Can't use OSX, stuck at startup screen

I have last year's Macbook White, 2.13 Ghz, 160 GB, 2 GB RAM, and it has quite a problem. A few days ago, the Macbook was perfectly fine, but yesterday, when I turned it on, the chime would come, and the startup screen with the round 'loading' sign and the apple logo would come. However, that screen stays like that for a minute, then another, very similiar screen comes. The loading sign is still there, but where the apple logo was, now there is a 'no smoking' type round cross sign, which stays there. OS X doesnt boot up, the screen just stays like that forever. I CAN, however, use windows. Please give me some advice on what to do.

Archive and install OS X.

but some people say that airparrot can though it does not rely on the gpu for realtime encoding so performance would be worse
with the next version of osx you are suppose to be able to do what you ask though

  • Macbook Pro stuck at startup screen.

I've ran Disk Utility, there were problems that were fixed, but it's fine now (I've ran it again to double check), and I've ran Apple HHardware Test and I received" no trouble found".
But everytime I try to start up it gets stuck on the grey startup screen with the apple and the oration under it. So I'm at a loss at this point.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

System files are missing or damaged so you need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you have an earlier version of OS X installed then do this instead:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Completed Mac to Mac Migration.  Now new iMac is Stuck at Startup Screen.

I did a mac to mac migration, both iMacs running Lion.  Got the message that it was completed successfully.  Unfortunately none of my apps or files would open.  I rebooted, hoping that would help.  Now the new mac is stuck on the startup screen and won't go past it.  Help!
It took three attempts for the migration to work.  I have never had this much trouble with any of my macs.
I feel like I'm using a PC at this point.  What can I do to fix this?

I would restart the new mac from the recovery partition and restore it to new.
The recovery partition is invisible. If you restart, wait for chime, press and hold OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. You should then see the Recovery HD.
To boot directly into the Recovery HD restart, wait for chime, press and hold COMMAND-R.
    Then repeat the Migration.
How did you performed the migration before: From old to new with new as target or to new with the old as target ?
Try to do it in another way.
Do it wit FW800 or if possible with Tunderbolt.

  • Stuck on startup screen; locked firmware (password) won't allow CD Boot...?

When the system began to act strange, I tried to install with a 10.5 Update/Install Disk. When the software wouldn't install ("You can not install this software on this disk."), I restarted the drive, but nothing happened. I ran Disk Utility from the 10.5 CD. I repaird the HD, and restored the permissions by pressing the "Repair", and "Repair Permissions" buttons. When it indicated that the hard drive was "OK", (using the 10.5 Install Disk,) I set the firmware password locking it to keep others from starting with a CD.
Now, the startup screen will not display any users; the blue "load" indicator will not complete, and appears to be stuck. First I tried holding down the "C" key, but it wouldn't start from the CD. Then I tried re-setting the PBG4 to factory settings by holding down the option, command, "P" and "R" keys, but it won't make the second "reboot" sound, and continues with the blue "start-up" indicator. (I'm in real trouble, because I'm supposed to have my College Papers ready by this weekend, but they're stuck on my computer.) Does anyone have any sollutions??? Pleeeeeease help; I'l l b u y y o u s o m e c a n d y!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Usually you get a 'can't install on this disk' when you try to use a gray-faced system disk from another system, like MacBook or iMac or other non-Powerbook. Those disks are locked to the systems they are distributed with. The only way to upgrade to 10.5 is with a black-faced retail disk.
Have you tried starting the system holding the alt/option key down? That should prompt you for the firmware password, then give give you a choice of device to boot from.
You didn't indicate why your system was beginning to act strange, so don't know if that has any bearing on your current start issues.

  • Stuck on startup screen after 10.9.1 update

so, my app store had been bugging me to do updates for about a month and I finally did them today.  Then, Google Chrome kept crashing every time I tried to open it so I rebooted into recovery mode and ran the disc verification.  It got stuck on the startup screen, so I tried to restart it again... got stuck on the startup screen again... went back into recovery mode and repaired permissions and now it's been stuck on the startup screen for 1/2 an hour.  Help??

    Jamie,
Since your wife knows how to use the installer DVD for maintenance, ask her to do a "Repair disk" on the startup drive. (Repairing permissions is something else.) However, also ask her if by 'no effect' she means repairing permissions could not be done or reported no permissions problems with the drive. If the latter, it is good news in that it at least means Disk Utility found a valid system to check permissions on. Anyway, let us know the results of the repair disk step, particularly any messages about repairs that were attempted.
It is unfortunate that you don't have some files backed up but hopefully we can get your Mac back up to speed without losing anything. If they are highly critical files, you may want to consider waiting until they can be offloaded to another Mac using Target Disk Mode or similar techniques, since any write to the drive has some (if generally very small) chance of overwriting data.
Be aware that there have been some reports of problems associated with certain scanners & external drives, & not just with this update. I have no firsthand experience with this, so I can't tell you exactly what they are, but I suggest you disconnect them until the problem is resolved.
Hopefully, these three steps will get you closer to a fully-functioning, bootable Mac, but either way, keep us informed.
Oh, one other bit of advice in the meantime: if you haven't already, give an authentic, Chicago deep crust pizza a try before you leave. I like Pizzeria Uno or Due, but there are others.

  • Stuck in startup screen for ever

    Hi,
I have a MacBook running Snow Lepard. Recently it would not pass the startup screen and stucks there forever.
I have tried used to boot off from CDs (both Snow Lepard and the OS before) and it did not boot from the CDs. This was not an issue before I upgraded to Snow Lepard and I can always repair the HD or reinstall the OS.
I also tried all the boot options and found out the only key it response is the "option" key and send me to a login screen but the password does not work.
Please share your experience if you have encountered the similar issue.
    Thanks!

Startup while holding the Command+S keys. Hold those keys until you see a black screen with white text. Allow that scrren to load fully, then type fsck -yf and hit return. Allow it to run til you see the message "The system has been modified" or "The disk appears to be okay". Then type reboot and hit return.

  • Itouch stuck on startup screen-please help!

My itouch has been stuck on the startup screen since last night; first I tried letting it charge, and after 30 minutes with no results I unplugged it, let the battery drain completely and started again. After another hour of charging with no results I tried restarting it, again with no results-upon restarting it returned to being stuck on the startup screen. This morning I tried letting it drain again and it became extremely hot until it turned off again. A while ago I plugged it into my computer, hoping to reset and restore it, but it is now, once again, stuck on the startup screen. It's not even being recognized by iTunes or my computer. My ipod is NOT jailbroken btw. Please help!! I don't think I can go on much longer without my music lol

What do you mean by startup screen?
    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is likely in order since the hotness tends to indicate as hardware problem.

  • Macbook pro model A1278 wont boot osx stuck at grey screen

I have had my mbp for about 3 years now and has worked great.  Just today i got home from work and when i opened the macbook which was already running I was in OSX but it was frozen with colored wheel spinning.  I had never experiened this before but I didnt think too much of it and held down the power button to reset it.  Now i am stuck at the grey screen with the Apple Logo and spinning wheel and cant get back into OSX at all.  So i started googling (on another computer obviously) and tried:
    1.  boot in safe mode.  Didnt work, still stuck at grey screen
    2.  boot in safe mode with "commd-shift-v" to see info.  stuck in "dos" looking screen. see pic at bottom.
    3.  tried resetting VRAM w/ "commd-opt-p-r".  did not work, still stuck at grey screen.
    4.  got original OSX install DVD.  Was able to boot to disc and make it to disk utilities.  went to repair and got error "unable to unmount disk"
    5.  ran "repair permissions" and completed that.  ran "verify disk" and got green "disk ok" message.  then re-ran repair and got same "unable to unmount disk"
so know i am worried.  my main concern is the 80 GB of music I have on this computer (and dont currently have backed-up {que back-up lectures}) and my pictures.  Does it sound possible to recover music and pics based on this little bit of info?  Im willing to take it to the Apple store and pay the price if it sounds like I can recover it.  I am pretty computer savy but am reluctanct to just start trying anything that could lose my music/pics.  I cant try just deleteing and restoring OSX to factory settings and losing all that music/pics.
so...what is best approach to access and back up these files myself?  I do have another macbook with a firewire connection but am not familiar with that process.  I will get a external HD immediatly (now ofcourse)...can I backup my files from disc utility?
    Thanks for any help.
