Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

  • Can't video chat or screen share with one person

Hi, I can video chat and screen share with one remote colleague but not with another. When I try, I get the message 'Failed to start screen sharing because: Screen sharing could not be established' (and a similar message for video.
He has a brand-new iMac with Leopard, so there is no compatibility issue.
This would be very useful for us, can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks
    Phil

There are various threads on getting iChat to work with various routers. There are a couple of Support docs that talk about it, but I always have trouble finding them, now.
Use the 'more options' search function and show posts in the last year instead of the last 90 days, which I believe it defaults to.
One thing I know of is Internet Sharing cannot be turned on. Another common problem is double-NATting, where their modem is serving out addresses via NAT and the Router is sharing those out on its own NAT. You should only have one running.

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share, why?

I need a nice fellow to help me out.
I don't know what I'm doing here, having never really used iChat. I can IM, but whenever I try to video chat or screen share I get a communication error.
I am on a wireless network so I suspect that perhaps my wireless router has a firewall that is preventing this. My firewall is turned off on this computer.
Where should I begin to even figure out what is the cause of the problem? What questions should I ask and what settings should I check?
    I appreciate any advice.
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi
Is your mum PC or Mac?
If Mac to Mac, have both ends done the following?
iChat>Preferences>Video>Bandwidth limit: None (500Kbps if Verizon, Road Runner or Comcast)
    System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming>Streaming speed: 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
    Restart iChat
If there is a PC end, has PC done setup as per http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service ?
    Does anything at http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy help?

  • Video Chat and Screen Share Crash after a few seconds

I currently have a Mac Pro and an 802.11N airport extreme. I can do a speedtest and get downloads of 14mbps supposedly.
Whenever I start a video chat or screen share with someone (I just installed leopard tonight) It starts up and then after a few moments crashes and it wants me to send the error report to apple.
What could be the issue? Is it a firewall thing? Hardware glitch?
I have no idea, but would LOVE To get this fixed.
    Thanks

I have the exact same issue. Apple has already replaced the Airport Extreme but that did not help. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

  • Cannot Video Chat or Screen Share, please help!

    Hi,
I am trying to video chat and screen share with my mom, but I cannot get it to work. We both have Macbooks running Leopard, and we both connect to the Internet using AT&T DSL. She uses an Apple Airport Extreme router, while I use a Netgear Rangemax WPN824v2 wireless router. I think it is my connection that is messed up because I have brought my Macbook to a friends house and was able to video chat and screen share with my mom using my friends connection, so its definitely not her connection that is messed up. I have allowed iChat in my firewall, I have set both Quicktime and iChat video to 1 mbps. I really do not know what else to do. When I send her a video or screen share invite, it says "starting" and then "failed to receive a response." Here is the error log:

    Hi GuyCalledBob,
The Speedstream can route as well as the router you have been using.
This means that most likely you have both devices being a DHCP server and the Speedstream may also need the ports open.
The Site I linked you to shows limited pictures of the Speedstream set up pages and I can not tell if it it does UPnP from them. The Link does tell you how to Access the device in a Web browser.
Before changing anything you need to access both devices and tells us which one(s) are being DHCP servers. Check the Speedstream menus for UPnP as well.
You may need to make the Speedstream not do DHCP and Possibly use DMZ to make sure all ports are open to the router.
The router will then need to be set up to use a Static IP to the Modem. Something like this pic although the actual IPs, DNS servers and Subnet Mask may be different.
You will need to know the DNS servers from your ISP.
I would guess you are getting Error 4 (Remote IP Invalid)

  • During a demo today could not use Messages for video chat or screen share - what dumb thing was I doing wrong?

I was giving a demo / class today for some people in a volunteer group I work for. They all got new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros, and I got a MacBook Pro because I am going to be going into explain how to use them.
Most everythng went well, but one really cool thing I do all the time from home on my iMac I couldn't get to work. That part of the lesson was a disaster, though fortunately everything else went well.
I'd like to figure out what dumb thing I was doing wrong so I can show them next week.
I know we have to sign in with AOL accounts for screen sharing to work in Messages. So first I had everybody sign up for a free AOL account. That went fine.
Then we all logged in using our accounts. That went fine for everybody except one person. We could all see each other online, with little video cameras next to our names in the Buddy List. One person never showed up anywhere for some reason.
But we could not do either video chats or successfully request to share other peoples' screens, which I do all the time at home to help other people with their Macs.
One person could not even see any requests from me pop up. One person could see my requests come in and accepted them, but nothing happened after that.
Ordinary message chats were working ok.
    Things I already thought of:
    1. Perhaps the wi-fi in the bulding was blocking some ports? Just in case, I turned on mobile hotspot (tethering) on my iPhone 5 and had everybody connect to my network. But the results were the same, so it wasn't that.
    2. I wasn't sure it mattered, but in Settings > Sharing I made sure that everbody had screen sharing turned on. And just in case, even though I don't have this set from home, I further made sure everybody had "anyone may request to control the screen" checked.
While I could do local network sharing of screens (via the Devices list in the Finder side panel), I couldn't for the life of me get it to work with Messages. But I've been doing this for years from home to help my sister and other people across town with their Mac by doing screen sharing this way and taking over their screen.
It must be something dumb I'm overlooking. Anybody know what it is?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Problem solved, finally, by AppleCare support!
I gave up trying to reach the "English support line" guy located in Manila and decided to insist on plain old Japanese support here in Tokyo and explained the problem from scratch.
First we tried all the usual suspects, but nothing we did could get it to work. Then we did an ARA (Apple Remote Access) support session. This was the first time I ever did this. Quite cool, and very useful.
At first we still could not figure out what was wrong, but finally isolated the problem to the way my AOL account name was entered.
When I added the AOL account to my Messages app, all I did was enter my username part. I didn't add the @aol.com part, because I never did that on my iMac. However, Messages kept on automatically adding "@aol.com" to the end of the AIM account name.
The Apple tech person got me to try once again to get rid of the @aol.com part of the account name. We:
    1. Disabled the account.
    2. Manually deleted the @aol.com, leaving just my AIM name.
    3. Restarted my MacBook Pro (very quick, by the way, and also immediately brought back his ARA session).
This time the @aol.com part remained gone, and I was able to test connecting to my iMac, which has a different AIM account set. It worked!
I was able to do screen sharing via Messages! And also do video chat via Messages. Yay!
So much thanks to Watabe-san at Apple support. The people I am teaching will be happy to see this working on Sunday, because it really is a very useful tool for assisting people remotely.

  • How to return to video chat from screen share mode?

Is there an easy way to leave screen share mode and return to the video chat without having to stop iChat and start a new Video conference?

    Hi,
    No.
    You have the method.

  • Why can I video chat with everyone on my list- Except for one person?

Recently, my friend and I have been having problems video chatting with each other. A couple of months ago, we were able to screen share, voice chat, and video chat just fine. I can, and she can too, do all those things with all of our other iChat contacts. Except when we try to do anything with each other, it says "A problem has occurred with iChat". We've tried it multiple times on different computers, internet connections, etc., but it never seems to work. Is there a way that my friend and I can start to video chat and screen share again? This problem has just come out of the blue, and it is really bugging us.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Have either of you changed a Router at all ?
I have some info dating back to iChat 3 listed here
As time and iChat has progressed so has our understanding of NAT (Network Address Translation)
In some cases the way the Device that does the routing at each end does NAT means you cannot get a video connection.
If it was working and now doesn't it suggests something changed.
As changing setting would more likely effect every Buddy at one end it looks more like a hardware issue (at least in terms of the devices functionality)
Make, model and version numbers of any routers may help identify something specific.

  • File share, video chat, or screen sharing isn't working.

This past month I have realized that file sharing or video chat is not working. Every time I try to use file share it says that it is "calculating time" then after a few minutes says no response from my buddy. But for some reason I am able to send files, I just cannot receive them. Neither has video chat, or screen sharing been working lately, too.

    Hi Max,
Like Matt Clifton who answered you in the other thread I do not use email for anything I would want to be secure.
I do have certificates from a couple of people who have used vetting sites about who is sending them email (even though they emailed me first).
The Mail Forum is Leopard may have something on newer developments in security related issues with Mail. Whether they can be transposed to and Earlier OS I would not know as Mail is not really my area.
As several Governments has expressed the idea that they want this sort of Access to prevent terrorism I am not sure if any form of internet contact is going to be that secure.
Having said that iChat has problems if DoS or SPI filters are in place but seem more influenced by the amount of data sent to you which DoS interprets as an Attack on the threshold basis and SPI just does not seem able to cope with high volume streams, effectively making that Threshold based in it's resultant action.
On the flip side iChat is Peer-to-Peer in Direct Chats (Where Files and Pics in chats are sent) and in Audio Only and Video chats.
In Leopard (iChat 4) the Video Window can be used as th control point to Send as either iChat Theatre or File Sending.
I have no idea what is out there for Mail or alternative apps.

  • Can't video chat with iChat 6.0.1 with Verizon Fios modem,MI424WR.

Can't video chat with iChat 6.0.1 with Verizon Fios modem, MI424WR. Get error "Router type is Restricted, Port Restricted, Symmetric, or Unknown." How do I configure the router? I have allowed iChat incoming connections in my Mac (10.7.2) firewall. GChat and Skype work fine.
    Thanks

    Hi.
You have to configure Port Forwarding on the Verizon FIOS Modem Router for iChat.
    http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/MI424WR_Rev._G_User_Manual_30.16.0_v1.pdf
    Excerpt from pages 109 & 110:
"To set up basic port forwarding:
    1. Click the arrow next to “IP Address forward to or select from menu” to display  a menu and either enter the IP address of the item to port forward from, or choose an item from the drop-down menu (choose your machine by host name, since the internal ip address changes from time to time, after the lease time expires).
    2. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select a pre-configured application from the drop-down menu (if iChat is not present in the list, you'll have to set up Advanced Port Forwarding).
    3. Click Apply. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen. "
" To set up advanced port forwarding (custom ports):
    1. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select Custom Ports from the drop-down menu.
    Con
    2. Enter the host name (from the drop-down list) or local IP address of the computer providing the service in the “Specify IP” text box. Note that only one local network computer can be assigned to provide a specific service or application.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select the Internet protocol to be provided from the “Protocol” drop-down list.  Depending on the protocol selected, additional options appear in the screen.
    5. Select the connection with which this port forwarding rule will be active from the “WAN Connection Type” drop-down list.
    6. To select a port to forward communications to (this is optional), select “Specify” from the “Forward to Port” drop-down list, then, in the text box that appears, enter the port number. If no port is identified, select “Same as
    Incoming Port.”
    7. If this port will be active all the time, select “Always” from the “Schedule” drop-down list. If the rule will only be active at certain times, select “User Defined” and click Add. Then, add a schedule rule (for more details about
schedule rules, see the “Advanced Settings” chapter of this manual).
    8. If source and destination ports need to be specified, select Specify from the drop-down menu list (by clicking on the appropriate arrow), then entering the port numbers.
    9. Click Apply to save the changes. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen."

    Good Luck.

  • No audio with video chat, but it works with screen sharing...

I've got a friend who just upgraded to snow leopard. We're both using iMacs. My computer is working find, and I have audio and video with other people.
When we video chat, there is no audio. When I screen share with her computer, with her seeing my desktop or me seeing her desktop, the audio works.
No mute buttons are down, I've checked system preferences (sound) everything is right.
    Any ideas?

HAs she checked that System Preferences > Sound > Input is listing and has her Mic Selected ?
Is he r Volume high enough in the same place ?
In her Video Menu is the "Microphone " Enabled" ticked ?
In iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section is the same Mic listed ?
Do the response bars move under the Preview when she talks ?
During a Chat in Your Connection Doctor (Video Menu) is she sending any Audio ?
IS she showing as having a log more Bit Rate than you ?

  • Can i video chat with someone on a windows pc using yahoo messenger?

hi, i am considering buying a macbook laptop and would like to know before i purchase, can i video chat with someone using a windows pc with vista os on it if we are both using yahoo messenger? if so please tell me how to set that up correctly b/c the tech support site hasnt been helpful. Also, can i plug my Logitech QuickIM or ExpressIM webcam into the usb port and the macbook pick it up and allow me to use it with yahoo messenger to video chat with? can i still use the headphone earbud that came with the webcamera also if i plug it into the headphone jack on the macbook? if so how do you do that? i know that macbook has a built in webcamera, but i like to turn the camera instead of having to turn the computer all the time to show different parts of areas, etc. in my house, etc. please help me so i will know whether or not to purchase it or not. and also, can i use microsoft outlook to check my email with on a macbook, or what email program would i need to use?
email me at [email protected] with answers please.

regarding video, yes you can do a video chat with another pc user. the pc side has to right click your name and find the "view video" (using yahoo mesenger and built in cam)
have not use audio though so i can not assure you that it would work. (but most probably it would)
as to using external cam and mic, you can try to borrow someone else cam or go to a mac store and ask for a demo
as to microsoft outlook... there is no mac version of microsoft outlook as far as i know. (correct me if im wrong) how ever you can use bootcamp and have windows installed and use your mac as if your using windows

  • Can I video chat (face time) with my Galaxy S4?

Any answers?   "Can I video chat (face time) with my Galaxy S4?"

You can also use Video Call when you or if you have or get Advanced Calling as well as use Hangouts for video chats.

  • What networks can i video chat with?

I know i can chat with jabber and gmail talk users. However I would like to be able to utilize the video features of iChat. What other networks can i use that will allow the full functionality of video support in ichat?

    Hi,
The Jabber Side will work in Video, iChat to iChat user.
You can also use an Apple ID (@mac.com or @Me.com) or an AIM name and you can then Video chat to other iChat users logged in to the AIM servers as well as AIM 5.9 or AIM 5.5 ON Windows XP AND THE Trillian Application on PCs that can also use the AIM servers as a base.
If you have other Macs and they have iChat open you can Video to them over the Bonjour Buddy list. (Although not if both Macs are logged in as Jef A. (your Mac User Account name) as the name in the Address Book on both).
