }once you have written that into notepad, then click File and choose Save from there.
    now you may close your notepad.
    now go back to that command prompt and type in command dir Hello.*
    it should lis you all Hello.* files, and Hello.java should be one of these.
    now, when you have seen that in your current directory a Hello.java does excist, you may type javac Hello.java
    if it does compile whitout any errors then everything is OK so far.
    type again dir Hello.*
    now you should see two files, Hello.java and Hello.class
    if you now saw that Hello.class was in the current directory, you may type the following command: java Hello
    it should display a String "Hello" on your screen.
    if it doesn't work, then you have problem with java not working from commandline (some classpaths are wrong or unset or smthng similar)
    if you suspect that something doesn't work, then always test it with simplest task.

  • Can a GPO block certain characters from being used in filenames, for SharePoint compatibility?

    What I'm wondering is: Is it possible to use GPOs to set up a prohibition on certain characters for saved file names, so that when someone attempts to save a file to a server share, it gives them a dialog box along the lines of "That name uses
    invalid characters, please call it something else and try again"?
    The reason I ask is we've recently started using Office 365, and our server is set up to sync our office shares folder with our SharePoint Online site, so that people can access our documents from outside the office.  The problem is, the Office Uploader
    keeps running into files saved with invalid characters (invalid for SharePoint, anyway - things like pound sign, colon, etc).  I know there was a thread about a script that can go through after the fact and truncate file names, but I'm afraid this would
    confuse our users, and if possible I'd like to deal with the problem preemptively.  I'm pretty disappointed in SharePoint right about now.
    As it stands right now, if a user saves a file with an invalid character, it won't even warn them.  It'll save to the share, but simply fail to upload to the SharePoint site, and when the user goes looking for it online later, they'll be sorely disappointed.
    Some more details/background: I'm the sole (volunteer) IT guy at a small nonprofit that serves adults with disabilities, both in and out of the office.  We have about 13 computers (mostly laptops) with Win 8.1Enterprise and 28 or so employees.
    We have a Win 2012 SBS that acts as domain controller and hosts a share that's available to all employees.  We have Office 365 E2 for NonProfits, and I've synced a Sharepoint library with our network share using SkyDrive Pro.
    We're trying to set up an auxiliary office in the next town over so clients don't have to travel all the way to our part of the county, so it's suddenly a lot more important that we get our documents online and synced up.
    If anyone has any ideas, I'd be extremely grateful!  Thanks!!

    Hi,
    As far as I know and as suggested by Mahdi, there is no such Group Policy settings which can help us to achieve this.
    However, as also suggested by Mahdi, we can ask for help in the following scripting forum to see whether some scripts can help achieving this.
    The Official Scripting Guys Forum
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/scriptcenter/en-US/home?forum=ITCG
    If we can get such a script, we can use Group Policy to deploy the script to clients.
