Can't Write or Copy DVD :(

Hey There,
I'm having issues with Gnomebaker and Brasero. Gnomebaker uses %100 CPU while trying to read the source DVD. And Brasero doesn't even try and eject the discs. But I know that both discs are fine and the source DVD is not encrypted since we created it (on a Mac).
Anybody has problems like this ?

I struggled with copying a mac dvd yesterday  because it wouldn't mount and the gnomebaker and bresero couldn't do it.. the solution was to use the dd command to make a iso of it and then burn it with nautilus cd burner.

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • Can;t write to CD/DVD; Drive not accessible/ incorrect function

    When I try to copy files and select the D drive, the error message says the drive is not accessible,  incorrect function. I have a Satellite P105-S6084.  This is an old laptop still running Windows XP.  I don't burn CDs very often but I need to back up some files before switching to a new computer. I had this problem years ago (when I first acquired it) and someone told me how to fix it by changing a setting.  My recollection from years ago is that I had to find the correct tab and check or uncheck a certain box.  But I've tried hunting all over the control panel, using the help dialogs, etc. and I just can't find anything that looks familiar. After I originally fixed the problem and for years thereafter, whenever I powered on the laptop, I received a window asking me if I wanted to enable (or maybe disable) a certain function...sorry, I just can't remember the exact details...and I always answered a certain way.  My sister used my laptop awhile back and I think she may have answered the question the other (i.e., wrong) way and essentially "undid" whatever the original fix was (because I no longer get that message).   Any ideas would be appreciated.  I had a little problem today and although my laptop seems fine right now, I feel like I'm on borrowed time and really need to back up some files.

    Try Microsoft's fix here.
    Also, it's likely your drive has failed. the optical drive is the most likely mechanical component to fail.

    There is no proper substitute for iDVD.
    Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
    But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
    Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
    “when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
    I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
    In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
    In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
    “You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
    “It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
    I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
    The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
    Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Satellite A210 - can't write DVD-DL - need firmware for LG GSA-T20N

    I have problem with my DVD drive... I can't write DVD-DL discs (DVD+DL too).
    I'm looking for a firmware for my drive.
    On Toshiba Support I can find only firmware for Pioneer and Toshiba (TSSTCorp) drives.
    Lg says that Toshiba should have newest firmware.

    Hi
    I checked the Toshiba European driver page and found tree different firmware updates for TS-L632H, TS-L632 and TS-L632P but there is no update for LG GSA-T20N.
    If you are not able to burn the data on some double layer disks then you should try different brands.
    As far as I know your user manual should contains some details and information about the supported and compatible disks.
    Check it!

  • I can't burn CD or DVD.  I get a "medium write error."  I bought an external CD drive, and get the same message.

    I can't burn CDs or DVDs.  I get a "medium write error."  Bought a new external CD drive, and get the same message.

    What are you trying to achieve?  Are you trying to burn to disk via the iPhoto Share ➙ Burn menu? That produces a mini library on the disk that can be used only by a Mac running iPhoto.
    If you want to burn just some image files to a data CD/DVD disk then follow Larry's recommended workflow.
    What disk type and manufacturer are your using? What system and iPhoto version are you running?  Have you run the OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test? When did the burning proiblem begin?  If you can't burn a disk from the Finder then it's a hardware or system problem and not an iPhoto one.

  • I can not export photos onto DVD. After I click export, close iPhoto, click Finder, At this point I can't find the file to burn. (copy to be used on Windows) Sorry for the lame question....new to mac

    I can not export photos onto DVD. After I click export, close iPhoto, click Finder, At this point I can't find the file to burn. (copy to be used on Windows) Sorry for the lame question....new to mac

    So it sounds like you are trying to burn a DVD with photos on it so the photos can be either transferred to or displayed on a Windows PC, is that correct?
    For the purposes of this I am going to assume you are using iPhoto '11.
    Gather the photos you want to burn to DVD in one album in iPhoto. This is not absolutely necessary but it sure makes things easier for me.
    Select that album, then go to the File menu and select Export...
    In the dialog that shows up, select the File Export tab. Select the setting you want to use for export. Click the Export button.
    Another dialog will show up. Set the location to Desktop and click the New Folder button. Name the folder something nice and descriptive and click the Create button.
    Click the OK button. Quit iPhoto as the rest of this work will be done in the Finder.
    You will now have a folder on your desktop with that nice descriptive name. Find it and select it. Go to the File menu and from it select Burn "Descriptive folder name" to Disc...
    Insert a blank DVD when prompted.
    Let the finder complete the work and eject the disc afterwards.
    That's it. Best of luck.

    You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

  • How can I write dual DVDs with my UJ 820S DVD burner?

    hello i own a satellite notebook, and my problem is that it cannot write at dual dvds, i believe that i have to upgrade the firmware but i cant find anything, recently i had the same problem with my desktop pc and solve it when i upgrade the firmware from its own nec dvd burner, anybody knows where i can find a firmware update, or something else to solve my problem?

    Hi Chris
    The CD and DVD burning and reading with different drives is a never ending story.
    I use an external burner and believe me; I have tested more than 10 different medias from different manufactures.
    I could burn some medias but not read and read but not burn :(
    I think you should also test different DVDs.
    In my user manual I have found a list with compatible CD and DVD. Possibly you will also find the same supported media list in you preinstalled user manual.

  • Can't copy dvd's

    I want to copy dvds, mostly my own which includes dvd copies of VHS movies I wrote as well as home dvds. I tested DVD-Cloner based on reviews but it seems to only copy dvds it wants to and others it won't. There's no pattern and their support said "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't." Any suggestions appreciated...why won't it work on my 2011 iMac? And what does?

  • Write Kestone to DVD

    OK, here's the problem. I produced my first 40 minute long presentation of still pictures, mixed with six short movie clips. There is a soundtrack running in sync with the pictures, going to mute when the movies run. I finished the presentation and copied the entire show to DVD, but it won't play on a DVD player for TV. So, I asked the local Apple store for advice and they said Export it to QuickTime and then to iDVD. So, I tried that but everytime it got to the movie clip, it Quit. So, I tried changing the slide and transition time. This time, it took ages to start converting and when it got to the movie it copied the entire movie and not just the clip.
    SO I have a dilemma, I'm needing to write a DVD of the program so I can play on any computer - even if it doesn't have KeyStone. Also, I want to write a version to DVD to play on TV. Also, I want to play this in England which requires a Region 2 DVD write.
    Can anyone help me through this mire? I'm leaving for England tomorrow and need to get the DVD transferred tonight.
    HELP!!!

    OK.
    I tried that but everytime it got to the movie clip, it Quit.
    Do you mean Keynote quits or iDVD quits?
    I want to play this in England which requires a Region 2 DVD write.
    Burned DVDs are regionless, so a DVD you burn with iDVD or any other tool should play on any player that can handle a burned DVD, regardless of region. You will, though (unless I'm badly mistaken) have to create the DVD as a PAL project, not NTSC, to play in the UK.
