Can't write in Pages 09 documents with Mavericks

So I accidentally upgraded to Pages 5 on my ipad so then I had to install Mavericks and Pages 5 on my MacBook too (to allow syncing). Now Pages 5 is a complete disaster. It screws up all the lay-outs I created in 09 and doesn't allow me to create new ones as there are simply too many features missing. For instance, where did the blue lines do that tell you when an object is exactly in the middle of a page?! And dozens more.
Now, here's the thing. I was smart enough to save a copy of Pages 09, so I can still use that (even if it doesn't sync with my ipad). However, when I create a new document in Pages 09, there is no way to type in it anymore. As in, no cursor and no option to place it in the document. When I start typing, I get that annoying sound that indicates I'm trying to type somewhere that doesn't allow typing. Which is the main function of a word processing programme, so it's really weird!
Any suggestions?!!! I actually use Pages now and then as a professional, using it to create lay-outs for a publisher. So I am really dependent on the programme. I am also happy to hear suggestions for a different word processor! I used to love Pages, but now I'm just miserable.

I guess there is one positive note. The new IOS Pages exports to .docx format.
I have Pages ’09 v4.3 installed and upgraded OS X 10.8.5 to Mavericks. I have not installed Pages v5.0. I can open a new document, type at will, and save it.
Have you tried launching Pages ’09 from another account on your Mac? This will determine whether it is an installation issue, or a configuration issue unique to your login account. You may benefit from pressing shift+command+U and then launching Disk Utility to verify/repair permissions on your boot drive.

A client recently emailed me a Pages '08 document and I can't open it with my copy of regular old Pages.
What? I can't open a Pages '08 document with Pages 2.02? Serious? That's just messed up. I mean, I should at least be able to view the document.

But, if you need to combine single pages, then it can be done with Adobe Acrobat only.

The general idea is that you colour correct photographs once, archive, and convert with or without colour changes. The archived photograph is unchanged - or we would be colour correcting the same photographs again and again and again.
If you have a photograph with a corrected exposure, you can open the photograph in the Apple ColorSync Utility, apply a colour space conversion to a grayscale appearance using the preinstalled ICC profile, save the photograph under another name, and place that in your pagination.
If you have a paginated document with corrected exposures, and any such non-scalable bitmap or scalable spline graphics as you have chosen to add, you can render the pagination as a whole to PDF through the same ICC profile, carrying out the same colour space conversion on any and all objects.
Caveat: If you intend the pagination for certain processes, in particular offset lithography, then you are probably expected not to render the type to grayscale, but rather to render it to single ink solid black. No software can determine what printing process you intend, you have to understand a bit about printing, and how to set up general colour space conversions in software. Ask your prepress provider, and if the answer is not prompt and proficient, pick another provider.

There is probably a table at 116 that has cells that spans over more than one page. Pages can't breakt text withina table cell,.Only between rows.
You can try to change the paper size in Page Set Up to something much longer, to being able to the the content

Yes, it's true. The new versions cannot open any iWork '08 or earlier documents or templates. You will get an error saying to open the files in iWork '09 then open them in the new version. I suggest that you buy a retail copy of iWork '09 from a third party such as Amazon or eBay & then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.
If you’ve already purchased the new iWork apps in Mavericks, you can also use this trick to get Pages 4.3. If you still have access to a Mac running Mountain Lion. It must be Mountain Lion or Lion. Snow Leopard won't work. If the iWork '09 apps are installed, compress them & delete the originals. Launch the Mac App Store & click on the 'install' buttons under the iWork apps. You will get a message that you can't install the new version on this Mac but it will offer to download the previous version for you. Voilá, you have the self-contained apps that you can copy to another Mac.
If you don't want to use iWork '09 to convert the files to a format that the new versions can open you can export them as Microsoft Office documents - Word, Excel, PowerPoint - then open those in the new versions.

Read,write and create word document with list data

My requirement is that I have a custom list called List1 and which has a 4 (suppose XName, location, phone, email)columns and also have a Template document(.dot). If I click on save button , new document has to create from the Template document(.dot) and
should modify the content depends on list columns.
For that I need to read the document , find out the text where XName , location,,phone, email and replace with the list item data(user entered data).
Can anybody please refer links for read,write and create word document?

Yes, you can using Office Open XML. I found it to be a lot more cumbersome and in the end not a money saving approach:

My macbook pro isn't letting me do any writing. I can write in a textbox but not normally on the page. I have probably just pressed something to make it like this. Any ideas on how I can start writing again?

It can be frustrating when you not aware of the differences between the word processing and the page layout documents. Go to the Help menu in Pages and and select Pages User Guide to download the guide. It has a lot of information on Pages.

Can I open a Reader 9 Document with electronic signatures in Reader 10?

I currently have an Adobe Reader 9 document with fields filled out and also with several electronic signatures.
I need to be able to edit this document.
My understanding is that I can only edit or add the typewritter tool only when using Reader 10.
So couple of questions. First, will I be able to open this Reader 9 document using Reader 10?
Second, will I be able to add the typewritter tool once I download Reader 10?
Third, will I be able to make changes to existing form field data, once I add the typewritter tool?
Fourth, will this process invalidate the digital signatures already authenticated?

The "Typewriter tool" is only available in Acrobat Pro. Reader 11 DOES have the ability to "Add text comments" to a PDF but it isn't exactly the same thing. I'm unsure if "comments" will print or not.

You cannot. There will be nothing left. iWeb pages rely a lot on JavaScript.
Use a template from Mail.app. Or create such template. These are simple TABLES and have no JavaScript in it.
Do Cmd-Shift-G in the finder and type :
/Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/
Open one of the folders and open each successive folder until you see files like Picnic.mailstationery.
Right-click to show the package content.
Then navigate thru Contents, Resources until you see the files and images you need.
Edit them to your hearts content.
Double-click the file Picnic.mailstationery and it will open in Mail.app for further processing.

I am woking in mainland China, so I have to use VPN to open the page of youtube when I am in China. However, since November 2012, I can't open it again with my MacBook Pro (OSX10.7.5 Lion) through the VPN account. But I can open the page of youtube with my old PowerBook G4 (OSX10.4.11 Tiger) through the same VPN account. Why? Can anyone help me to fix this problem? Thanks

Dear Linc Davis, I can open the other pages except those are blocked by the Chinese government ( youtube, vimeo, etc ). But I don't understand why my PowerBook G4 running with Tiger and Saferi 4.1.3 can open those pages with the same connection and the same VPN account ( as I run both Macbooks side by side since this problem occurred ).
