Can;t write to CD/DVD; Drive not accessible/ incorrect function

When I try to copy files and select the D drive, the error message says the drive is not accessible,  incorrect function. I have a Satellite P105-S6084.  This is an old laptop still running Windows XP.  I don't burn CDs very often but I need to back up some files before switching to a new computer. I had this problem years ago (when I first acquired it) and someone told me how to fix it by changing a setting.  My recollection from years ago is that I had to find the correct tab and check or uncheck a certain box.  But I've tried hunting all over the control panel, using the help dialogs, etc. and I just can't find anything that looks familiar. After I originally fixed the problem and for years thereafter, whenever I powered on the laptop, I received a window asking me if I wanted to enable (or maybe disable) a certain function...sorry, I just can't remember the exact details...and I always answered a certain way.  My sister used my laptop awhile back and I think she may have answered the question the other (i.e., wrong) way and essentially "undid" whatever the original fix was (because I no longer get that message).   Any ideas would be appreciated.  I had a little problem today and although my laptop seems fine right now, I feel like I'm on borrowed time and really need to back up some files.

Try Microsoft's fix here.
Also, it's likely your drive has failed. the optical drive is the most likely mechanical component to fail.

  • DVD drive not accessible

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 5 w/Quicktime, my DVD drive is not accessible. When I go to My Computer, clicking on the DVD drive gives an error message "E: is not accessible. Incorrect Function".
I know it is related to Quicktime, because when I uninstalled it, everything was fine (but then of course I can't use iTunes). I also tried using Quicktime Alternative, which seemed to help at first, but now I have the same problem again.
Any suggestions? If I do a system restore back to before the upgrade, all is well, but then I have no iTunes library.
    Thanks!

    :-(
I reinstalled Roxio (version 8) and no changes.
Also uninstalled it and ... no changes
The thing is that the symptons are different from the MS issue report: if there is a CD I can access the CD, view it, copy it, etc... what Icant do is drag and drop.
Seems really a motherboard related problem, because it was not there befoe: does it have to do with Jmicron?
    thanks

  • DVD drive not writing - Satellite M40X-175

im having a problem w/ my dvd. i tried to burn my movies, music and my files into a dvdr or cdr, i even tried dvdrw and cdrw but everytime i do it gives an error "d:\ is not accessible incorrect function". but when i try to watch a dvd movie or play my music cd, it does work. it reads. does this mean that my dvd drive can only read and not write?
[Edited by: admin on 04-Feb-06 20:23]

    Hi there,
I think Satellite M40X is new enough to have CD writing feature. Seems to me a HW issue but you can try:
1- clean the empty CD with a dry cloth
2- blow to the lens and be sure there is no dust
3- you can uninstall its driver from
    control panel-> system -> hardware -> device manager -> DVD-RAM -> (right click) properties -> driver -> Uninstall -> restart your laptop.
If they do not help you can contact an Authorised Service Partner of Toshiba. You can find the nearest one from http://217.45.123.236/toshiba/resellerselector.nsf/WebServiceProv?OpenForm

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • DVD Drive not being able to boot off of. Not seen in Boot Menu options in Bios.

    HI Guys,
I am having a serious problem here and Lenovo Support has been bouncing me around between Hardware and Software Support.. They are extremely uneducated and I miss Dell Support.  They are not educated about their own product and it saddens me. Here is my problem and there should be a simple soulution. Please help.
    1) I have a IdeaPad U 430 Touch laptop. It came pre installed with Windows 8 Home. Unfortunately Windows 8 Home did not work with any of my Business Applications..
    2) I completey wiped my Hard Drive using Government Software to write 1 and 0's..  I installed Winows 7 Ultimate successfully by booting off of my External USB DVD Drive.
    3) After sucessfully installing WIndows 7 Ultimate I upgraded my Bios to the latest version.
    4) I am able to see my DVD Drive in WIndows 7 at the Operating System Level.
    5) This is the problem I can see the External USB DVD DRIVE in Windows 7 Operating System Level.  Its in Windows Explorer..  However I am unable to Boot off the DVD Drive. When I reboot the latop and press F12 the External USB DVD Drive is not listed there.  This is the Same External USB DVD Drive I used to wipe the Hard Drive Clean and install Windows 7 successfully.. My Bios is set to Legacy..
    6) Please Help.. Someone

    hi Agent0
    Thanks for Posting!
Upgrading the BIOS might set off something.
Check under Exit TAB and see if you have OS optimized or OS optimal Settings.
Change it to other OS or Disable.
          Save and Exit
    Boot into BIOS again.
Check Boot Tab if you have now a Boot mode and Boot Priority.
Set those to Legacy / Legacy first.
Look for Secureboot and disable it.
Save and Exit and try the F12 and see if you can have the ODD drive as an option again.
    Regards

  • I can read but I can't write to an external drive - changing permissions

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
    It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.

Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
    No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.
    What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

  • Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
    Thanks

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr
    MD5(/Users/MyName/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr)= 977f4f0f1400be91855789213e07b031
    Windows FCIV example
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    Usage:  fciv.exe [Commands] <Options>
    Commands: ( Default -add )
-add    <file | dir> : Compute hash and send to output (default screen).
                    dir options:
                    -r       : recursive.
                    -type    : ex: -type *.exe.
-exc file: list of directories that should not be computed.
-wp      : Without full path name. ( Default store full path)
-bp      : specify base path to remove from full path name
-list            : List entries in the database.
            -v               : Verify hashes.
                             : Option: -bp basepath.
            -? -h -help      : Extended Help.
    Options:
            -md5 | -sha1 | -both    : Specify hashtype, default md5.
-xml db                 : Specify database format and name.
To display the MD5 hash of a file, type fciv.exe filename
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv -add Windows8.1-64bit.cdr

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and CD/DVD not working correctly.  I would perform a hardware test.  Where did the CD come from? Were you having issues with the CD ROM before?  I would be happy to assist if needed as there are many models of HP Notebook,  I would need the model number. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
