i am unable to repair the volume as well. i can verify and repair permissions.
as a result, i can't use boot camp assistant to parition my volume.

Hi Jeffrey
The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive. You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart, then hold down the C key until you hear the chime.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to First Aid and navigate to the Disk Utilities application.
Select the start up drive, then you click on Repair Disk .
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
Then run Repair Permissions.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.

  • Verifying and repairing in Snow Leopard not working

    Hi everyone.
I have a white MacBook (3,1) running Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.8.  My computer was running extremely slowly so I opened the Disk Utility to try to repair it.  Disk Utility told me I needed to run my Snow Leopard installation disk and verify disk permissions from there.  I did so, and even though the estimated time said 27 minutes, it ran overnight, generated a long list of broken permissions, and nothing else happened.  I rebooted and now I could select "Repair Disk Permissions", so I did so, and again, the estimated time was 25 minutes but nothing happened.
From browsing the support community I see that this is a known issue with Snow Leopard.  What can I do to verify and repair permissions so I can then verify and repair my disk?  I would appreciate any information whatsoever.
    Thanks,
    Christine

    Try it this way:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.1 - Disk Permission Verify and Repair Functions Are Broken

Machine: Mac mini with 1.66 MHz Intel Core Duo,
OS: Mac OS X Version 10.5.1
Note: Upgraded to Leopard from version 10.4.10
When using Disk Utility to attempt to verify or repair the permissions of the internal hard drive volume containing the OS, the progress meter stops moving and the verify or repair operation does not finish. The Console log file reveals the problem:

Note that the OS version is incorrectly reported as 10.4.10 in the console log. This was the version that I was using PRIOR to installing Leopard. The version I'm actually using is 10.5.1.

After a second look, the console messages do not relate to the problem I reported. They relate to another lockup problem I'm having after moving from Tiger to Leopard.
Nevertheless, the description of the problems I'm having with the Verify and Repair functions of the Disk Utility is accurate. I had absolutely no problems when I was using Tiger.

You appear to have two issues: 1) a hard drive that is not working properly and 2) files you wish to recover.
Re 1) you need to answer Kappy's questions.
Re 2) does the drive load and can you see your photo files? If so can you copy them to another drive?
Do you not have a backup of the photo files?

  • Verifying and Repairing Permissions on Mac OS X 10.5 giving many errors

I am having a problem with verifying and repairing my permissions. I first noticed this yesterday and thought it was some kind of application conflict so I wiped my HDD via zero data and reinstalled OS 10.5 then upgraded to OS 10.5.1. Without installing any applications other than those that were installed via the CD and the update, I rechecked my "Repair Permissions" and got the following:

  • Unable to verify and repair disk, with my new 10.5

I'm trying to work out some problems on my older G4 desktop (with lamp bass). I upgraded recently from 10.3 to 10.5 (bought new box with the 10.5 disk). I have 750 dramm.
I wish to verify and repair the disk. I can't figure out h ow with the new 10.5 disk I have.
In the past, I would boot up my computers with the 10.3 and 10.4 disks (I've had both) with "C" key down, and then I could use the utility.
That does not work with this new Leopard disk. Won't boot up with the "C" (or the "option" key for that matter).
That normal? And how do I repair disk for the install disk?
    thx..
    Jon

    Jon,
The Leopard disk works (or is supposed to work) just like previous versions of OS X. In other words, booting the G4 while holding down the "C" key should boot the machine to the installer.
A couple of things might get in the way of this happening, though. First, let's establish that your G4 meets the minimum requirements for Leopard. For a G4, the important item would be at least an 867 MHz processor (if I'm not mistaken). Are we still "go?"
Also, let's eliminate the "duh!!!" possibility of a third-party or wireless keyboard, which may not be supported by the startup manager.
If you meet the minimum requirements, and you're using a standard, wired USB keyboard, your PRAM may be causing an issue. This happens, sometimes. To clear this up, first flush out the PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R at startup, and continue to hold it until you hear a total of four startup chimes. When you hear the fourth, immediately switch to holding the "C" key (with the Leopard disk inserted, of course).
If this doesn't get you booted to the installer, there may be something wrong with the installer disk.

  • Difference between "Verify" and "Repair" Permissions?

    Hi,
I was wondering if there's any harm for the reapair permissions proccess by clicking the "repair" permissions button first rather than clicking the "verify" and then "Repair" permissions button on disk utility.
    Thanks!

    Niel wrote:
There isn't. Verify permissions is a waste of time.

I thought the same, since DU will tell you in the progress screen when you hit repair permissions something like "Verifying and Repairing Permissions on Macintosh HD... and so forth" So I should be ok by just hitting the repair permission button ony, right?
    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
It's what I do and I should think everyone else. 'Verify' doesn't actually do anything, just lists problems, so there's little point. It's different with disk repair, because you can't repair the disk you're booted from, but you can at least check to see if there's a problem. This doesn't apply with permissions.
So in your view Verify is just a diagnostic, while Repair is a diagnostic and a repair right?

There are no ticking noises coming from the hard drive, and it lights up still, and i have tried replacing the cords, and restarting/shutting down the computer, and have tried it on a mac desktop also - same problem.

  • Is anyone else having problems with Verifying and Repairing Disk permissions?

Hey folks, every time I try to verify and repair disk permissions lately, this is all I get...
Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
I usually get a long list, then repair it, and it seems to keep things clean.
I'm having trouble with my address book.
When I move the mouse down the bottom of the page my dock doesn't come up right away, sometimes it won't - I have to command tab to go to another program.
So I'm wondering if these are related. Thanks for any help!

  • External HD Verify and Repair Permissions...

I have my iTunes library on an external HD and was wondering if I should verify and repair permissions for this drive as well when I do it for my internal HD??
    Thanks
    Ryan

No; the information the Disk Utility uses when it repairs permissions doesn't have any entries for disks which don't have Mac OS X installed. Each installation of Mac OS X contains an extra set of permission data in the /Library/Receipts/ folder, and most have an additional list of special permissions to check. These only contain data for the disk or partition on which the receipts are located.

I haven’t been in this situation, but can’t you just change your account settings and use a different e-mail or maybe add another secondary e-mail to use for verification?

Is it just me, but in leopard 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 the disk utility permission verify and repair takes way longer than it did in tiger. Its like 10-15 mins to complete now. Am I the only one? or am I crazy?

Mac OS X 10.5 consults ACLs in the process, which makes it take much longer.

    No.

  • HELP! Can't verify or repair HD - confused about using Start Up Discs

    Hi there:
Never had a problem then yesterday my iMac made the sound it does when its "thinking" and froze. I forced shut down by pushing the "start" button on the back.
I then tried Disc Utility to verify my HD and it stopped and said:
"Invalid node structure. The Volume HD needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked. Volume needs repair."
On researching, I see that I am supposed to shut down and use my "start up" discs that came with the computer - but these are 2 years old. I am now running the latest update of 10.4.11 (not whatever it was back 2 years ago.)
I also got nervous that I should back up my important documents & apps before I do anything just in case. So this morning, I made Burn folders and tried to burn to 2 CD-RWs. They did burn, but for whatever reason, the finished CDs say that they are "read only" and that I don't have permissions to change that (even though I am the only user and administrator, etc).
    What am I doing wrong?
I even tried changing the permissions on one CD-RW before I burned to granted RW permissions to anyone and all the contents....which looked fine but after the CD still said I have no permissions.
    HELP!!!!
Can I start up from the original install disc and repair without it reverting back to all the old whatever permissions & updates etc., that were on that 2 year old start up disc?
What am I doing wrong when burning to a CD-RW? Why do they show that I have only read only and can't change?
When I try to do "Get Info" and it says to unlock the little lock, I do and nothing happens - no prompt with a password or anything that lets me change it.
Any help you can give about how best to use Disc Utility to verify & repair my HD (if I can indeed use the 2 year old start up CD without a problem) and what I am doing wrong to make my CDs RW?
    Thank You!!!!!!

CD-RWs - which should mean that I can burn to them but they should be erasable/re-writable - yes?
    Yes indeed.
But when I burned 2 of these today, the resulting discs "info" states they are "read only" and I have no permissions to change anything...
Aha, the Standard for appendable CD/DVDs was never finalized, so on the Mac, once you burn you're done burning, unless you used create Sessions which will make it look like 2 or more CDs when mounted, or erase and start over with the write.

Nope, you're doing it right, it just doesn't work like a Floppy or HD is all.
