Can't view mp4 files on iTunes

Hi,
None of my mp4 files play on iTunes or QuickTime, both of which are up to date. I have OS X 10.7.5. The mp4 files have all been added to iTunes movies. But when I click 'play', the window is all black / blank although the title of the video is shown in the header, and even the timer . Same with QuickTime. Does anyone know of a fix?
Thanks!

Sorry I meant to say 'even the timer is running', i.e. everything in the video window looks right except that there is no picture!

  • I can't import mp4 files onto itunes

i tried several times to import my mp4 files onto itunes but failed everytime. how to overcome this?

    1) find an MP3 file on your file system (in Windows Explorer)
    2) Right click on it to get contextual menu
    3) Select Properties
    4) on the General Tab the text "opens with" appears - in your case it'll be windows Media Player
    5) Click Change
    6) Select ITunes
    7) Select Always for this type checkbox
    8) Now try double clicking on an MP3 file
    9) Does it start playing in ITunes?
    10) Check Itunes settings: Edit>Preferences>Advanced
    11) Are the checkboxes Keep Itunes folder organized and Copy to Itunes foler when adding selected? If not - read the manual to understand what those two settings do

  • Safari can't view .mp4 files?

I have acouple .mp4 files to download on a site, but whenever you click to view/download them, its just a bunch of gibberish (doesn't trigger the download), where as in other browsers (ie firefox) it just goes to the download, like its supposed to.
Quicktime files (.mov) work fine and just go to play/download, but .mp4 files get errors. Is this just a safari problem?
    thanks!

    Thanks for the info...
is there a way to be able to view in the browser like the quicktime files?
Is there something in the coding of the site that should be added to trigger this effect?
    thanks!

  • Can't import mp4 file into iTunes

I have had a lot of success converting my DVDs to mp4s and storing them on external hard drives to play through AppleTV (I love AppleTV!). However I have a couple of files that will not load into iTunes. I get no error message but when I try to open with Quicktime I get an error message saying the file is not a movie file. The files I am having problems with were recorded from cable tv and written to DVD. Please help...

HOCKEY PUCK! Looks like this isn't a solution anyway. Tried it on a 250 MB file with 7 chapter markers and got some very random results.
    1) Clipped the previously embeded graphic from the iTunes file and applied the same workflow. This time it did not save the chapter track (just like it does in MPEG Streamclip).
    2) A bit confused, I deleted the newly created file and tried again only without clipping the graphic first. This time when I attempted to open the newly created file there was not video track whatsoever.
    3) Now I'm getting really confused. So I delete the new "audio" file and load the source file one more time. This time, instead of relying on the the "current default" options (i.e., the ones last used), I open the options window and find the "Pass through" has reset to "None." So I attempt to change it back to "Pass through" and guess what... Now that option is "grayed out" just as you say (and as I believe it used to be in QT v7.1.3).
    4) Totally flabbergasted, I close the player and load a secondary file (paired TV episode to the first file) and open the "Movie to MPEG-4" Export option. To my surprise, the audio and video "Pass through" settings are back again. Okay, so this time I decide to "tic" the chapter track to see if that will prevent it's loss. No joy!
Basically, I spend a few more wasted hours trying to figure out why I could not duplicate my original success. I even drag out other applications like SimpleMovieX and MPEG Streamclip which have "Save As..." options to "compatible" containers. Both delete the chapter track just as QT Pro is currently doing. Suffice it to say I'm growing angrier by the moment and finally decide to quit so I can update the latest results here. Sorry everyone... Really thought the latest QT upgrade had someting going for itself here. Looks like I merely "jumped the gun" instead.

  • IPod touch can't synch .mov files with iTunes.

My iPod touch can't synch .mov files with iTunes. The error message says that the files were not transfered because they can't be read on my device.  I'm not able to transfer any mp4 files, either.  These are my own short animations, small files (under 2MB). Home sharing is on.  I'm trying to synch with the latest version of iTunes on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.  Thanks.

    See:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
iTunes: Frequently asked questions about viewing and syncing videos
Yo may have to use a third-party computer program like HandBrake to convert the format to one compatible withthe iPod

  • Is it possible to view AVI files in iTunes?

is it possible to view AVI files in iTunes?  If yes, what codecs are required ?

No, it is not possible, but you can always download any video converter. Or open your AVI file with QuickTime.
    Hope this was helpful

  • Can't upload .mov files to iTunes anymore

Hi!  I don't know if this just started when I upgraded to Lion and did all of the recent updates to iTunes, and added iCloud, etc, but suddenly I can't drag .mov files into iTunes like I used to be able to do. I can't add them with the Add To Library menu either. Because of this I can't put them on my iPad. Is anyone else having this problem?  Is there a fix?  TIA!

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Can't import mp4 files

    Hello,
suddenly I can't import/open mp4 files with iTunes on my iMac anymore. I have no problem opening them with another application (quicktime) or open other files (mp3) with iTunes on my iMac. On my MacBook I still can open the exact same mp4 files with iTunes (same OS, same updates).
I opened a couple of files in a row. All the sudden iTunes refuses to open them (just the ones I've already imported before still work). Doubleclicking on a mp4 file makes iTunes start, but that's it. No import, no error, just nothing.
Does anyone have a clue what might have happened?
    Katrin

Are they Audio or Video .mp4 files?
Were they created on a Mac or PC?
Have you ever been able to open .mp4 files on these systems before?

How can I view duplicate songs in iTunes 11?

If needed press ctrl-b to reveal the menu bar. Use Shift-View > Show Exact Duplicates to reveal the duplicates. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.

  • Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Can't view pdf files in gmail (OS 5.01)

Since I have installed OS 5.1 I can't view pdf files in my gmail account. I can view them on yahoo (same email) or with the previous OS.  I just download 5.01 a week ago so I am not sure if I missed something for settings or if I need to change something because my search has not discovered anyone else having an issue.
    Thanks!

Yes, I can view emails it is the PDF files I can't download or view.  In OS 4 I could touch the attachment and it would open up, now when I touch the attachment it just tries to download.  This is for all PDF files in gmail.

  • After downloading a pdf from a website, how can I view the file in Safari 6.0.4 (just as I can in Safari 5.0.6)?  I bet that it's simple, but I've missed something, somewhere, and a solution will be greatly appreciated.

After downloading a pdf from a website, how can I view the file in Safari 6.0.4 (just as I can in Safari 5.0.6)?  I bet that it's simple, but I've missed something, somewhere, and a solution will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Kirk,
Thank's for your efforts, and I just wish that this was the solution.  Unfortunately, it isn't because, after double-clicking on the pdf in the website, it simply "opens" in another Safari window as a black screen - the pdf is there, somewhere, but not visible (either as an icon, or as a document).
When I right-click in the black Safari window, where the file is supposed to be, the only option available to display the file is to "Open file in Internet Explorer" (which is not what I want to do).  Other options include saving or printing the pdf, which I don't want until I've confirmed that it's the form that I want.  The same options are offered if I right-click on the file icon in the website.
    Any other suggestions, please?

  • How Can I View DVD Files?

My guitar instructor shoots a short video (usually 5min or less) at the end of every lesson to help me review what we learned.  While these DVDs play just fine on my iMac, I'd like to copy them sometimes over to my iPad so I can view them when I'm travelling.  I can handle copying them over to my iPad, but have run into a major stumbling block:
When I open the double click the DVD on my desktop, it opens a Finder window.  (Good so far!).  But, the Finder window is empty (not so good!). It shows zero items in the status bar.  Obviously, there are files there, as the DVD plays just fine...I'm just not able to view them.
Any idea what I need to do in order to view the contents of the disk in order to convert the video over to my iPad?
I'm attaching a couple of files so you can see what I'm seeing:
The above Finder window is what I see after double clicking the DVD on my desktop.
When I Get Info about the DVD, I see the below information:
Any idea what's going on, and what I need to do?

    Barny,
Thanks...I must be getting old!  I'd tried a couple of DVD ripping software apps I had laying around, and neither worked.  Thinking there must be something else I need to do, I posted this question.
After reading your answer, I went back and looked (closer!) at my applications, and realized I'd forgotten all about RipIt.  I launched Ripit, and it was able to rip the DVD (and compress it for playback on my iPad) with no problem.
It's still disconcerting that I can't view any files on the DVD in the Finder, but it is what it is, I guess.
Thanks again for jogging my memory!
