Can't verify the volume of my Portable Hard Drive with partition?!

Hi All,
After trying to delete my Time Machine partition to start it fresh I seem to have messed up the rest of my Hard Drive, and even after deleting the partition I now cannot create a new timemachine... It is a portable hard drive and I don't have enough room on my computer to transfer all the files to reformat the drive. Is there anything else I can do?
I keep getting these errors:
'The volume 'HARDRIVENAME' could not be verified completely.'
And also that repairing the hard drive cannot happen and I instead have to try to re-format.
etc
When I try to create a new partition I get the error:
'Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed.'
Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Can you plug in the hard drive directly to your MBP and then decrypt the hard drive?  You should be able to do this by opening up Finder and then either right clicking the hard drive (holding down two fingers and clicking) or holding down ctrl and then clicking on the hard drive.

  • How can I play the music on my  external hard drive with my laptop?

Look before everyone points out that this has been asked lots of times before, I wanted to state that in this particular case it might be a little bit more complicated. You see I think I've been an idiot.
I backed up all my physical music onto my external hard drive, but only the physical music. So now I have my nice new laptop and haven't got a clue how to play the music off my external hard drive, since I don't have an itunes library on my external hard drive.
Anyway any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Am I being a plonker, but it doesn't seem as simple as that. If I try and import via itunes it seems to want me to select the individual music file not the folder which holds all the music.
Also if I simply import it, won't my mac copy the files from my external hard drive back on to my laptop? Which makes me think I change the location where all the music is stored in itunes...?
    Thanks for the help!

OK, OSX can read that but not write, but...
    A few options...
You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • Can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop to use files on the airport?

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.

Copy the entire iTunes folder from \Users\<User>\Music on the old drive into your music folder on the new computer.
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

When i try to update the itunes on my external hard drive, it creates a new application in my computers hard drive. How can i update the one on my external hard drive?

there's no advantage to having the application on your external drive, you should leave it in your applications folder on your internal drive. if you insist on changing the app's location, you'll always have to then copy the app by hand to the external drive

  • Wanted: Portable Hard Drive With SD Slot Used with Leopard/Timemachine

Are there external/portable hard drives that work with Leopard/Timemachine, which have an SD slot? It would be convenient to take the hard drive on the road to download frequently. But I'm not sure about a power source unless I bring my laptop.
I have an 80GB MacBook and looking for external picture storage. I use the computer mainly for IPhoto and web browsing.
The Apple store online doesn't have such a device and I would consider getting the iomega 160 GB portable hard drive from them.
    Many thanks,

You can boot your iMac from a connected FireWire drive. It must be FireWire and not USB. G3 Macs cannot run Leopard. Tiger will work fine, if you have more RAM.
Also, can a Mac Mini be connected to my iMac and used as an external drive?
If the Mac Mini is PowerPC and not the current Intel version, you should be able to start the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
and connect it to the iMac's FireWire port as an external drive. If the Mac mini is PowerPC and has Tiger installed on it, the iMac should even be able to boot from that installation. If it has Leopard, you can still connect to it for data storage purposes, but you cannot boot the iMac from it.
If the Mac mini is Intel, the drive is partitioned using +GUID Partition Table+ (instead of +Apple Partition Map+ used by PowerPC Macs). Therefore, access to the drive using FireWire Target Disk Mode will depend on the OS installed on the iMac. It should work if the OS is Tiger. It will not work with Panther and earlier.
If you want to use a Mac mini to off-load some of the data on the iMac, you may want to use a network connection instead. Then, you will have full access to the Mac mini while it shares its storage space with the old iMac.

  • Can I back-up files to a portable hard drive and not use Time Machine?

I have a portable hard drive that I use for all of my Time Machine back-ups. I back-up the entire system every two or three weeks. I use the Time Machine software and it works quite well. I'm interested in backing up specific files (photos, documents, etc.) to a second portable drive every six months but I don't want to use the Time Machine software. Is there a simple way to hook up the portable drive (brand new Lacie 500 gb drive), open up the file on my desktop and drag the files to the new drive? Are there special steps I need to perform to avoid formatting the drive for Time Machine? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

You can do that, but you'll have to erase the drive, or delete the previous versions, each time. You might want to look at CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're most often used to make full bootable "clones" of your internal HD, but can be set to back up specific files and folders as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but I think you'll need the paid one (about $30, I think) to do this.

It would be best to format it for Macs, which is the same as Time Machine. What is the problem with that?

  • Can I Replace my Early 2009 Mac Mini Hard Drive with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive?

I am replacing my 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive.  Instead of keeping the hard drive on an external enclosure I was wondering if I can use it to upgrade my Mac Mini's 160GB hard Drive with the one Im taking out of the MBP.  And if so, is there any special formatting I would need to do?

It should work fine. No special formatting required. It actuality, I suspect that if you connect the HD, the Mini will boot into the OSX that was on the MacBook.
When you replace the HD in the Mini just be careful with the antennas and their wires and connections I accidentally disconnected the wifi antenna on mine when I replaced the HD.

  • HT204370 I have changed my internal hard drive on my macbook pro. I have put old hard drive into a capsule and have this plugged into my laptop. I can't find the movies on my old hard drive now? Any idea how I can move them to iTunes again? cloud taking H

I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • How can I change the settings of an external hard drive?

I have a 250-GB external hard drive connected to my Mac mini, whose files and folders I can´t delete as it shows up as a read-only disk. According to the Mac help, I can use the files on a disk by clicking on the "Get Info" label and selecting "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the menu. However, when I try to do that, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox doesn´t even show up on the menu. Any suggestions or alternatives to get to delete those files I no longer need? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Mac mini 1.66 GHz Intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1 GB DDR2 SDRAM

If you want to erase the entire drive you can format it with Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities).
Mario is right about NTFS. If you drive is formatted as such (which would mean it was used by Windows at some point) then the issue is related to permissions (actually NTFS-formatted drives don't have permissions, but Access Control Lists instead), it's just that Mac OS X can't write to these disks.

  • Why is a number appended to the volume name on external hard drive, only in path?

Last week I replaced a failing external drive. Using Disk Utility I partitioned it into two volumes, named them CCC and Warehouse (Warehouse is the problem). I had never had any volumes named Warehouse previously. In Finder the name shows correctly, until I click "Get Info", where the name is shown as Warehouse 1. All of the files on Warehouse show their paths as /Volumes/Warehouse 1. I don't know when the " 1" was appended to the name, or how it happened. It's screwing up my applications that write to or from the volume, the path is wrong. When I'm in Warehouse's "Get Info" I try to change the name back to Warehouse, but it immediately goes back to Warehouse 1. I copied everything off the drive, repartioned using the same names, and still have the problem. I notice if I change the name to something totally different, like "Fish", I don't get that problem. I would prefer to keep the name Warehouse though, if possible.

I have noticed that the system can "hold onto" a drive name when there's a disconnect from the external volume.
Try this. Eject your external drive. Go into Terminal, and type
    Cd /Volumes
Do you see a phantom "Warehouse" volume still there? If so, navigate into it, make sure there are no files you might want to keep (copy them elsewhere if so), then navigate out and use
    sudo rm -rf /Volumes/Warehouse
    See if that fixes it.

  • 2 confusing models for the Toshiba 500GB Slim Portable Hard drives

Can anyone explain what the difference is between thee 2 products. Having a hard time finding out.
Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Slim II Portable External Hard Drive - Silver - HDTD205XK3D1
    Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Slim Portable External Hard Drive - Black - HDTD105XK3D1
Could it be just be the software they come with, surely not just the colour difference ?
They both have the led light on them.
One as you see is labelled as "Slim II"  - what's all that about ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The major difference is the software that comes with the drives.
The Canvio Slim comes with NTI Backup Now EZ and Tuxera NTFS for Mac. The first is a full backup solution. The second enables write capability to the NTFS drive on Macs without needing to reformat it. This means that the drive can share files between Mac and Windows.
The Canvio Slim II includes that software as well as PogoPlug PC. This allows remote access to file on the drive via the web or mobile apps. It also gives users 10 GB of PogoPlug cloud storage. The Slim II also has the HDD Password Tool that allows users to set a password on the drive.
